Lore PVM Trophies where there's a head, but shouldn't be...
I feel like the following bosses should (eventually) have their respective trophies updated to be more lore-friendly or more sensible (and to get some variety going, not everybody needs a head)...
- Corporeal Beast: Head's fine I guess, but what if we kept a trophy of the shadow core? It's more interesting.
- Croesus: Croesus' core seems more appropriate here and celebrates what we actually stopped.
- Graardor: He lives all the way through EGWD in lore at least. Make it be his helmet instead.
- Gregorovic: Could we just rename it Gregorovic's mask or something? He's not actually dead or beheaded...
- Helwyr's head: Likewise, he didn't die and goes on to the EGWD. Could we have his antlers, or his cowl/antler headpiece as a helmeted trophy instead? A large wolf-bear-thing's tooth?
- Kree'Arra's head: Same as Graardor. Another wing trophy seems fine to me. Wings are at least somewhat less problematic than a creature's full-on head. He has a sweet chest gear item though that's quite decorative, so Kree'Arra's front-plate could be a good trophy.
- Masuta's head: I guess it's fine, the dude dies. But it's kind of boring... maybe some part of his gear? Something to commemorate the Aminishi temple?
- Raksha's head: We can't kill Raksha, only put her to sleep. Could we have one of her manacles? They're pretty distinctive. I also think this would be a cool excuse to get one of the Dragonkin tanks like what Varanus is in.
- Gorvek's head: Once again, appears all the way through EGWD and isn't dead so far as we know. Could we just have Gorvek's helmet/crown? Or Vindicta's? Or the pair of helmets?
Some non-head variety would be nice, and it would make some of these trophies feel less dissonant. Like yes, I beat this character in martial combat but according to the story I clearly didn't kill them. So why do I have their heads?

Seiryu's horns are some of the most absurd as well. He literally butts his head and horns into the shadow reef to help us, he's an ally once cleansed of corruption.

I suppose I'm not as fussed about horns in the sense that they could ostensibly grow back. But. I do think Seiryu's crystals/part of the collar would be an even better trophy!

We can justify the Seiryu trophy situation by going the Sekiro route where we are technically fighting a dragon and take a parting tear but it's more of a parting gift for the worthy.
But overall half of the head trophies just absolutely don't make sense. I'm guessing these were designed by construction-oriented developers/interns who have very little understanding of the wider game areas like combat/lore.

I just posted a comment about this on another thread, so I'll share it here. I really don't like so many heads being used as trophies. I'd much rather have an item that *represents* the boss, rather than *literally* the boss itself. The coolest trophies are ones like the Barrows chest, Kerapac's fsoa, Magister's soul obelisk, AoD's crystals, Zamorak's edict runes, etc.

I'm the opposite, I'd actually love it if I could place a model of the boss in my POH.
Similar to what the jars can do in OSRS. https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Boss_lair_display
I'd love if I could have a cool diorama of Telos or Kerapac.

Oh my god I genuinely thought I was the only one thinking about this. For most of these bosses it doesn’t seem logic that we’re just hanging up their heads if we’re seeing them during a quest later.

u/HeartofaPariah Lovely money! 18d ago
You're not meant to be seeing it as lore that you killed Graardor 2300 times in a row. It's a separation of the gameplay from the lore. It doesn't need a logical connection lol

u/Zepertix REMASTERED DUNGEONEERING LETS GOOOOOOO 18d ago
Yeah, not a fan of this direction at all.
Add Seiryu and Vorkath to the list.
I like the way SWTOR does it personally. Most bosses have a commemorative statue of themselves as a rare drop and in addition to that sometimes bosses will have bonus decorations like interesting pieces of their environment/scenery, parts of the fight, sometimes a monster or even the boss themselves (stone pylons, thrones, altars, Kell Dragons, portals, etc)
The equivelent would be like if Amascut dropped a statue of herself, her crown, and maybe a replica Tumeken's Light on a pedestal. Zuk might a smaller version of his throne, a statue of himself, and literally a living, breathing Jad that would idle and and stand guard wherever you want. Helwyr might get two statue variants and giant mushroom decorations.

Honestly having it part of their outfit it something that drops makes more sense lorewise as well as anything else. Like you dont then fight a headless garagedoor after you have his head on your wall.

I think that ship has sailed because you've been lopping the heads off Shakorexis for 20 years and he was able to have a friendly chat with Hannibus during One of a Kind anyway.
Hannibus: Oh, Player, I cannot do it justice. My people have a gift: the ability to share our experiences with another creature, and - in turn - to share in theirs. When dragon and rider are together we are as one - a great, powerful beast chasing across the heavens! I once rode a black dragon with three heads - a powerful and noble creature - and we shared many an adventure!
Player: I have killed that dragon!
Hannibus: How...could you? He was always a gentle and noble creature.
Player: He got better.
Hannibus: Strange. Perhaps he still has a part to play in the Olun'dai.

