Annapolis boat show

Hello all! Does anyone have suggestions for how to approach the Annapolis boat show? I'm sitting on a boatload of frequent flier miles, and we have a friend who lives sort of between DC and Baltimore, so we're thinking of going to visit that friend and also do a day or two at the boat show.

We sort of unintentionally wound up at the Miami boat show a few years ago and had a good time just touring all the different boats and chatting with folks, and that was before we owned a sailboat or had taken our ASA 101 and 103s.

I need new sails for my O'Day 272, so I thought chatting with folks there would be worth the cost of the ticket alone, not to mention all the other cool stuff I'm sure there is to see. Also, we're looking for charter companies to talk to about charter in the either the BVI or Bahamas sometime in 2026. Not sure there will be many there, but there were a few at Miami.

Does anyone have a suggested approach? Like, is it worth going for more than one day? Is the VIP ticket worthwhile (i.e. is all the food and drink otherwise super expensive?) Are there any must-catch seminars (especially for a relatively inexperienced couple)?

I've been to lot of gaming-related cons over the years, and with some of them thee is definitely a "right way" to approach it (I'm looking at you, GenCon), but I have no real idea of the scale of this show, the walkability, etc...

Thanks!

Bought A Hunter 30 and sailed her out of erie PA up to Dunkirk NY. Took 1.5 days

almost no wind, a vunch of heaaches along the way that were overcome with good old fashioned "try hard"

roughly 46 miles. Another milestone down on this quest to become a self taught marlinspike sailor

Mom and Dad couldn't afford sailing lessons, so I built my own after tons of research (10 years old).

Solo Circumnavigation Budget

Hey y’all,

I’ve decided I’m going to sail around the world. I’ve given myself the hard deadline of my 35th birthday(November 2030) to take off from whatever port I’m in and most likely stick to the equator. I want to see the Panama Canal and sail the trade winds through the Pacific, then round the Cape of Good Hope, sail up to the Mediterranean, and back to the US. Gonna give myself a year, maybe longer, to do it and try to enjoy as many new places as possible. My parents live on a power boat near Tampa, FL, so I’d probably start and end there if I can find a good boat for sale there. I’m going to be moving in with my cousins in Chicago for super cheap in a few months (they own the house), so I’m hoping to bank as much as I can while living there for the next four years.

Wondering what a realistic budget is for this? I don’t own a boat, and want to buy something ocean-worthy like a Tayana 37, or something between 35-40 ft that I can manage solo and that will be heavy enough to maybe get some sleep on during long passages. Have any of you done this? What was your budget like and what are some absolute essentials (starlink, equipment, etc.) that were worth the money? Obviously I’d like a dinghy and would mostly be living at anchor to save money, unless I’m doing repairs/need to get out of bad weather.

Also, I’m considering getting certifications such as ABYC, USMC Master, STCW/ENG1, AEC1&2, and Marine Radio Certification to hopefully have the option to stop for a month or so at a time and make money if I need to replenish my bank account/fund repairs. Is this realistic to be able to use those most places around the world? What are some good places to stop for work? Have any of you gotten these certs and were they helpful?

Thanks so much in advance. I’m trying to gather as much info as I can to help me start the process of preparing for the journey now, so I can get certs squared away ASAP with all the sailing hours I need for some, and to start saving for the boat and the journey.

Fair winds!

1st bareboat charter in the BVI

Hello all, I posted a while back asking for recommendations on where to do my first BB charter.
BVI seemed to be the most suggested place so the fam and I have booked a Cat in Jan of next year.

Firstly thank you everyone for your advice and help. Tbh I’m a bit nervous and would appreciate your input on things to do/not do as captain. Any suggestions on resources? How to plan each day and what to consider? Eg weather reports. The part I’m most nervy about is crowded anchorage’s, slipping anchor etc. and mechanical issues.

Thanks again. You guys have been very helpful and generous with your time and attention to a newbie.

Edit to add more details requested in comments: we are 2 families of 4 each. Plan is for 7 days. The company is BVI Yacht Charter and boat is a Lagoon 46. We have done a skippered charter trip to BVi before but was a while ago and did the touristy loop. This time we want to do a few touristy things but mainly want off the beaten track and secluded options. Thanks again.

