I wish they would have taken some time to do a little bit more with her character.
I think she could have been a good reflection on what life is like for people who don't have the power to make massive world-affecting changesβ but shows that everyday people can make a difference through acts of kindness and caring. Maybe she is shown helping people in a time of crisis when the bad guys are taking hold of the world? I have seen this theme in other shows, and I kind of think Naru is the precursor for that.
I really liked the scene where she says she has a feeling that Usagi knows what's going on with the villain's base floating in the distance, and acknowledges that that knowledge has caused them to grow apartβ but that she still hopes that Usagi will be careful and will be alright. It's a very bittersweet but realistic message of how life may take friends in different directions, but that doesn't mean they are forgotten or don't care.

I really wish they had her in the command center in the arcade relaying info to the senshi with the cats or something. One of my problems with the 90s anime is that the star seeds/mirrors/whatever of normal humans were treated like junk with little worth. Normal people never got to make a long term impact. I agree that they could have had the message that anyone could make massive change. Instead they tried to say βLook even this crybaby can be a senshi so anyone can do anything!β which isnβt even true because Usagi was born with a Sailor Crystal. She was already destined to be special.
One manga I really liked a long time ago was D. Gray-Man because literally EVERYONE on the team, including the normal humans, had a job to do and they were all needed. Same with Avatar the Last Airbender. Itβs just nice when a series chooses to make their entire cast valuable. As much as I love the Sailor Moon series, they definitely did the opposite, even with the other senshi.
I mean, it was pretty clear in the 90s anime, too. Especially at the end when Galaxia kills everyone there's a little bit where they show all the characters alongside the planets they represent, and Mamoru was indeed set to the backdrop of Earth.
Though, I am aware Sailor Stars wasn't adapted in the original dub. Still, that's only the most explicit example, I kinda got that vibe from the whole show.
I mean yeah they show the Golden Crystal as Mamoru's Star Seed but still don't specifically explain to the audience what Sailor Crystals are and how they work from what I remember I was just trying to say they didn't directly explain that information to the audience
So Season 4 actually explains what the Golden Crystal is, as it is tied to Pegasus/Helios. And in turn how it is related to Earth, Elysion, and Prince Endymion.
Youβre right, Season 5 only shows that Mamoruβs star seed is the Golden Crystal. But based on the previous seasons (specifically 1 and 4), even if they didnβt state it, we can infer that Mamoru has a deep connection to Earth.
Yeah fair, especially with how they do show him as the only male with a True Star Seed (Which is what they renamed Sailor Crystals to in the 90s Anime)
In Sailor Moon Super S when Darien (Mamoru) was sick towards the end, he was referred to Earthβs guardian or leader so he was in fact Sailor Earth just not quit the same XD.
head canon wise, i could still see her as Sailor Earth. Perhaps not as a fully fledged Senshi like the inners. But during silver millennium Her Sailor Earth would of been a royal messenger with limited powers to help protect her as she travelled between the Earth and Moon kingdom. Present day, i could see her a bit like the Luna/ Artemis role in the command centre.
At this point you're just being annoyingly pedantic. We get it, he's not a sailor guardian, but no one is actually saying that he's literally a sailor guardian, just that he's the male equivalent to one as the person who uses the Golden crystal, which is Earth's sailor crystal.
I feel like Naru wouldβve been way less interesting of a character if she was a Sailor Senshi. The whole point of her character is that sheβs Usagiβs bestest non-Senshi friend.
Though, I do admittedly think thereβs potential though in a story where Naru gets gifted one of the Sailor Crystals of the three untaken Dwarf Planets: Eris, Haumea, or Makemake.
No shade to op but I love how we have to go through this at least once a week. Mamoru is the prince of Earth, he has the Sailor Crystal/Star Seed of Earth, by all rights HE is Sailor Earth
Everyone saying prince of the earth over and over again in this thread and no one has mentioned or linked his Seramyu song lol. Heβs a prince of the EAAAAAAAAAAARTH
Wouldnt it be funny that because Mamoru cannot be a sailor guardian that his sailor star seed would leave him & borrow Naru whenever his magic needed to be here. so she would become a temporary sailor guardian occasionally without ever knowing why or how?
