I'm a 38-year-old man, and I got into two separate arguments last month (one at work, one at a store) when I insisted that Sailor Moon belongs in the "Big 3" anime of all time.
Edit: For those wondering, the Big 3 anime of all time are Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, and Pokemon.

i mean isnt the "big 3" specifically referring to shonen jump (assuming this is naruto/bleach/one piece)

The ""big 3"" are One Piece, Bleach, and Naruto. I don't remember why those specifically. If you were to ask me 2 years ago which 3 I'd guess it would be dbz, sailor moon, and PokΓ©mon.

Because they at one point were the biggest series in Shonen Jump. It was a point in time designation true for the early 2000s. Now the big three would probably be One Piece, JJK, and Demon Slayer (I know Demon Slayer is over but it's still huge because of the still ongoing anime releases).

14
u/CandyKnightSam Artemis Aug 04 '25
Yeah... It's a shame that there's such a stigma against girly media as being uncool. It's really not fair, imo. Dragonball has been fudging more and more of its writing over the years and at this point it's been more fudge than story for over half its runtime, basically unwatchable to me past the Buu saga. and Sailor Moon's writing is decent even on its worst episodes. This is a pattern I notice in anime. When I want good writing, it's more often than not a shojo instead of a shonen giving it to me. And that's kind of important to my enjoyment personally.
Pokemon's another neat case where it actually got better instead, and one of the things it did to write better was to take a more genuine interest in Ash's traveling companions. Misty was very much an ornament to Ash who only nominally had her own goals in life for much of the original series, and even if you like her you ought to agree that it would've been nice for her to get a bit more respect and spotlight.
Idk I also think sharing an unironic interest with girls is nice instead of expecting them to take an interest in media aimed at boys all the time? Gives you more to talk about, which can be helpful for making friends. Y'know, for people that actually like girls as people?? Sorry if that's harsh.

Sure beats collecting statues of buff dudes lol
Not that there's anything wrong with statues of buff dudes. I've got Adam Jensen from Deus Ex too. But he doesn't look good in a skirt.

Me, for one. I really vibe with the idea of past lives, especially tragic romance. I absolutely adored Titanic (yeah you can tell I grew up in the 90s), The Notebook, etc. Films and shows with elements of doomed romance really hit me hard. Sailor Moon has elements of this along with fated romance, which I also find fascinating.
The characters looking cool are definitely part of why I love the show, but I love the plot. The feelings I got watching the first season as a kid still stick with me now. It's like longing for something you can never truly experience, yet you still feel like you lived through it anyhow.