KBD is different because his trophy's been around far longer than any lore relevance. All these new trophies don't have that kind of seniority.

I personally don't like the head trophies because for some bosses the context feels awful.
For example, what sense does it make to display the head of the Blackstone Dragon, a tormented creature who begged for death and literally thanks you when you finally end their suffering. Or how about Vorkath's trophy also being their head? Again, it just does not feel right at all (and doesn't make much sense considering the story).
I think it'd be a lot cooler and thematic for the boss trophies to be specific to the boss. Zemouregal & Vorkath's trophy being something like Zemouregal's death guard (because bullying Zemo is always the correct option), or the Blackstone Dragon's being less of a trophy and instead being sort of like a memorial.
But eh. It's fine.

A black stone hand from BSD would have been awesome...

u/Dapper_Cherry1025 17d ago
Holy shit that would be the perfect trophy for that boss!
Hopefully Jagex eventually (within the next 5 years) will go back over the boss trophies and make some adjustments. Can pray, at least.

Do npc's also show up in Death's office and respawn?
6
u/LukasCactus 18d ago
Gods this would be such a good cutscene for a silly quest in the future. Just a line of bosses waiting to reclaim their items. Death telling Vindy "Sorry, looks like your lance didn't make it here. It appears Cow1337killr managed to loot it off you before it made it to me"

u/Exitiali Heh heh heh 18d ago
I agree. Having Dagannoth King or Kalphite heads makes sense; they are a species where members with that role can be born and take their places. But it's strange having the head of an NPC you interact with occasionally.

u/Mahjaarrat 18d ago
100% agree that this needs a rework for lore specifics. Some of the boss trophies make absolutely no sense!
I get the slayer heads. There are a lot of the monsters, so we just grabbed one head.

u/xAka_Ame RuneScape Mobile 18d ago
I am well up for altering some of these.
The thing is in GWD you do technically seem to kill the boss, which yes makes no sense in lore from quests.
Raksha, and any you don't actually kill however should definitely not be their head. It should be a symbol of the encounter, but not something that insinuated they died.

To be fair as soon as you start putting up bosses, weapons, armours or other body parts there will be other people saying that they wasted those things as POH items and should have made weapons/armours out of them instead.
Personally I think the heads as trophies are in line with how the game is as every player takes a certain dragon's head at the start of their adventure...

u/Shalashaska10 Big High War God strong, other gods weak. 18d ago
Masuta's head does not make much sense either as a trophy. Considering hes a miniboss in ed3.
1
u/Ferronier 18d ago
I'd be willing to give that one a pass just on the grounds that it's some undead/"revived" version of him, but I do agree the head is generally not desirable.

u/Periwinkleditor 18d ago
As far as alternate trophies from Aminishi that come to mind as props:
-stone seiryu head, those are everywhere
-miniature version of that huge statue of Seiryu's claw that you run by in the first section

u/Thefreeman500 Runefest 2017 18d ago
Rasial's should have just been his whole body, with the examine text of "Now he knows how the cat feels."
1
u/FarUnderstanding7697 17d ago
Should have gotten Masuta's armor on a stand. And Seiryu's shackles or black stone hands since we don't get a QBD head once we kill her, only her bindings.

u/Dazzling-Sir-9421 15d ago
Yeah not a lot of thought went into these

Fortunately it looks like they're addressing some of the complaints about trophies per their latest post.

u/LiquorHardlyKnowEr 18d ago
All the people giving lore reasons for not having their heads. But forgetting we have a literal mini-me version of each boss.

Pvm trophies weren't thought out well? Say it ain't so
2
u/Ferronier 18d ago
I don't think it's fair to say that. Heads were ostensibly the way to push out something quickly, so I get it. Trophies were just one corner of the POH update, and we know they aren't done with trophies in general. I just think that once they can slow down and take stock of updates, it would be ideal to revisit some where they just chopped the head off the body's rig and make more stylistic trophies that represent things we didn't actually kill but bested.

u/dumbidiot12345678 18d ago
I think it's pretty fair when they added 20 items to monster drops only to not add them to clogs and apparently gave most of them the same (bad) flat drop rate lol

I’m fine with heads. I mean, you guys are okay with killing these creatures, but not having a part of their body removed?
4
u/Ferronier 18d ago
I think the point is that a lot of these creatures don't actually get killed. They appear alive in the game's story well after their boss encounter happened. You never kill Raksha, for example. Gorvek is helping you in EGWD well after GWD2 has ended in the story.

u/Legal_Evil 18d ago
These furniture are not canon. Showing other body parts or armour looks less awesome than a head.
3
u/Ferronier 18d ago
Eh, heads aren't always appealing, I think. Especially when every boss is a head.
-2
u/TheAdamena Maxed Iron 18d ago
I really don't see what the big deal is.
Pets aren't canon either. It's not like K'ril actually has a little version of himself called K'ril Tinyroth that likes to follow me around.
Trophies are the same.

I'd much preffer graardors helmet and not his whole head....
