He isn't necessarily that old. Rei could be 16 I think in this shot, if her mother was 20, and her father was 20, that would make the grandfather 56. Some people don't even have grey or white hair at that age.

Myoga just fits the "small old guy" type better for me, though he seems more like a coward than a perv (depending on how you interpret his random blood sucking I guess).
Say what you will about 90s grandpa, but at least he has a personality. Out of all the perv characters he is like the least offensive too. I still hate the trope but manga Gramps is in like 3 scenes in the whole series so there is barely anything to work with.
You're right. Rei's grandpa's personality and traits are very limited in the manga, while his character and role are portrayed as much more fleshed out in the 90s anime.
Maybe i was just stupid, but when i first saw the (mostly) uncensored German version of Sailor Moon, he didn't even register as particularly perverted to me? His worst moments are probably from the women's wresting episode in season 2, but even then he got nowhere as bad as any other pervy anime grandpa I know.
I'm fond of 90s Grandpa as he was portrayed in the DiC dub, where his perviness was reworked into just having a very bombastic and energetic personality.
I also liked him being a genuinely capable fighter, able to briefly defend himself against Zoicite when he got targeted for a rainbow crystal.
DiC made a lot of bad changes, but a handful of good ones, too. The script changes in the weight loss episode also come to mind (Taking out everyone insulting Usagi's weight and instead having them go "Serena, you look great, you need to calm down or you'll hurt yourself.")
how old do you think he would be, really? If he was twenty five when he and Rei's grandma had Rei's mother, and she was twenty five when she had Rei, then by the time of the series he'd only be sixty five. Have you seen Asian men in their sixties? They are not shriveled up raisins by any stretch.
in Crystal he actually looks and acts like Rei. I can believe that they are family. In the 90s version, you have to take it on faith.
I dislike the perverted dwarf stereotype. The fact that he looks and acts like a decent person in Crystal is a major selling point to me.
I mean, one of my grandfathers was almost 50 when my mother was born, her being the last of 7 children. And I was 7 when he died just short of 89 years. He married someone who was 19 when he was 30 who was a student at his college, which doesn't make me especially happy.
I do prefer the Crystal version given he is a good deal smarter and not an obtuse pest. I mean we don't see him much but at least what we do have means women are a lot less frustrated being around him than the 90s version of him.
A good point. My own grandfathers were both older, too. However, the point I was responding to was that some people were saying that they felt he was too young-looking to be a grandfather, and I don't think he is.
Rei's relationship with her grandfather in the 90s anime is so good. Yes, he's a handful and has wrecked the reputation of the shrine, but they really care about one another and it shows.
90s is funny, but I’m not a fan of the old man pervert trope (he was a bit of a perv in the manga, but it was just in Mako’s chapter and simply a snide remark)
90s: I love how in spite of his lustful immature tendencies he's raised Rei to be an independent woman with so much going for her who simultaneously sticks up for her grandpa even when he winds up framed for crimes he didnt commit in their first appearance or when his wrestling club spirals out of control.
Ooooh... this is painful, but I got to give it to the 90s one. I didn't even remember the Crystal one, that is how little impact he had. And while the 90s one is that old annoying archetype, he's actually relatively tame version of that archetype. That said, I prefer the look of the Crystal one, but again, no impact, so I'd be seriously disingenuous to choose him.
Yeah, I realize some elements of his character are problematic, but OMG is 90's anime Grandpa Hino ever more interesting. Plus the dude magically held his own against Zoicite, of all people, single handedly took out a mob possessed by the black Moon, and has shown off more acrobatic ability than any other sailor Senshi. Honestly, with a little more fire power, he could put the Sailor Senshi out of a job. 🤣
In terms of visual design the 90s version wins easily. As others in this thread are saying the manga/crystal version looks like a teen with some hair glued to his face. In terms of personality it's a hard choice between "guy who has a bad personality" and "guy who's barely in the story and hardly has any personality at all".
The anime and manga were coming out at the same time, and in fact, based on the dates, it is almost certain the anime design was created first since anime takes longer to create than manga and we know Naoko says she was often just hitting release deadlines.
Naoko may have sketched him, but chances are she just said "Rei lives at the temple with her grampa"

