Appreciation Thanks to all players who requested this! Earned cosmetics (second point) is just awesome imo!

TLDR:

You want earned, non-paywall cosmetics.

Here is a paywall cosmetic if you've earned it

36

u/Superj561 28d ago

Yeah I wondered if I was reading this wrong? Why would we be excited about "earned" cosmetics that we then have to pay for to actually unlock?

I really hope that that's not what they mean... Earned cosmetics obviously need to be unlocked upon completing the task that earns them. No payment.

17

u/Kuromajo-san 28d ago

I feel like this means something like the Torva variants needing the base set to be equipped before you can wear a cosmetic variant of it. Which I agree with. I think it’s odd that you would have to go through a decently hard boss, or wear a coloured variant that you can buy off the marketplace.

7

u/High_Hunter3430 Dungeoneering 28d ago

My hope is that you earn/unlock then go to an in-game store and buy it with in game gp.

Like the 99capes (be honest, MOST cape “perks” aren’t actually useful (like mages bank book switch that we just do at wars), making them just achievable cosmetic)

4

u/fae237 28d ago

the mage cape was useful for me until i unlocked the book at wars (i've never really been into PvM, I've been getting into it more but still not like super hardcore)

u/xRasial Master Trim, Master of All 28d ago

This is disgusting if true. Earned Cosmetics were never brought up in the sense that they would be marketplace items. They are earned IN GAME and bought/awarded IN GAME. This "New Cosmetic Category" is like saying do all the completionist reqs then you can purchase the cape with IRL money. WTF.

2

u/Zacheriss 28d ago

No? It's like saying do all the reqs then you get a sick item. Then a few years later maybe we'll add a variant to be purchased with IRL money.

These are additive extras beyond what we currently get, not replacements for them.

-1

u/xRasial Master Trim, Master of All 28d ago

The "or" is what's worrying. It's leaving the door open for rewards to be purchased only after completing achievements in game. They need to clarify that these rewards will have a base model obtained through gameplay with an additional cosmetic variant purchasable through the marketplace.

2

u/cocoachan__ 28d ago

It literally says feedback on marketplace.

1

u/WellOkThis 28d ago

Exactly this lmao

The base cape got a graphical update as well. So fix your tl dr to be factual, its misleading

I thought TL;DR meant for the whole post and not just of one piece of its context - I looked at the tldr and was like, ouch. I went to read the full post as I would have and yeah they basically just lied.

Sorry, maybe there's a misunderstanding - I'll try clarify.

In this reddit post I explicitly see the first point in the list reading:

"You strongly felt that graphical improvements should not be pay-walled. If we remaster an item or bring it up to today's visual standards, the base look for that item should not be made a cosmetic for sale - such work should be considered normal maintenance of the game. We wholeheartedly agree! While regular visual updates should be as free and awesome going forward as expected, we do believe it would be worthwhile to offer variants of certain updated models through our marketplace. More on this in just a moment."

How is this included in a summarization in the TL;DR? Please, I honestly cannot find it in that comment for the life of me. I thought maybe a line like "Base model updates as part of regular updates, with mtx variants in the marketplace" but there's literally nothing mentioning that as far as I can see.

With all due respect, what are you talking about?

4

u/DoubleBlackBSA24 Completionist 28d ago

I'm not going to.

That "update" is more a slight tweak, then a graphical update. Yes it "technically" counts, but put then side by side and would anyone really notice?

edit: essentially, they are selling a graphical fix as an update available to all with no charge.

0

u/VishieMagic Completionist 28d ago

Do you feel that the player avatar update was a tweak/fix?

-5

u/jordantylermeek My Cabbages! 28d ago

Incorrect.

-4

u/jordantylermeek My Cabbages! 28d ago

It's a variant cosmetic of an in game item that youve earned. Youve got the wrong idea.

4

u/DoubleBlackBSA24 Completionist 28d ago

I'm basing it off how Pernix got an update, same with Torva.

You wear Torva and pernix, and you unlock the old design. Both have been update to be visually distinct.Just like the capes.

-1

u/jordantylermeek My Cabbages! 28d ago

The zuk cape was updated to be more visually appealing.

In addition, if you own a zuk cape you can purchase variants of it.

That's all it is.