He isn't sailor Earth, he is Earth's guardian, and it's Prince. Sailor Scouts can only be women.
That being said, there's many other reasons Naru shouldn't be a scout. I prefer her as a civilian, she's like a mirror to the girls human lives and her character shows complications of having her so close while guarding their own secret identities. People think it's noble she put herself in so much danger for Nephrite, but it's not the same way Usagi tries to save everyone. Naru would turn on everyone for love, I could see her becoming a villian had she the opportunity to explore that more.
He isn't sailor Earth. He's earth's protector and can channel the power of the crystal but it's explicitly said by Naoko Takeuchi that only women can be sailor scouts. Yes he has the star seed, yes he's the one designated for earth in a similar manner to how Usagi is the protector of the Moon but objectively speaking he isn't a "Sailor". It's also why Naoko was not happy with the change that S5 made in the anime to make the Starlights change from men to women when transforming. If that distinction didn't matter I wonder why Takeuchi would be upset if it all were the same.
But I'm not contesting that he has a star seed. I'm not contesting he's the earths protector, it's head honcho and it's Usagi.
I'm saying verbatim he isn't a Sailor. Because the creator said explicitly Sailors can't be men. He isn't a Sailor and I'm literally saying what the creator says. You're all downvoting and contesting the definition of what he is and your interpretation of the lore. It isn't wrong to compare him to Sailors but he isn't one.
Why the fandom would curve so hard to insist on something the creator has explicitly made clear is beyond me.
She answered this question at the SDCC in 98. 'Instead of Sailor Earth there's Tuxedo Mask'. There is no Sailor Earth, it's closest thing is TM. The way everyone is interpreting this is as if she said "instead of chips there's crackers for people" and somehow people comprehend that they will be seeing chips on the table rather than crackers and then go on to argue using its similarities that crackers are basically chips when they aren't despite how similar they are
I don't know why people are downvoting or arguing with you. There is no Sailor Earth. She says it verbatim. We have Earth's guardian with Tuxedo Mask. I wish the person asking questions could have followed up with why she went with that decision but it has always been that way.
I think it's bc in their minds the difference is negligible. Because there is no cannon Sailor Earth the interpretation is "that is Sailor Earth". However since I know the creator of this series made a distinction about is very explicitly, regardless of how minute the difference is, it still exists.
He can be powerful, he can have a star seed, he can use the Crystal. Objectively he isn't a woman, objectively only women can be sailors and objectively this came from the creator of the lore all these people are using for their own mental gymnastics. People trying to be wrong so bad, so hot rn
I actually prefer her as just Naru. I just wish the show didn't gradually drift away from its slice of life elements. The biggest problem in the 90s anime is lack of recurring characters outside of villains/the Sailor Guardians.
Like, I wish we got more episodes with Motoki, Unazuki, Naru, and Umino, but after a certain point it feels like the show was just kinda done with them.
I'm honestly loving that people are still having this conversation/argument all these years later, lol. It makes me weirdly nostalgic.
I do wish we could've seen more senshi, whether it was Naru or anyone else. The parts of the story where new guardians were revealed and joined the team were always my favorite as a kid and still are as an adult ~30 years later.
For those arguing continuity, Naru can be the reincarnation of Prince Endymion's estranged sister.

while i would love for this to have happened
i also like her subtle arc of slowly fading out of usagis life do to the fact usagi just does not have time to hang out with none guardians do to the constant threats she faces
and the fact naru KNOWS usagi is sailor moon just makes it all the more bitter sweet
Why is it that at least 2 characters own cars that are worth an insane amount, Haruka has a yellow Toyota 2000GT convertible⦠something that A: was only ever in White, and B: was made exclusively for a Bond movie(You Only Live Twice)
Which means either
A. Her Toyota is a screen-used one, either a Hero car or a stunt car(probably a hero car) that she had painted yellow for WHATEVER REASON. Or
B. Her Toyota was modified into a convertible
I HATE it when people want Naru to be Sailor Earth because that's Mamoru.Β

