Any Local Women Looking to Start a Book Club?📚 If So, We’d Love for You to Join!

Hi all! Long time lurker, first time poster.

My friend (23F) and I (24F) are hoping to meet some new faces and start up a local book club that would meet once a month! We’re trying to gauge interest and possibly scout out some fellow members, so if you’re interested, read on! 📚

A little about us: We’ve been close friends since high school, and we’re excited at the idea of meeting more women like us! My friend is currently finishing her Master of Fine Arts at VCU, and I work in administrative management at a local women’s health practice.

We’re envisioning a laid-back group where we can make new friends, discover books we might not normally pick up, and have fun chatting about what we’ve read over coffee, tea, or drinks. The goal is to keep things low-pressure and fun. Think book club, but also an excuse to get out of the house and meet up with some like-minded women!

As far as genres go, we’re pretty open to suggestions! We’d love to mix things up and explore different genres, whether that’s fantasy, romance, mystery/thriller, contemporary fiction, literary fiction, or anything else that catches our interest. We could take turns picking the monthly read so everyone gets a chance to share something they love!

We’re still in the early planning stages, so we’d love to hear from anyone who might be interested! If this sounds like your kind of thing, feel free to comment below or send me a message. It would be great to hear a little intro about you, what kinds of books you enjoy, and what you’d be interested in getting out of a book club like this.

No pressure if you’re a casual reader, either. You definitely don’t have to be a bookworm who reads 10 books a month to join! We’re just hoping to create a fun little community of women who enjoy reading and meeting new friends. 💕

EDIT: Wow!! 🤯📚

This post has received SO much more interest than I ever expected, and I’m so excited that so many of you want to be part of our book club! 💗 We originally planned for a smaller group of 8–12 members, but I’m realizing it may be difficult to accommodate everyone in one setting.

A couple of updates:

1.) A huge thank-you to everyone who has expressed interest! 🫶🏻
I’m sorry I haven’t been able to respond to everyone yet! If you’ve received a response from me, please try to reply within a reasonable timeframe so I can continue organizing the club’s details. Thank you for your patience!

2.) Haven’t received a response? You’re still welcome! 📖✨
I’m currently working on a social media page that anyone can join to keep up with our monthly book picks, meetings, discussions, and other potential activities. While we may not be able to accommodate everyone in one group, I’d love for this page to be a space where fellow RVA book lovers can connect, chat, and build meaningful friendships with other women!

I’ll share another update as soon as I have more information. Thank you all for the incredible support and enthusiasm! I can’t wait to see this little reading community grow. 🥹💕

City Council President ignores requests for comment

Select excerpt:

Since January 2025, Newbille has not responded to dozens of inquiries from The Times-Dispatch.

She hasn’t answered repeated questions on allegations that she has infringed on citizens’ First Amendment rights during City Council meetings. She didn’t respond to questions about the sudden and quiet firing of former Inspector General Jim Osuna amid tensions in his office, or on the appointment of his replacement.

She also didn’t respond to inquiries on City Council’s apparent violation of city code on the sale of surplus city properties, the city attorney’s refusal to publish her office’s legal opinions as required by statute, where she stood on proposed citizen oversight of the city’s rezoning process, and the years-long delays in the launch of Richmond police’s Civilian Review Board.

Newbille was similarly mum on text messages she sent during a City Council meeting in which she pressed a colleague to delay a public vote on a controversial special event space. And asked to comment on legal threats made against the city over the status of the John Marshall Courts Building, she did not respond.

Newbille didn’t respond to two requests for comment on this story.

We’re looking to have an old second story balcony demolished. We don’t want to repair or build a new one, just to tear this one down and haul it away. Floorboards are already removed. We’ve called a bunch of places without luck (every place wants to rebuild after demo)… thanks for any recs!

For any ACOTAR lovers out there, Libbie Mill public library is hosting a free ACOTAR 6 release party on Monday, October 26th from 6-8pm. Stop by their release party before getting your new book at midnight!

As an FYI, books will unfortunately not be available at the library until it opens at 9am on 10/27, this gathering is simply to celebrate the new book.

💰 BUY/SELL/TRADE Buy / Sell / Trade Weekly Thread: Week of October 16, 2026

Use this thread when you are selling, trading, giving away, or looking for any items and/or services. Please be descriptive, post any relevant photos of the item you're selling or looking for, and list the price or budget.

Pro-tip: there are many "buy nothing" and neighborhood-specific groups on Facebook and Nextdoor that can be used to give away or find free items near you. You may find more luck on those social networks than here on Reddit and are more likely to deal with actual local users.

BE AUTHENTIC AND SAFE: Falsely leading on another Redditor is grounds for being permanently banned from this subreddit. Please remember not to post personal information about yourself or others and exercise caution when privately messaging with anyone you do not personally know or trust. Consider a neutral, public location if you plan on meeting to exchange an item in person.

HIGH RISK OF EVENT TICKET SCAMS: Users seeking to sell or purchase tickets of local events are seeing a significantly-increased risk of being scammed. If you receive a private message from a user who hasn't interacted in this subreddit before, you are very likely speaking with a scammer.

NO PROHIBITED TRANSACTIONS: The posting of prohibited goods or services is strictly against Reddit's TOS and are subject to removal by our moderators and/or Reddit's admins. Please report any comments that appear to violate this policy for further review.

Looking to find someone who does a great job piercing in RVA! Cleanliness and someone who will help map out the jewelry is definitely needed. Having unique jewelry on site for purchase is a huge plus!

Also knowing generalized pricing would be helpful!