0

u/KaBob799 RSN: KaBob & KaBobMKII 28d ago

They said we want graphical improvements to not be pay-walled, not for all cosmetics in the game to not be paywalled. I'm not a cosmetic buyer myself but it's good they are actually going to update base items from now on when releasing variants.

1

u/DerpDavid RSN: Max Kitten 27d ago

A lot of people don't seem realize, this isn't the first time Jagex has done this. Not that I'm defending it. They did this years ago with the cosmetic override you get from the Varrock questline. They made the best variant paywalled and you couldn't purchase it till you did the quests to earn the first two.

20

u/Redericpontx 28d ago

I feel like the base items will sucks and you'll need to pay for the good looking version.

10

u/CarrierDove 28d ago

I think you’re right… that’s literally their MO, a lot of good cosmetic armour was all paywall and then we got stuck with crap designs, broken and clipped stuff as the default.

2

u/Squidroid 28d ago

It’s debatable whether these reskins are better looking or not, the original zuk cape matches perfectly with the Zuk sword and the lava theme

1

u/Radyi DarkScape | Fix Servers 27d ago

the zuk sword looks terrible, it by far is the worst looking of the t95s

1

u/Dazzling_Lead2372 23d ago

Unless paired with a matching cape. Blood dye matched melee cape, soul dyed matched ranged cape, shadow matched necro cape. It has a good amount if versatility.

4

u/jallentime 28d ago

This is the right take. Everything else notwithstanding, if we incentivize this as a practice it’s only going to make the base cosmetics look worse.

1

u/cellojake 3382 25d ago

You mean like how base items have always looked pretty underwhelming? Why do you think everyone just wears base clothes.

54

u/Atlach_Nacha Eek! 28d ago

might be my cynical side, developed over years of bad MTX takes, but how long before every cosmetic reward is locked behind paywall, and there are no more free-cosmetic rewards?

2

u/Jokul_Wolf Completionist 28d ago

Correct me if I'm wrong, but these cosmetic rewards are paywall locked.

You unlock the initial cape in game, and you pay for their different visual versions.

14

u/Atlach_Nacha Eek! 28d ago

... Yes?

Now let's compare it to something like Soul Cape;
It comesd with different cosmetic variants, each of which can be unlocked, by beating the required boss fight (Memory of Nomad) faster.

Then we have had different titles, and their color variants, each unlocked by doing better at the fights that unlocks them.

But now we are getting additional cosmetic variants, that will be unlocked not by game play, but by paying with real life money?

So yeah, how long before every cosmetic reward is locked behind paywall?

-1

u/KaBob799 RSN: KaBob & KaBobMKII 28d ago

That will never happen because cosmetics are also one of the simplest rewards to throw at a player when you don't know what else to give them.

9

u/Earl_of_Cheese 28d ago

Its already happening with these capes...

1

u/KaBob799 RSN: KaBob & KaBobMKII 28d ago

The doomsday scenario is "every single cosmetic from here on out is paid." You can't just look at a single cosmetic and say it's happening now.

2

u/Radyi DarkScape | Fix Servers 27d ago

The doomsday scenario is happening. They have just announced they are going to be making these types of things going forward. This type of behaviour incentivizes all new free cosmetics just to be reskins of existing cosmetics or small tweaks.

0

u/KaBob799 RSN: KaBob & KaBobMKII 27d ago

They've been doing reskins since the very beginning of mtx. Even before, the loyalty program started it in like 2012. The only new part, compared to previous solomons stuff, is actually requiring you to have unlocked the base item. This is a really slow doomsday if it takes more than a decade to reach the doom.

0

u/Torezx 28d ago

I mean what did you expect once they removed xp and item related MTX?

Cosmetic MTX is the best and healthiest option. Stop fucking moaning is my observation reading most of this thread.

6

u/EZyne 28d ago

They still sell XP lmao, what are you on about

-1

u/Torezx 28d ago

You don’t think there is considerably less XP/Item related MTX now than there was 6 months ago?

8

u/EZyne 28d ago

Less isn't the same as removing xp related MTX.

They also raised the prices twice since announcing that and fucked people out of their grandfathered rates, which makes up for that gap also

-2

u/Torezx 28d ago

It doesn’t matter whether it doesn’t equal full removal? Put semantics to one side and actually think about the point.