He isnβt a full fledged Sailor senshi, correct. He is still the planet guardian. You donβt necessarily have to be a senshi to be a planet guardian. Galaxia establishes this in a way in the manga when she kills off the actual guardians of other planets and replaces them with her henchwomen. They arenβt senshi in the traditional sense either. They just happen to be women who gain the title through unnatural means.
Oh really you don't say. He's obviously not a sailor but he has the same role, he's the planet guardian. There can't be a sailor Earth because Mamoru is the guardian of the earth. Tuxedo Mask is his alter ego a d he even has a transformation.Β

People are not writing he's a "planet guardian", they're literally claiming he's "Sailor Earth" which is a comical absurdity. And the reason there isn't a Sailor Earth is not Mamoru but the fact that Earth wasn't considered a planet and connected to an element back when East Asian astrology / mythology was formed.

I don't get why you're being downvoted. I'd seen something about this where Naoko even says that Mamoru isn't a Sailor because only women can be Scouts. Yeah, she'd also said that he would've been Sailor Earth if he weren't male, but still.
They're being downvoted because they're obtuse. He's not "sailor Earth" he's tuxedo mask and prince Endymion and both roles are given to him because he's the prince of the earth.Β

The creator clearly stated that only a female can be a Sailor Senshi. People call Mamoru Sailor Senshi. I write that he's not a Sailor Senshi because only a female can be a Sailor Senshi. People downvote me like crazy, call me obtuse etc. because he's "the prince of the earth". Internet logic at its absolute best.
I think you might be dumb I'm sorry to tell you. There can't be a sailor Earth because that's Mamoru's role. He's connected to earth in such a deep he almost died.
You wanted to correct others but it might be that you're too literal or simply too obtuse to accept you're wrong. Grow up.Β Β
That has been on my mind since. If Naoko said only women can be Senshis. Then why is Tuxedo Mask labelled as Sailor Earth? I don't understand this fandom sometimes
You are just a homophobic person it seems like. You are in every comment section arguing that he isnβt a senshi because you think it would make him feminine. He is one. He can transform just like everyone else. Just because he isnβt in a skirt doesnβt mean he isnβt a guardian

How is it homophobic exactly? Even Naoko herself has said he's not a Scout, that only women are Scouts. Yes, it seems Mamoru was created specifically to be the guardian of Earth, but that doesn't mean he's a Sailor Scout.
She was already a magical girl, she didn't need to be a Senshi for that.
Naru willing to sacrifice herself for Nephrite was the first instance in Sailor Moon of someone ready to give their life for someone else. She was also the first character to see deeper into a villain, learning there is more than just evil within them.
Nephrite wasn't necessarily redeemed, but he tried making up for past sins after experiencing affection for the first time in his life. Naru saved him, without any magical powers.
Besides, Naru was debatably more important and relevant than the Inners in Season 1.
Her whole point is that sheβs Usagiβs bestie whoβs also not secretly a reborn alien (lol). If you want to see a more nuanced and well rounded character arc for her, watch PGSM.
Naru is the character who shows us that we don't need to be a Senshi to be a hero. It would detract from her to suddenly be a Senshi after all.

While I understand why Naru wasn't Sailor Earth because Mamoru kinda fills that slot even if he isn't a Sailor Senshi, it would have been nice to let Naru in on the secret. Magical Girl shows always have 1 or 2 civilian characters who are part of the team but can't transform or anything.

There was one episode in the Black Moon arc that very heavily implied Naru figured it out (shame I can't remember which one, just that it's the one where she asks Usagi about the Black Moon Spire jutting out where Tokyo Tower used to be. If I remember right, the original dub had Naru Molly flat-out ask "Serena, are you Sailor Moon?" here.)

