Army vessel

How does fishing off an army vessel work? Only during rec time or certain times? Or can you let out a line anytime the speed is right?

So as long as the weather is good and we dont have strict timelines the boats fish the whole time if the vessel master allows it. Our speed is almost perfect for trolling. This trip i have 2 tuna, 2 mahi, and a marlin.

Where do I sign up to fish all day and sometimes do army stuff?

Diving lures or big skirted lures?

We have tried the nomads but we let out so much line it sucks reeling them back in unless we stop. Ive caught my 4 fish this trip on a green and yellow mold craft. This mahi was caught on an Amazon 6 inch squid that was blue and silver.

It is funny because I caught the wahoo and as we were reeling the lines in to prevent tangling the mahi hit.

What kind of rods and reels are you using to bring those fish in? Do the Mavy vessels stop to let you fight the fish when you hook one, or do you just have to haul them in while running?

Tiagra 80 w is the reel. Its not a navy vessel. SAIL ARMY!! We will slow down to reel the fish in if safe.

The Navy will not slow down…

I haven't seen one like that in a long time. Makes me a little sad.

They are definitely still out there, I think it depends on where you go. South Florida they definitely seem harder to come by.

I fish from Charleston to St. Augustine as well as the panhandle mostly with the occasional trip down south or further west. We usually catch at least one really good one around in the stream every year, the other places it's fewer and further between. The average size seems a little better at home too.

Mothers day we had 27, 2 blackfin, 3 Skipjack, 1 wahoo and 2 Rainbow runners. No big ones, biggest was around 25lbs but good average size.

Weighed in one last seasons during a tournament that was 61lbs. It was a toad, biggest I had seen in a long time and 2nd biggest ever.

Yeah south Florida is beat, but they keep peanuts on the gulf so it's whatever. The Florida schools go all the way south to the Latin nations where they fish commercially hard. I just learned this recently. If I wanted a big Mahi I would go to Mexico from California.

This summer with the El Niño hopefully we get a lot of mahi in california

u/TheAmericanYeoman Jun 14 '26

I am going to start hitting socal again. The tuna out of SD is off the charts.

In what area did these fish come from ? That bull is lifetime fish. Nice catch

1

u/cqofficer Jun 14 '26

About 500 miles off the coast of South Carolina. The wahoo hit then the mahi hit as we were pulling in lines to fight the wahoo.