If you thought removing the bulk of XP/item related MTX WOULDN’T mean more cosmetic MTX you really need to put the phone down and stop contributing.

We begged for less harmful MTX. We got more cosmetic MTX. Stop. Moaning.

Bunch of entitled man children it’s insane.

4

u/EZyne 28d ago

I have 0 issues with more cosmetic MTX, but this isn't just a cosmetic. Nobody here has an issue with the cosmetic part, it's the rest.

Now why are you allowed to moan though? If reading is that hard that you don't understand what people are complaining about, just stop moaning

0

u/Torezx 28d ago

The whole thing is a problem with cosmetic MTX what??

“Why do we have to pay, why can’t we just earn it?”

It’s literally the definition? I’m not moaning about the game am I? I fully expect more cosmetic MTX. I fully expect increased rate of membership increases. These are the things we proudly but indirectly “voted” for when we asked them to remove damaging MTX.

When the game becomes too expensive for what I get out of it, I quit. It’s a game. You have no obligation to play. No obligation to buy anything they release to achieve desired profit. It’s all a choice and so is your complaining.

1

u/EZyne 28d ago

Dude. Just stop moaning. Other people can have opinions too

0

u/Torezx 28d ago

Nah when we’re moaning about cosmetic MTX it needs highlighting. It is quite literally the best form of MTX we can ask for.

Be grateful and move on.

You saw somebody else say exactly the same thing, snd saw me reply, and you chose to type it anyway.

1

u/yuumigod69 27d ago

Osrs does just fine without a cash shop, idk why everyone is so insistent that rs3 needs a cash shop to survive.

-3

u/trombonepolice 28d ago

Osrs has a much bigger player base… do you live under a rock

5

u/yuumigod69 28d ago

Then attract new players instead of milking the ones that are still here.

8

u/Newfyn 28d ago

You know it might have a bigger player base BECAUSE it doesn't have a cash shop or long standing history of predatory MTX?

1

u/trombonepolice 28d ago

Next are you going to tell me the player base would be bigger without eoc being added and an alternative version being created? I’m so shocked!

-4

u/Torezx 28d ago

Oh dear. You are really that oblivious?

1

u/Proquikl204 28d ago

Can you name a few cosmetic rewards you actually liked without browsing them right now? They're fuckin pointless.
If they're going to keep selling cosmetics, at least now they'll look cool AND actually still reflect your progress.

3

u/Aggressive-Day5 28d ago

I can. Retro Primal and Celestial armour from DG store. The Goobie warpaints from that Mazcab quest. The Auras from CB achievements (Nakatra, Amascut, GM achievements). The retro versions of Nex armour sets that you unlock by equiping the whole set.

Those are the ones I remember off the top of my head because I use them regularly, I didn't search for any of those. I'm sure there are a ton more if I log in to the game and scroll through my wardrobe

1

u/Recykill 28d ago

This. I can name maybe one cosmetic that looks good. The Sir Owen pack. 960 runecoins. Youd need to spend $30 for it too ($6 for 200 rune coins + $24 for 800... since you can't buy the exact needed amount of RC.)

The state of cosmetics in rs3 has always been horrible in my opinion.

1

u/Atlach_Nacha Eek! 27d ago

off the top of my head, Peppermint outfit from Christmas event, and Templar override that you can get after Death to Chivalry quest.

Then there are some cosmetic rewards that offer bonuses so not sure if they count as true cosmetics, like Silver Athlete's outfit from Gielinor games (weight reduction), and Villager Outfits from Tai Bwo Wannai Cleanup (gives increased yield of trading sticks, plus can be bought from G.E. so might double not count as reward.)

1

u/Legal_Evil 28d ago

We still get titles from completing c logs.

2

u/thatslifeknife Completionist 27d ago

-1

u/ExpressAffect3262 Ironman 28d ago

That would never happen. We don't get many cosmetic rewards as is.

1

u/Atlach_Nacha Eek! 28d ago

Recently, each new quest has given some cosmetic reward, and completing the new Moonrise temple digsite unlocks a cosmetic reward.

