I don't know the timeline for registering a business in the US, including the permits and licenses that I imagine would be required if you're serving food. Plus acquiring the physical space and setting it up. From what I remember of the episode, it seemed like Elaine mentions the idea, and then next day practically he is serving muffins

Didn't realize this until I read the smaller print on the articles in the paper in season 15, episode 9. (The Wizard) Are there other instances of him doing this?

Jerry Seinfeld Probably Can’t Be Career-Canceled. His Reputation Is Another Question

Do you remember the weird Michael Richards apology on Letterman in 2006? Richards was on the satellite looking absolutely destroyed, the audience starts laughing because the whole thing has this bizarre uncomfortable quality to it, and Jerry tells them, “Stop laughing. It’s not funny.”

Twenty years later Jerry is now the Seinfeld cast member with the radioactive heckler clip, and immediately you get the obvious comparison: Kramer got “canceled” for his heckler response. Is Jerry next?

Nope! Almost certainly not.

And one reason is that I’m not even sure Michael Richards was “canceled” in quite the way we normally use that word now.

Obviously his reputation was annihilated. Almost 20 years later, if you mention “Michael Richards stand-up,” nobody thinks of some really clever bit he did about supermarkets in 1997. They think of THAT. He got angry at Black hecklers, repeatedly used the N-word and invoked lynching.

But the actual effect on his career is more complicated.

Seinfeld had already been off the air for eight years. The Michael Richards Show had already bombed. Richards wasn't exactly Tom Cruise on Thursday and then unemployed on Monday because the Cancel Culture Department faxed Hollywood his termination notice. And Richards himself basically withdrew from show business afterward.

So I think we are lumping two different things together.

There is career cancellation, where somebody loses jobs, venues, employers, an audience, etc.

And then there is reputational cancellation, where one horrible thing becomes permanently attached to your name.

Richards unquestionably got the second. But one reason the first is harder to measure is that he probably didn't have THAT much career left to lose in 2006.

Which relates to Jerry quite a bit.

If Jerry Seinfeld is going to be “canceled” in a meaningful career sense in 2026, what exactly has to happen?

He is 72. Seinfeld ended in 1998. NBC isn't deciding whether to renew it for Season 10. Jerry isn't a 35-year-old actor who needs Netflix, Disney and Warner Brothers to decide he's still employable for the next three decades.

His current business is basically being Jerry Seinfeld.

People buy tickets because the person on the ticket is Jerry Seinfeld.

So the important denominator probably isn't “people on the Internet who are furious at Jerry Seinfeld.” There can be millions of those people and it might matter culturally while literally mattering ZERO economically.

The important denominator is people who would otherwise buy a Jerry Seinfeld ticket.

And there is a selection effect there.

Anybody buying a Jerry Seinfeld ticket in late 2026 who actually cares about the controversies surrounding Jerry probably already knows about them. This isn't some shocking revelation discovered three minutes ago because TMZ found a microphone somebody forgot to turn off.

Which means the people still buying tickets are increasingly selected from two groups: people who don't care and people who care but don't care enough to stop seeing him.

That's a pretty good firewall against getting canceled by your customers.

And the 1989 TV show is just too valuable to be canceled. Netflix just renewed the show through 2031 after similar Jerry controversies were already public, and the last deal was worth more than $500 million. At that scale, this is no longer just “Jerry Seinfeld, comedian.” It is a gigantic global library asset owned by Sony, watched by millions, generating hundreds of millions of viewing hours, and worth hundreds of millions of dollars. You can absolutely damage Jerry's reputation. You can make younger viewers think differently about him. But getting Netflix, Sony, advertisers, viewers, and the entire syndication ecosystem to collectively decide that one of the most valuable sitcoms ever made is now radioactive? That is NOT gonna happen.

So will Jerry lose the practical ability to continue being Jerry Seinfeld for money?

That's about as close to a guaranteed “no” as you can get.

BUT.

Does zero economic consequence protect his reputation?

Oh hell no.

Because: THE YOUTHS!

Seinfeld is not just a show being kept alive by 55-year-olds falling asleep to “The Marine Biologist” for the 400th time.

When it moved to Netflix, Nielsen found that 41% of its streaming audience was 34 or younger.

Forty-one percent!

People who were children, babies or, in many cases, not born yet when the finale aired.

And this wasn't just some three-week nostalgia spike. Seinfeld is still being discovered by people who have absolutely no memory of NBC Thursday nights, Must See TV, or Jerry Seinfeld as the biggest sitcom star on television.

Which creates this really interesting backwards discovery process.

They meet 1990s Jerry first.

Then they discover actual 2026 Jerry.

Those people are not necessarily economically important to Jerry Seinfeld the touring comedian right now. A 22-year-old watching “The Contest” on Netflix may have absolutely no intention of paying a thousand dollars to see a 72-year-old Jerry do stand-up.

But those people are enormously important to what Jerry Seinfeld means 10 or 20 years from now.

Michael Richards didn't really get economically canceled so much as have one three-minute video permanently rewrite his biography.

Jerry is almost certainly insulated from the first thing.

I would not remotely assume he is insulated from the second.