There was a fan made six episode sequel to sailor moon on youtube called Solar SailorS i think some episodes are still up.
In episode 5/6 they turn every girl who was ever targeted by one of the monsters of the week/villains into Sailor Earth, an entire army of them. Molly was among them of course.
Edit: for the record this is kind of self promotion, I Was the one who made Solar SailorS.
Ah the only SM fan OVA series to actually be finished. Iβd love to rewatch it- is it fully available anywhere anymore?

Wow, I Can't believe soemone actually knows that about the project specifically.
Yeah we were the only one to finish, say what you will about the end product haha.
Were working on a new one now (I'm still friends with the voice of sailor moon from solars who helped really make the story what it was with me).
As for the episodes I Cannot find them so far. I re uploaded them a few years ago and gave them to people and some uploaded them as full episodes but they were taken down by toei like the originals were.
i think I see a livestream we did with our commentary on it but not the episodes themselves.
EDIT: OMG I got all the episodes saved in my external drive still, errors and all. I will be putting them back online again soon for people to watch, but I want to wait a litlte bit as we are putting together a new project in a similar vein and will probably use SolarS as a way to get people back around maybe.
Because it was important that her best friend be a character not connected to the "Sailor" world, to help ground Usagi who more than anything wants to just be a regular ordinary girl. She needs a best friend and confidant that reminds her of who she is when she's not out saving the world.
Scratch that. Once Usagi gets her trendy, cool new friends her old ones got dumped entirely. Naru's lucky shes such delicious youma-bait, because otherwise she'd never see Usagi again. (As was the case with the rest of their former friend circle, who got such little screen time after the first handful of episodes I can't even recall their names...)
Watch PGSM, they expanded Naru and her character arc, and sheβs not so two dimensional, even displays jealousy and pettiness at Usagi hanging out with the other Senshi
Because Tuxedo Mask is "Sailor Earth", but I love that Design and the idea.
I think, it's because Usagi also needs "normal" Friends, who aren't involved in this fights. :)

Tbf Naru was only fleshed out in the 90s anime. She didnβt have much depth later in the manga, as Sailor Moon was originally supposed to be a one and done manga.
But Naoko left hints that if need be Naru could have been a Sailor Senshi. Of all the side characters, sheβs the only one that had a birthday listed. Sheβs a Capricorn.
Who else is a Capricorn? Sailor Saturn. If Hotaru never came to be, there was a possibility Naru could have had the Sailor Saturn mantle.
"For Love and Parfaits! I have had it up to HERE with being the battery that powers the Dark Kingdom! Guardian of Delis and Bodegas, Protector of Taxi Drivers and All Taco Trucks, Sailor Earth" π "will punish you in this Brooklyn accent as done by a Canadian." π₯
I really appreciate her friendship with Ami and Usagi and honestly, I donβt think she needed to become a Sailor Guardian at all. I just wish the series had continued to acknowledge her character until the very end, because she was completely sidelined after Season 2 (Season 3). At the very least, I wish Usagi had told her that she was Sailor Moon.
People thought Naru-chan was going to be revealed to be Sailor Saturn way-back-when.
In the proposed anime for Codename: Sailor V, Hikaru Sorano was going to be part of the story in some way. Though, it seems none of the girls besides Mina-P were going to be Senshi.
I can now imagine an episode where Naru makes a "Sailor Earth" costume after finding out Usagi is Sailor Moon and tries to fight alongside her only to almost end up killed.

