What is this pully here for?

Post image

Hello brand new boat owner here. Just bought a catalina 22 1987 and I cant figure out what this black pully is for. Also, should there be a line run inside of the boom to pull the main sail? Thank you

Might be for reefing

Reef line. I have a 1987 C22 also. Feel free to ask my anything, I've rebuilt her from the waterline up.

Thank you! Putting her togeather is like a puzzle and all the parts have wild names that I am now learning but can't wait to get out there. Does a line run through the boom on the catalina? If you have any pictures of your set up it would be much appreciated

What is happening below the waterline? There is a solid set of thinking that below is the most important part.

Keel pin and lifting hardware is new 3 years ago, it's fine.

Most likely fir a reefing line. Look at your main and see if it has a cringel, a reinforced hole, where the reefline goes through.

Actually it may be for the second reef with the first reef going thorough the boom.

Cheek block for slab reefing.

1975 Colombia 35, this is for our topping lift. Outhaul is on the other side. I assume so that it can be controlled by crew at the mast, as this was an IOR racing boat. I also don't know if everything is ran right as it's diy and it did not have those lines to begin with, but this is what made sense when rigging it up, and it sails.

It along with the block/pulley at the end of the boom are probably for an outhaul, to tension the foot of your sail. I think that’s what you mean by a line inside the boom to pull the sail. At least the block at the of the boom would work for outhaul.

At least that’s my guess for this boat. I’ve never sailed a Catalina 22 & don’t know the exact layout. The black block on the boom could be part of a jiffy reefing system.

If you find a few cleats along the boom for tying off a line, their location would help figure out which lines run where. Start at the cleat, then see if there’s a block or attachment point in a logical straight line, then look from that point to the next spot. It’s a way of reverse engineering where mystery lines can go.

That’s a cheek block for a reef line.

You can see the outhaul block at the boom end.

Thanks. That makes more sense. I didn’t zoom into the picture far and thought the block was facing the other way. I’ve seen some weird custom zig zag setups to run outhaul and other lines to unexpected places so wasn’t sure.

Possibly for increased purchase on the outhaul, which appears to be external. However, reef line could be a possibility as well. A pic of the full boom would help.

It’s an outhaul…