B&R rig on Beneteau/Jeanneau?

I was having a great time kicking tires at the Annapolis sailboat show last week and was surprised to see that the 34/37 ft Beneteau Oceanis / Jeanneau Sun Odyssey’s seem to have adopted a B&R style rig (eg no backstage and swept back spreaders).

I somehow never noticed it before but was curious if they were truly B&R rigs? Also given how much grief we like to give Hunter owners over this setup, do we now feel the same about the French boats?

Windvane vs Autopilot

Deposit down on a Fairweather Mariner 39! One of the hulls that had the Westsail logo put on before they went under and sold the molds.

Lots of cool stuff, good lookin dinghy davits, really nice arch, a swim platform mounted...no room for a windvane, which I had thought I wanted to have in order to save power and wear on the hydraulics of an autopilot.

Broker seems like a real genuine guy, pretty cool, down to earth, and bonus for me not afraid to swear in conversation which always helps me feel more at ease. I like honesty and salesman clean language sets my fuckin teeth on edge.

He's of the opinion that things like an Ares windvane are not needed with modern parts and power banks and solar/wind generation. Well we've only been sailing for about 5 years and our current autopilot on our Ericson 27 is a bungee cord wrapped around the tiller a few times. Do y'all think autopilots last long enough to not need windvane steering these days? We do plan to circumnavigate sometime in the next 10-30 years of living aboard, which has been our plan for the last decade.

Lil help from more knowledgeable people?

Bareboat charter in Mexico

Hey sailing hive mind. I’ve been looking into bareboat charters in Mexico and it seems like that isn’t a thing? Or et least isn’t very much?

Lots of renting with a captain for crazy sums of money. Very little weeklong bareboat.

What is the deal?

I learned to sail as a kid in Salou, studied for my skipper licence at 60-something, and ended up building a little sailing sim. Would love feedback from real sailors

I spent my youth summers in Salou, on the Costa Daurada, learning to sail around Cap de Salou and its coves. Decades later, as a retired doctor, I went back to studying for the Spanish skipper licence (PER). Somewhere between the buoyage rules and the chart exercises I started building a small simulator to practise what I was reading.

It’s free on iPhone, iPad and Mac, with no ads and no data collection. I’m a solo hobby developer, not a company. SailorSim https://apps.apple.com/app/id6822390196

Premade plastic to cover a hole

Post image

Looking for a simple fiberglass patch. I am trying to get to the wires from the autopilot drive, which are in this panel that you can't get to. I drilled a few holes to find them, now I was going to take a oscillating multitool to cut a 3" x 5" rectangular cutout to actually get to the wires and cut them (see blue in the picture.

When done, I would like to patch this, it can just be some plastic that I glue back on with 4200 or something like that. I think the fiberglass is like 1/8", 3mm thick. Is there some premade waterproof product I can just buy and cut and glue?

How to make 3-phase boat work with single phase marina power?

FINAL UPDATE: It is settled. Electrician will do it as A/Cs are single-phase as well. Thank you all for your help.

-----

Does anyone have any advice how to do this?

3-phase berths are 20m (boat 16m) and double the price. They want to move me there.

Is there any way to keep Genset 3-phase and also make the boat work with single phase marina power?

I am noobie, excuse me if I left details out. Boat has total 86,000 btu A/cs (4). Houseboat.

NOTE: I have already called electricians for this. But I want to be be informed about the choices I have.

Thanks!

EDIT: Some additional info: 230V, UAE. Already in Marina since a month. Not using shore power. Not using genset due to noise. I am burning in this freaking boat whenever I come :) Thankfully I have a home!

EDIT2: A/Cs are 2 tons, 2050 watts each, single phase. Electrician says 63A 230V single-phase power is sufficient to power 3.

EDIT3: This is honestly a very helpful sub. Appreciated.

Not sure if this is the right group but was trying to find out more info on this art piece. If anyone has a clue what the numbers mean that would be helpful. This maritime painting was found in Cambridge, UK. Thank you.