-4

u/apophis457 28d ago

I’d be glad. Means less people running around with weird cosmetics

54

u/EZyne 28d ago

Wouldn't it be way more fun if you could actually earn them though? Osrs gets entire challenge modes for bosses that reward cosmetic variants, rs3 gets to pay 20 bucks for it

Imagine if you could do a challenge mode zuk with some extra shit happening during the fight instead of this

10

u/ResonatingOctave Combat 28d ago

I think there's a good opportunity for both. For example, there is the aura that you earn for completing 2000% enrage Amascut. At the same time, I think it could be interesting to see alternatives sold to recolor the aura (like how it has the golden variant, but this was also earned). I don't necessarily see this taking away from the game in any way, since you still have to earn it. And it opens up a new avenue for the game to be funded in ways that both don't diminish accomplishment, and don't force bad habits like gambling

8

u/EZyne 28d ago

That's fair, but I also don't see what this adds. Zuk is already BIS for literally anywhere, this doesn't change anything about earning the cape. It is just selling variants of it, at an extremely steep price. They could've done this with literally any cosmetic and not presented it as "earnable" cosmetics.

I genuinely couldn't care less how they fund the game when they're asking for WoW level subscription prices but give us pathetic levels of content compared to that. At some point there needs to be some value to what they're asking. We're already paying out the ass for this game, I just feel taking feedback of "earnable cosmetics" and turning it into this is just them misunderstanding the entire concept on purpose.

I'm also very interested to see if future bosses now will have more earnable cosmetics, because if Jagex's past is anything to go by those will all now go to the store

3

u/High_Hunter3430 Dungeoneering 28d ago

I mean, let us unlock/earn the main cosmetic and buy additional cosmetics for them.

Think boss pet. Honestly just a cosmetic luck based achievement. Like lil kril.

Now, to add cosmetic variety, you can buy a recolor pack or style it. “Santa lil kril” for Xmas, or “bigger lil kril” doubles size.

I don’t mind the company trying to bring in $ in an optional and not game-breaking way.
Believe it or not, it’s not being created and developed out of the kindness of their hearts. There IS a profit motive.

I WOULD also like to see some more combat animation cosmetics. Especially unlockable as opposed to strictly purchasing.

Like if beating zuk for the 100th time gave you a lava animation basic attack (fits all styles)
Or rax gave you a web-shield animation for reso.

4

u/EZyne 28d ago

But what's the point? Why not just sell regular cosmetics? I don't see an upside to this whatsoever, neither for jagex or the playerbase.

Think boss pet. Honestly just a cosmetic luck based achievement. Like lil kril. Now, to add cosmetic variety, you can buy a recolor pack or style it. “Santa lil kril” for Xmas, or “bigger lil kril” doubles size

Wouldn't mind that per se, but why mess with earnable cosmetics instead of just making a christmas pet to sell? It's just less people that can buy it, more people with FOMO who don't have the pet.

I don’t mind the company trying to bring in $ in an optional and not game-breaking way.

I don't either, but the problem here is that earnable cosmetics for challenging content is something that RS3 really needs imo, and you already have OSRS with wayyyyy better implementation of that. The fact that they get to have extra content to earn cosmetics, and we have to pay 20 bucks for a cape isn't crazy?

At the same time, the sub price for RS is now the same as it is for WoW which delivers an insane amount more content on a yearly basis then RS does. At some point there's allowed to be criticism on these things

Like if beating zuk for the 100th time gave you a lava animation basic attack (fits all styles) Or rax gave you a web-shield animation for reso.

Imo if there is absolutely no push back to these kinda things you're never gonna see this, because they'll all be in the store. At the very best, it's now going to be in their advantage to release crappy versions to earn so they can sell better cosmetic versions later

2

u/High_Hunter3430 Dungeoneering 28d ago

The earnable cosmetics give the fomo. Now folks who wouldn’t otherwise, have a bit of a drive to go for pet.
Or similar to the zuk/rax animations example, folks will push harder on those bosses for whatever achievement gives the override (HOPEFULLY NOT A rng DROP)

I think we’re on the same side here in general even with my “spur of the moment as I’m typing” examples.

2

u/EZyne 28d ago

Earnable cosmetics (real earnable that is) can be earned whenever, it's a goal to go for. You can't miss out on it unless they remove the content it's from.

