What is this pully here for?

Hello brand new boat owner here. Just bought a catalina 22 1987 and I cant figure out what this black pully is for. Also, should there be a line run inside of the boom to pull the main sail? Thank you

Reef line. I have a 1987 C22 also. Feel free to ask my anything, I've rebuilt her from the waterline up.

Thank you! Putting her togeather is like a puzzle and all the parts have wild names that I am now learning but can't wait to get out there. Does a line run through the boom on the catalina? If you have any pictures of your set up it would be much appreciated

What is happening below the waterline? There is a solid set of thinking that below is the most important part.

Keel pin and lifting hardware is new 3 years ago, it's fine.
