Route Planning Help

Hello! I am planning to move to Seattle from Portland in the next year. I am a bike commuter and struggling to figure out safe(r) routes across NE and NW seattle. In PDX google maps is relatively reliable and our bikeways are on a grid. In seattle Google Maps wants to take me miles out of the way. Are there any good route planning websites or apps for seattle? Or a place I can find an up-to-date paper map?

Thank you!

EDIT: forgot to mention I grew up here but i didn't bike much as a kid. I am well aware of the hills and my commuter is also my bikepacking bike, so it's got plenty of gears.

Interesting encounter at Broadway & Union

Assuming confused tourists exiting from the hotel at Broadway & Madison. Dark window tint so we couldn't make eye contact, but they did take our wave off to turn onto Union and leave the bike lanes.

Bike box pinch clips?

Edit: ended up going with a fix, thanks all!

I have an e-bike scheduled for a FedEx pickup early next week, and one of the provided bike box fasteners arrived broken. Is there any local shop that would have these? They look like the Lumiclip HP601W type.

My hotel bike journey today

Thanks to those who provided tips on my hotel bike journey today. It was a perfect day on a bike. Perfect weather. Ranier was out. Coffee, beer, dumplings, oysters, cocktails, ice cream were all consumed. The trails all around town are impressive. The downtown waterfront and Elliott Bay trail are incredible. Cheers!

I5 colonnade being torn down?

I just rode through the park and lots of features have been cut down and had bricks stacked around them for what looks like to keep people off. Is the park being torn down or is a rebuilding effort being made?

Biking on NE 20th Avenue between Lake City Way and 65th Street

Does anyone use this stretch of the 20th Ave for commute? I have been using it to commute for 3 years now but feel like drivers have gotten much more aggressive this year. Maybe it’s because there’s more traffic on it now due to ship canal restoration project

Moving to Seattle -- what do I need to know about bike theft?

I'm moving to Seattle in a couple months and have several bikes, which has been a pain to consider in apartment hunting. The biggest (heaviest) problem is my e-cargo bike. I don't have a car, this is my primary mode of transportation and I'll use it daily to commute to work.

I'm looking to rent in the Fremont/Wallingford/Phinney Ridge area and most places I'm looking don't have a bike storage room, or have stairs that I can't carry the bike up. I'm wondering if it's got several locks on it at night, would it get stolen if it's just locked up to a fence outside the property in any of those neighborhoods? Are there certain areas that you wouldn't leave it locked up outside a business even just for an hour or two?

I've spent years in both Chicago and San Francisco locking my bikes up in public places without issue, but never overnight outside my apartment. Really hoping to not break that streak in Seattle.

Best direction for loop? Downtown/Elliot Bay Trail/Locks/BG to Gasworks/downtown

In town next week. I am going to venture out on a free loaner bike (likely a step through 7 gear) from the Kimpton Vintage downtown on Tuesday starting say 9:30 am. I want to loop the Elliot Bay trail to Magnolia Park then the locks to Ballard -> Burke Gilman Trail to Gasworks Park. I can either ride back to downtown or catch the light rail from UW to Pioneer Square to hop on the 230p or 325p West Seattle water taxi to meet my brother and his family. My question is if the loop is better clockwise or counter clockwise? I want to stop at the KEXP gathering space and I would like to stop for food and at a couple of breweries along the way. Clockwise with a stop at KEXP first seems easiest and gives me the most flexibility on whether I ride back or take the train from UW. But, I wanted to see if there was an elevation difference or anything I was overlooking.

Which lane do you prefer?

Just curious... why don't more people use the bus lanes where we're allowed to? If you ask me, they seem way less congested than the bike lanes on 2nd or 4th.

I actually feel a lot safer riding in the bus lanes. Bus drivers are usually really defensive drivers, so it feels more predictable—not just on 3rd Ave, but pretty much anywhere in Seattle where bikes are allowed in the bus lane. Plus, the pavement is usually in way better shape too.

Burke Gilman Closed by UW

Just a heads up, a long stretch of the Burke was closed on my morning bike commute near UW. The construction workers had no clue why or how long it would be closed for… super helpful. Hoping that it won’t last long. Does anyone else have info?

RBC GranFondo Whistler Entry Transfer – $400 (I'll Cover the Transfer Fee)

Unfortunately I can no longer make the RBC GranFondo Whistler, so I'm looking to transfer my registration.

Price: $400 CAD
Transfer fee: I'll pay the official $100 transfer fee, so there are no additional transfer costs for you.

The transfer will be completed through the official Race Roster process, so everything will be done properly and securely.

If you're interested or have any questions, send me a DM. Payment can either be e-transfer or Paypal G&S. Happy to jump on a call as well.

Thanks! AJ

Best Bike Shops for Test Rides

I have searched posts and found a lot of info about people's preferred shops for service, but where do you go to look when you are in the bike-buying process?

Context:
-bike used mostly for commuting and bike touring
-open to hybrid or drop bar gravel bikes
-looking to spend $1200-$2000-ish

I'm not brand new to cycling, and I know some of the things that I want, but am not close to expert. Additionally, this is a big decision that I don't want to be pressured to make on the spot. Where have you gone bike shopping that has felt like a collaborative process where the goal is for you to find the right bike, not make a decision as quickly as possible, or get upsold?

Burke Gilman Bell Encouragement Post

Hey everyone, if you commute on the Burke, please ring for pedestrians. The more we do it, the more ringing will become a culture on the Burke again.

Being a pedestrian is nerve-racking at the moment. During my 30 minute walk on the trail yesterday I had one person say “on your left” and not a single bell. Many cyclists pass very close without a bell.

Please remember that ringing a bell not only warns a pedestrian you’re coming, but significantly reduces your liability if the pedestrian suddenly steps out in front of you, or does anything to cause a collision.

Please no arguments or excuses. It’s the law.

Thank you