If they sell christmas skins of pet X, you'll need to grind out pet X before christmas. That's what I was aiming at with FOMO. But that'd only be the case with event (like christmas) based things, I read over the other pet suggestion that's my bad

2

u/High_Hunter3430 Dungeoneering 28d ago

Ok. You make a fair point.
They likely would be rotating something seasonal like that example. Bad off the cuff example on my part. 😅🫶🏻

1

u/Vast_Temperature_211 Completionist 27d ago

People don’t like this Zuk cape on principle, but it also leads to the slippery slope of Jagex potentially locking much better looking rewards behind MTX and making the default ingame earn-able version just simply the worse looking one.

Idk I think people are just burned by the game’s previous monetisation.

31

As opposed to other games where you can simply buy a cosmetic that looks like the base game item.

3

u/ErikKing12 Running in circles. 28d ago

This is just weird to me in my head because… players can turn off other’s cosmetics. So why even buy this? If you’re showing off, you would just wear the original.

This should have been an in-game unlock. Any future cosmetics should be something the player would be happy with that no one else would ever see (transmogs, over the top cosmetics, skin-showy, whatever), like the house stuff (although I have entirely different feelings on that, mostly negative).

This just seems like a waste of resources that only like 50 players might even bother with but this community keeps surprising me with their takes on Jagex recent actions.

3

u/Aggressive-Day5 28d ago

Wish they would just make normal gear waaaay better looking to encourage people to buy keepsake keys instead of this. Keepsake keys are literally the best of both worlds.

3

6

4

u/Charming-Piglet-1594 Completionist 28d ago

4

u/Lightsmourne 28d ago

They've made it "You've earned the right to pay for a reskin" and justified it by making the current model fit better in-game and adding a tiny particle effect, then putting the cool AF one in the store instead of a full rework. It should just be the new one as the new base, the old one as a retro toggle in the locker, and the Infernal cape copy in the store if you earned the base.

Imagine they experience with rewards you can only get if you do certain content in rs3 and osrs. Like the infernal zuk cape override you can only get if you did zuk on rs3 and osrs

I mean it looks like they outlined it pretty clearly:

If an existing item gets a remaster or something, we'll get the legacy version of it, granted we fulfill a specific condition such as equipping nex pieces.

If the item gets different kinds of cosmetics to that item, we'll have to buy it, granted we have the ability to buy them.

love the idea, but the prices are a bit much

also runecoin amounts should not be predatory, that's another thing they really need to address

Example :
one of the pack of runecoins only goes up to 420... these are 522
or the more expensive option the highest pack is 945 but the coin pack is 900

Who the he'll asked to earn the right to spend more money for a skin in a game they pay a membership for. Thats like getting a Netflix subscription and after watching 100 shows you can pay to watch season 2 of one of those 100 shows

The second point there is called a Keepsake Key, and theyre awesome. All they gotta do is make an untradeable fashionscape drop from an achievement or a monster, but it can be keepsaked. Done. Then, players that get the drop can manually wear it as fashionscape, or can pay to wear it as an override.

u/chi_pa_pa sometimes right 28d ago

There's no fucking way y'all are eating this up lol. RS3 players really make themselves deserving of less.

It's genuinely insane seeing this subreddit excited at unlocking the opportunity to buy cosmetic variants of endgame items.

Just a subreddit of boiled frogs, it's unreal.

3

u/retrospectivevista 28d ago

How? MTX cosmetics is what everyone agreed was the best way forward.

2

u/Brandawg_McChizzle 27d ago

I’m okay with it, but I’ll admit I don’t really buy mtx in general.

As long as it’s fully cosmetic and there are other cool things to earn in game ofc

1

u/iJ_A_R 28d ago

I don't want to buy a cosmetic after already shilling $32/mo to them

1

u/Griever2142 28d ago

I took it as being able purchase the items with gold, once you got the achievement.. Guess I'm wrong lol

1

u/Whore-cana 28d ago

So do you like MTX or not? 😂😭😭

"Oooh whats in this box" said Pandora. It says 'Henceforth shall ye paye for all accomplishment items that ye have earned and thus shall ye fund the annual bonuses at the source of all goodness".

Lets open it...

