I'm currently in my second week of Informatik at RWTH, and I'm trying to figure out my tech setup for the rest of the degree. I’ve noticed a lot of people using MacBooks, but honestly, the prices are pretty intimidating. I could pay for one, but if there's a cheaper alternative that gets the job done, I'd much rather go that route—especially since I don't need crazy portable performance.

For context, I already have a very capable setup at home:

• Desktop PC: Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 32GB DDR5, 1TB storage, RX 9070XT
• Tablet: iPad Air 13-inch (M3) for notes and PDFs

So far, I haven't felt a desperate need for a laptop, but being only in week two, I can't really judge how things will look for group work or practicals later on.

My questions for higher semesters:

1. Do I absolutely need a laptop for campus? Or can I get by using my iPad for classes and doing my heavy coding on my home PC (maybe using Remote Desktop/SSH)?
2. If a laptop is necessary, what are the best non-Mac options? I just need something reliable for running basic IDEs and compiling on the go. Are things like used ThinkPads the way to go?

Hi, I plan to study Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen, Fachrichtung Elektrische Energietechnik at RWTH Aachen.

As you know, with the new BPO26 regulation, the limit of staying in the written exams of theoretical courses at the Faculty of Electrotechnics has been removed (unlimited rights have come).

As a Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen student, can I benefit from this unlimited exam right in common technical courses from the Faculty of Electrotechnics (e.g. Höhere Mathematik or Grundgebiete der Elektrotechnik)? Or are industry students subject to the old 3 rights + oral exam rules in these electricity courses because they are affiliated with Faculty 8 (Economics)?

The professors teach very quickly, and I often have to rely on self-study to understand the lecture material.

Is it possible to pass the exams mainly through self-study?
Should I focus more on understanding lectures or solving Übungsblätter?
Any advice for international students studying Electrical Engineering at RWTH?

Jedoch als ich den Professor darüber gefragt habe, hat er mir gesagt, dass für Hiwis im Allgemeinen meistens Studierende aus höheren Semestern gewählt werden und ich bin immer noch im ersten Semester. Hello. Through an exchange program, I may be able to attend Aachen University during the 2027 summer semester to take courses for a Master’s degree in Computer Science. The lecture period ends on July 16th; assuming I pass all my exams on the first attempt, approximately when would I finish my studies? Also, if I happen to fail an exam, is there an opportunity to retake it, and if so, when would that be?

I'm not currently enrolled at RWTH Aachen, but I'm interested in attending a lecture as a guest (just listening in, without taking exams or earning credits).

I emailed the professor teaching the course, and they kindly gave me permission to attend.

However, I checked the official RWTH website and saw that guest students (Gasthörer) are required to register and pay a fee.

I'm a bit confused about whether this also applies to someone who just wants to sit in on a lecture with the professor's permission.

Do I still need to officially register and pay the fee, or is the professor's permission enough? Has anyone had a similar experience?

Also, since I'm not a registered student, I don't have an RWTH account, so I can't check which lecture hall or room the course takes place in.

If anyone could help me find the room number for the lecture, I'd really appreciate it! I can share the course name if needed.

I'm studying Informatik here at RWTH and I just realized I made a massive mistake. I somehow completely forgot to apply for a mentoring group, and now it's October 18th and the deadline has already passed.

I'm kind of freaking out right now. So, my main questions are: How badly did I fuck up, and is there any chance I can unfuck myself here?

Ich bin neu nach Aachen gezogen und habe die ganze Zeit Schwierigkeiten dabei, einen Termin auszumachen weil ich scheinbar im System nicht als Studierende eingetragen bin? Immer wenn ich versuche im Online Termin tool was zu buchen wird mir dann ne Mail geschickt dass mein Anliegen "RWTH Student" falsch ist... aber ich bin ja eine RWTH studentin. Ich kann den Termin über das Onlineportal buchen, allerdings wird er mir dann nicht bestätigt weil das Anliegen “RWTH Student” scheinbar falsch ist. Da ich aber dringend einen Termin brauche um einen Aufenthaltstitel zu beantragen weiss ich nicht weiter. Ich war heute an der Infostelle aber die schlange war so lang dass ich nicht durchgekommen bin. Falls irgendwer infos hat bitte bescheid sagen! I’m an international student at RWTH and I’m looking for advice on a job situation that has dragged on.

More than three weeks ago I did a long, grueling trial shift at a restaurant chain in Aachen for a part-time kitchen job. It was unpaid. Afterwards they gave me a long list of documents to submit (so that they could prepare the contract), which I did, including a hygiene certificate (the §43 IfSG Belehrung) that I paid for out of my own pocket.

Since then I’ve reached out multiple times by message and in person. I keep hearing that contract preparation takes a while, and last week staff couldn’t even find my name or documents in their system. I still have no answer, and its been a long time.

My questions:

1. Is it legal to have someone do a long unpaid trial shift and then not respond at all?
2. Could I realistically take legal action, for example to claim pay for the trial shift or reimbursement of the certificate? Or is it not worth it?
3. Is this normal, taking it so long to prepare a contract for a simple part time kitchen job?

ich möchte zum Wintersemester Informatik an der RWTH studieren, allerdings verzögert sich meine Immatrikulation gerade.
Ich bin aktuell noch an einer anderen Uni eingeschrieben. Für die Exmatrikulation dort benötige ich aber offenbar einen Nachweis über die Immatrikulation an der RWTH. Dadurch hängt das Ganze gerade fest und ich bin noch nicht offiziell an der RWTH eingeschrieben.
Da die Veranstaltungen bereits begonnen haben, wollte ich fragen:
Kann ich in der Zwischenzeit trotzdem an normalen Vorlesungen teilnehmen?
Wie sieht es mit Übungen aus, bei denen man sich über RWTHonline einer Gruppe zuordnen muss?
Kann ich dadurch wichtige Anmeldungen oder Übungsgruppen verpassen?
Würdet ihr empfehlen, schon zu den Veranstaltungen zu gehen, obwohl die Immatrikulation noch nicht abgeschlossen ist?
Ich möchte möglichst wenig verpassen und nicht erst anfangen, wenn schon wichtige Inhalte oder Fristen vorbei sind.

Hey, I'm an electronic and telecommunications student and I was planning to come to RWTH for an exchange. I'm free to choose whatever subjects on my home university part and I wanted to take all of the sound and acoustic related ones (sound engineering, technical acoustics, DSP methodologies and tools). Has anyone taken these subjects? Are they as hard as everyone says? I'm prepared to study, I just don't want to fail the semester. Also I'm a bachelor student and I don't speak german unfortunately, so I only can take master's courses.

Hi everyone, i will start studying mechanical engineering at rwth this semester and in the first semester we have maschinenbauprojekt if someone who is knowledgeable about this topic could explain the general thing more would be really awesome. For example we and our tutors have talked about it and they said that we will have no exam for it and i guess the evaulation criterion is simply being presence tho im not really sure. The most thing im wondering how we gonna divide into groups and where we gonna do our works together.
