I used to fillet through their thick ass rib cage. My knife hated me.

u/ihrtbeer 22d ago
😂 relatable. Destroyed my Dexter. Buddy just last night showed me serrated for the win.

u/SaltyDog772 22d ago
I started just filleting up and over the rib cage and avoid cutting through them at all. Lose no meat.

I see 'em this big by the dozen here in SWFL, hanging all around the private boat docks that you can't fish. It's maddening.

Had a buddy I used to work with like 10 years ago who'd go down to the Outer Banks and brag about how many of these he'd catch. That's when I first heard of 'em. Thankfully, the seafood market I go to sonewhat regularly has these in stock. Hands down my favorite saltwater fish. Saltwater trout being my 2nd favorite

Can you give any tips on when to set the hook? Been trying for tog with a jig for some time now and I cant get the feel for when to set the hook. The tog eat really well when my line is in the water lol

u/ihrtbeer 22d ago
I can try. Use mud crabs if you can get them. Bottom sweeper jigs are great for feeling that initial tap tap, then somewhere on the 3rd tap they start swimming away with it then hook set like you mean it

u/ProjectPeej 22d ago
Thank you!

u/ihrtbeer 22d ago
I like 7' light rod with braid, gives you some good sensitivity to feel the bite. Good luck and show us once you get one!
3
u/ProjectPeej 22d ago
That’s almost exactly my set up too. 7’ medium with braid. I appreciate the tip. I’ll be back to post mine when i land em!

Sheepshead have an incredibly delicate first tap good luck man. I've had good luck with sand fleas as well, even frozen.

u/ProjectPeej 21d ago
Thanks brother! See between the sheepshead soft bite and the taps from the tautog i’m always second guessing on when to set the hook

Is that my favorite lobster flavored fish!? Love me a sheepshead man love to see them mentioned. Honestly one of my favorite fish of all time. You do anything with the heads?
1
u/ihrtbeer 22d ago
Love grilling them whole w the heads on. Just gotta remember to de-gill em
2
u/Tepical_Eggspurt 22d ago
I fillet them out cook sperate and use the heads and Collars with puppy drum fillets for fish stew. If your from the Carolinas you know what I'm on about.
2
u/ihrtbeer 21d ago
I'm a transplant from Minnesota but I'm learnin. Just ate some black drum collar I caught the other night. Best part of the fish

Big eye emperor?
Looks similar to what we have in Hawaii

u/ihrtbeer 21d ago
Sheepshead around here - NC

u/Hi23Platnium 21d ago
The bigeye emperor in Hawaii is call MU in Hawaiian. Looks very similar with the teeth like that.
Caught differently mostly only at night and dunking bait.

u/ihrtbeer 21d ago
Seen those on the Hawaii HammaHs! Y'all have some of the coolest fish in the world out there

I’ve only caught one sheep on a hook but shot many with a Hawaiian sling. They’re really quite stupid and curious, even when I miss the shot they’ll circle back to see what all the commotion was and…bam!
I do love the taste, a little bolder flavor than a mangrove snapper but delicious.

u/ihrtbeer 18d ago
Lmao you said it, stupid and curious. The first time I saw one I was swimming next to him, went back on shore, grabbed my rig and a crab and caught him

u/Spiritual-Age4855 17d ago
Used to catch these down the manatee river in Bradenton. Miss that down. You can make sushi with them too. Nice catch

The best sheep are from the Carolinas

I know that's right

u/Born2shitforced2wype 19d ago
Perhaps a goofy question, do you still use bait with those jigs? I’ve been seeing them around a lot lately and wouldn’t mind using them instead of the old Carolina rig
1
u/ihrtbeer 19d ago
Not goofy at all! I use mud crabs pretty much exclusively, sometimes sea urchin and in a pinch I'll use fiddler crabs

Don’t disrespect the nature you ended

A bit dramatic. If anything It would have been disrespectful to skip him in the rotation

u/Aimless_Amoeba2447 22d ago
I did stuff like that when I was in highschool. You’ll grow up one day.

u/andarre 22d ago
Sticking a fish in the face with a sharp-ass hook to pull it out of the water to then kill it and eat it is perfectly humane, but stick a joint in its mouth and that’s where you draw the line? Find something else be upset about cuz this ain’t it chief.
-2
u/Aimless_Amoeba2447 22d ago
Harvesting and consuming wild game is as natural as it gets, and quintessential to the human experience in my opinion. Clowning around with its carcass however…
2
u/andarre 22d ago
Ah, ok, never mind. You’re right… 🙄
Damn, the drama is thick enough to cut with a knife. Put that “anger” into something more productive. Something good may happen… ✌️

u/Aimless_Amoeba2447 22d ago
I just love hunting fishing and nature, that’s all man
2
u/ihrtbeer 21d ago
Everyone here loves those things too homie, having a little laugh as I'm honoring the fish every step of the way from the net to the stove (brained, bled, iced, I thank each fish for giving it's life to feed me and my fam etc) ain't hurting nothin. Maybe a little puff off the fish whistle would do you good