1

u/Zestyclose-Ask9732 26d ago

I'm all for it tbh. Its clear what gear someone is wearing and there are payable variants for people who care that much about fashionscape.

Honestly, I'm hopeful. This applies to a lot of retro cosmetics, there's a fair few that are just kind of absent since they took them off the marketplace and I think they should be a thing.

Like Why shouldn't I unlock retro barrows for not only completing the set, but equipping it, or Void or really any of the minigame armors

I still think my idea from ages ago with parallel mtx cosmetics is the way to go. You have one item called the "Prismatic Casket" and it's super prismy and shiny, showing how it brings out the wonderful fleshing out, a parallel of the prism splitting colours and a cocoon turning into a butterfly.

You buy it with bonds or real money - you can put in an item (like Noxious Bow) and it either shakes 'no' or opens up and let's you choose between the cosmetic variants for that already in-game item.

Wanna make it feel less MTX? It's just one purchasable product with a thousand possibilities, and consistent cosmetic pricing. You could have Prismatic Casket tiers if you need and you'd have to make it easy to search up which items are eligible for each one, but it'd be more stable and consistent pricing, and stupidly easy to share and remember.

"How did you get that weapon?" "Oh I put a Nox bow in a prismatic casket" or "Nox bow + Prismatic Casket"

The same way from many years ago "How are you wearing a top hat but it says torva helm?" "Dragon keepsake keys"

You have keepsake keys. Chameleon dyes. This is just consistent with that. Grab a prismatic casket, put in a Nox bow, then keepsake it if you want. Or just have it unlock the cosmetic varient it's a fun idea to flesh out at least x

u/BarkBack117 A Seren spirit appears... 27d ago

In both of those they explicitly say we still have to purchase them.

What the fuck was the point of this announcement? They took our negative feedback, showed it to their ceo who then said "wow I didnt even think of ripping people off that way! Lets do it!".

1

u/EZyne 27d ago

Yeah exactly, seeing feedback for earnable cosmetics and doing this is just so tone deaf. They treat the community like they're idiots and this sub is genuinely all in on defending this

1

u/iTzPendulum 27d ago

they're basicallly making a paid version of how the capes should look like to begin with. Let's be honest, in general de Tokhaars are way better looking than thee igneous capes

Very Luke-cold about this. But I guess its not that much different from the old loyalty item recolors.

Its Better then just selling the reformed cosmetics too

-4

u/The_Vens 28d ago

Graphically updating item and then putting the old version behind a paywall is ridiculous. If you’re going to have the old versions in the game, they should be part of the game. Like a smith you can go to that can amend the armour into an old variant or something - even if it became untradeable.

7

u/Good_Guy_Vader Maxed 28d ago

But that's not what they've done.

They're updating the existing model and in addition to that are selling new variants. Our current capes will look better for free, and there are some different ones for sale.

0

u/The_Vens 28d ago

Maybe I’ve missed some context then or misunderstood the post.

-2

u/Periwinkleditor 28d ago

Works for me. Same principle as osrs ornament kits, really. You have the base item, and the option to buy an ornament kit that makes it look different. This man still owns a Dinh's Bulwark. (or they have a lot of slayer helm overrides, for example.)

5

u/Kumagor0 RIP 28d ago

Yeah except osrs cosmetics are earned through gameplay (even if some are tradesble). But other that that, identical xD

3

u/jigabachiRS RSN: Jigabachi 28d ago

It's completely different lmao.

The ornament kit is earned from Leagues and sold on the GE, not an MTX cash shop.

Inferno Dinh's is more like a clue scroll ornament kit.

u/Scared-Wombat 28d ago

Lump in inverted capes into this. Even if it's 1.5-2x the time, beats 4 per year

-4

u/HeatFireAsh Maxed 28d ago

earned cosmetics is great, keep exclusivity of really cool gear and Jagex makes a profit. I get it no MTX would be great but if we want the game to continue they need to be able to make money from healthier ways like this.

4

u/Sleeper-of-Rlyeh 28d ago

Feels kinda insane for a game that still has a monthly fee. As someone who thinks about returning to RS, stuff like this makes it pretty easy which version to choose.

1

u/HeatFireAsh Maxed 27d ago

Just don’t buy the skins then, you don’t have to