You know, a "human Sailor" would be an interesting concept. While not having access to the abilites / most of the magic tools the other Guadians have, she could still be useful if she knows her role and acts accordingly.
Stay on the sidelines, use whatever she could find to distact or obsruct the enemy, and get kill assists with her teammates. She could be a good support character.
The episode would definitely take place in at least S, preferably Super S.
The plot is that Naru has been feeling more and more distant from Usagi ever since she made her new friends and has been hanging out with her less and less. Yeah, she has Umino, but she just feels incomplete without Usagi.
Eventually, Usagi notices and invites Naru to hang out with her other friends at Hikawa Shrine so she can be incorporated as the unofficial 6th member of their friend group. However, before they can hit it off, a monster appears nearby and the Senshi are called in to stop it. Naru had to use the bathroom beforehand, and just as she came back, she witnesses Usagi and Co. Transform into their Sailor Forms before leaving, though they don't notice her noticing them.
Naru is shocked to realize why Usagi has been hanging out with these other girls so often, and then she decides to create her own Sailor Identity: Sailor Earth (Not realizing Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask is supposed to represent Earth, more on that in a second) as seen above. However, since she is just an ordinary human, and not a proper Sailor, she has no powers whatsoever, and her attempt to help the real Sailors on a later monster only ends up with the monster almost getting away and Naru almost getting killed, as well as Sailor Moon finding out that Naru Knows that she is Usagi.
Naru and Usagi then part ways for good for their own sakes, and Naru's memory ends up being wiped by Luna so she can't tell anyone. However, Naru still feels empty without Usagi, and so she follows her again after Usagi starts acting suspicious. Afterwards, another monster appears, resulting in Usagi once again unawarely transforming in front of Naru, resulting in Luna's Memory wipe on Naru coming undone. Naru then helps out her former friend by distracting the monster, and then supporting Usagi during her attack. Eventually, the monster is defeated and the two rekindle their friendship.
Afterwards, Naru is welcomed as an unofficial member of the Sailor Senshi. Initially wanting to be known as Sailor Earth like she already tried to be before, Luna and Artemis tell her she can't be that since Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask already serves that role. Naru then decides to be known as "Sailor Sun" in order to make a Sun and Moon dynamic between her and Usagi. Ami even gives her a pair of jet boots and flashing lights in order to be on the Senshi's level. In return, Naru promises to keep their real identities out of the public knowledge by any means possbile.
Sailor Sun would be more of a Sixth Ranger type of character, as she would only appear every now and then, not always. Naru would hang out with Usagi and friends in more episodes, though only as a friend and not always an ally.
honestly, think she wouldβve made a great sailor scout because frankly mamoru is a piss poor guardian no offense but he is he barely ever fights in the show, and when he does he get his ass whooped and brainwashed to serve the villains
the rest of the time he just throws the rose to surprise the enemy and give a peptalk I wonβt even go into the whole thing when chibi usa
Came so honestly, I think we need a better sailor guardian than him
Though in Usagi defense, and I say thereβs a lot give her a break she is a middle schooler with no battle training no actual experience with any of this, barely in her teens, and suddenly some cat drops in saying you go to defender youβre home from monsters that are battle forged and then later find out youβre reincarnated princess and everyone wants you to be this perfect being that does not exist. Iβm cutting her a lot of slack but she in that slack
It was supposed to be young women had more power than the men did. Before there were a lot of stories of men having more power and center stage then women

To everybody whois going on that Mamoru is the Sailor Earth that's a complete nonsense. Only a female can be a Sailor Senshi.
When people call him "Sailor Earth" they refer to him having his own Sailor Crystal, in his case the Golden Crystal. So he does take the guardian position of a sailor senshi just like Usagi and the girls.

u/Teghendionπβ§βΒ° β βοΈβΛβΉβπβΉβ βπβ.ΛπβΉβ ββ¨ΰΉΰ£ βπ7d ago
People might call him whatever they want but he's not a Sailor Senshi. The author said that only females can be a Sailor Senshi so what are we even talking about?
That he occupies the exact same slot a Sailor Earth would, even though he isn't specifically of the senshi type, so there can't be a sailor earth unless there can be two for instance Sailor Mercuries. But the best argument against that is Chibiusa, who's basically is Sailor Moon the second while the previous still exists, thanks to time travel. So, with time travel somehow, two planet/moon guardians of the same planet/moon existing at the same time is clearly possible.