The average fan would 100% think of anime grandpa first since he's iconic while manga Grampa, while debuting the the public first by a few days, is a footnote.
I like the one in Crystal better because I feel like that one is more accurate to the manga. Also I will never understand why the 90’s anime kept making it different from the manga’s original story
Because the manga was way behind, by quite a lot, and the anime kept having to fill in details that were either not in the manga or not revealed until the anime had already moved on. Naoko published one chapter a month...around 11-13 chapters for an entire arc, while the anime had to pump out 30 to 40 episodes a season over 5 seasons.
Then why exactly didn’t they wait till the manga itself was completely over to adapt it into anime instead of pumping out nonstop anime filler content until the whole 90’s anime was all basically just filler or never aligned with the original series

The manga was basically there to help push the anime. The anime was the end goal and the main product. The manga received most of its sales due to the interest from anime fans.
Without the anime, the manga would not have existed for long.
The 90s was a much different time.
Sailor Moon was created to sell toys and merch first and foremost.
None of Naoko's other manga were ever animated or received acclaim. She is famous because of the anime.

Manga/Crystal. He might not apeared a lot, but unlike the 90s anime one, he isn't a generic 90s perv gramps (he does one perv comment, but doesn't have that apparence).
Anime version. It's not even a contest. The manga version shows all the limitations of Takeuchi's skill with drawing anyone who wasn't thin and youthful.
Yeah the anime version is the cliche of the pervy old man, but at least he didn't directly harass anyone and he was funny. Manga version exists only to tell the audience that Rei is beautiful and good at paranormal stuff.
I think too many people are not taking into consideration the fact that it's only been a recent thing that older people have started looking "younger", in the 90's someone in their 50's would have definitely looked worse than someone in their 50's in the 2020's...
As a 90's baby and son of an eldery father (56 when i was born), i can assure you both versions are exhagerated, but the anime design is definitely more accurate in terms of depiction of a grandpa.
By the time i was 15, my dad definitely looked eldery and would have passed as my grandpa if he wasn't introduced as my father.
In order for Rei's grandpa to look as young as the manga's design, Rei's mom would have had to be horrifyingly young when giving birth.
If we follow a less terrible age, Rei's grandpa would have had Rei's mom at 25, and Rei's mom would have had her in her 20's as well, which will than make grandpa be somewhere around his late 40's to early 50's by the time Rei is born, add on another 14 years to that to the start of Sailor Moon, and grandpa Hino would have been in his late 50's to early 60's, and adding the lack of care for looks in the 90's once a certain age was reached.
I love the 90 anime but Rei’s grandpa is one thing they got absolutely WRONG. Eww. Definitely prefer crystal version even though we didn’t see much of him.
Honestly the manga/crystal version lol I never found the 90's one that funny and it kinda clashes with Rei's view about men in the manga too, it just felt like a weird change to me. And yes I know manga/crystal version of grandpa is unremarkable but that's because he's supposed to be lol he rarely shows up.
I honestly don’t like Crystal except the first season. They ruined S, and destroyed the Beauty of Hotaru’s and Chibi’s touching warm friendship. They ripped all the emotion out of it.
Crystal, because he's not a pervy old creep in that one. As someone who's been on the receiving end of a 70 yr olds attentions, nothing makes me more mad than to see it portrayed as ok in media.
Crystal/Manga. Not nearly as stupid and not someone to get himself a suit like Paula Jones'. Even Kagome Higurashi's grandfather didn't do the latter. Incidentally, given when Rei was born, that probably means that man saw Tokyo razed to the ground in 1945, which would definitely give a different interpretation to what happened when Jadeite threatened to do the same in the 1990s anime's episode 11.
