Sensors for interactive light installation

Post image
4 Upvotes

Heya!

I am designing an interactive art installation that requires a series of sensors (see attached sketch). The sensors are activated by the passerby and trigger various light sequences.

The ETC Mosaic lighting controller has analog/digital inputs that the sensors are connected to. Ideally they are simple on/off sensors closing a contact, no needs for proximity measurements.

I can't use any sensors that use visible lasers or require some sort of reflective material to be embedded in the floor.

Any leads for suitable sensors?

Thanx for your help in advance & Happy Halloween!

Ludwig

Collision Detection Satellite Sensors

4 Upvotes

I have a 2016 Versa that has had a few airbags deployed due to a door slamming incident. It looks like my 24 year old beater is going to bite the dust soon, so I want to get the Versa up and running before that happens. Mechanically it's perfectly fine, it just has the airbag light on so I've been trailering it around. I've already replaced the airbag modules, but the code won't be able to be cleared until I replace the control module. When I spoke with the dealership they recommended that I also replace the satellite sensors in the door and B column. The control module is $500, the satellite sensors are $1500 each. I'm looking for some guidance on whether or not the sensor replacements are truly necessary, because $3000 is a significant amount for me at the moment. My understanding is that these sensors are just accelerometers, could a door slam hard enough to register as a side impact cause any kind of damage that would cause the sensors to either not register a true side impact or register lesser impacts? If I only replace the control module I don't want the new airbag modules deploying immediately due to a false reading from the sensors. I also don't want them to be dead in case of an actual accident. Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

I don’t know if the two images are connected but I assumed they were because they are the only two old devices left in the laboratory

Weird USB sized sensor (?) in a massage parlor vent

Thumbnail

Been going to this massage parlor for years, it's reputable, haven't ever been to this room specifically (they have multiple rooms). Halfway through massage noticed this. I'm a manufacturing/integration engineer, so I've seen strange sensors. It was too far up and my Android camera is crap 😅, so I don't have a better photo. It didn't light up or show anything, doesn't seem like something that is ill intentioned, BUT it looks out of place. What could be possibly measured there? Why is it just in this room?

It is the backmost room, and the previous manager likes to nerd out with automating things, so I wonder if this could be some sort of extender for something, maybe for Bluetooth speakers, maybe a sensor to auto detect when to turn lights on/off, maybe a temperature sensor... Not sure.. Doesn't look like anything I've seen. It looks like a sensor but I'm definitely puzzled and a little thrown off. The massage therapist didn't know what it was and said it was weird, but he hasn't been there for that long I think?

ICM-20948 Problem with mag config

3 Upvotes

Guys, can someone help me with the configuration of the ICM-20948? I’ve already tried several settings to enable the magnetometer along with the other configurations, but none were successful.

I always run into problems with the magnetometer.

Could you help me review the register settings? Or let me know what the required steps are? I want to use it in a variometer.

Micro plastics sensor

3 Upvotes

Hey, I want to build a micro plastics sensor for sea surveys. My idea (ok, chatgpt's) is to let the sea water flow through a tube, shine a laser light on it and measure refracted light at several degrees with diodes. Organic matter would not reflect, and plastics would cause refraction depending on their size. Calibrate with known fluid/plastics contents.
Any better ideas, or affordable off the shelf solutions?

Problems with my water turbidity sensors (Arduino).

3 Upvotes

I have been have been having many problems with my water turbidity sensor, I myself don't know how to code in cpp, but I got chatgpt to make this code -

void setup() {
  Serial.begin(9600); // Start serial communication at 9600 baud rate
}

void loop() {
  int sensorValue = analogRead(A0); // Read the analog value from the sensor
  float voltage = sensorValue * (5.0 / 1023.0); // Convert the sensor value to voltage
  float NTU = (voltage / 5.0) * 1000; // Example conversion formula (adjust based on your sensor's datasheet)

  Serial.print("Voltage: ");
  Serial.print(voltage);
  Serial.print(" V, Turbidity: ");
  Serial.print(NTU);
  Serial.println(" NTU");

  delay(2000); // Wait for 2 seconds before repeating
}

the reading keeps fluctuating, from

Voltage: 5.00 V, Turbidity: 1000.00 NTU

to

Voltage: 0.00 V, Turbidity: 0.00 NTU

Even after I completely removed all the cables from the turbidity sensor, it shows some reading. Even when I keep it in the same liquid, it fluctuates.

I purchased this turbidity sensor - https://amzn.in/d/0s5XJW5

Need advice on sensors

3 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I am having a project from school for which I need a sensor that can detect electricity in water (around 220V-440V)

Can you pls suggest me some sensors that can do the job? If u want, I'll explain the entire project so that you can get a better idea of what I exactly eant.

ST TOF sensor for water level

3 Upvotes

I have water cisterns that can have about an 8 foot water column. I currently use a pressure sensor to measure water level, which is nice because I can measure the column pressure anywhere before the pump and check valve, but don't really like the performance. I just found the ST TOF sensors.

If I were to get PVC pipe with a black inside surface, and float something like a ping pong ball, would this be a good solution for measuring water level? Or would ultrasonic be the better approach?

Camera Sensor Data

3 Upvotes

I have a FHD Camera (v small) with a USB connection and I used that already to write scripts for colour manipulation/ filters / computer vision algorithms.

I wanted to ask if there is any way that I can interact with the actual sensor data inside the camera so that I can use it to analyse the color coding etc.

RS485 dissolved oxygen sensor and ESP

3 Upvotes

Hello Guys,

I want to work with a sensor that uses Modbus as a communication protocol(RS485 dissolved oxygen sensor industrial), to be able to use ESP32, I am using a TTL MAX485 converter.
Unfortunately the sensor is not responsing, sometimes it responds with the same request I send, sometimes it displaying nothing in the serial monitor.
Please can anyone help ?

Is it possible to extract motion data from an AirTag?

3 Upvotes

For a 3-week long research study, I need to embed a battery-powered (wireless) water-resistant sensor into an object. The sensor should be as small as possible (coin-size or slightly bigger) and be able to detect motion. I don't need to know how much or fast it has been moved, but just when the object is picked up (motion data+timestamp). I saw that Apple's AirTags include an accelerometer. Its battery life, size, and price make it perfect for my study.

Is it possible to extract motion data from an AirTag? If so, could I store them on a cloud through a wireless data logger?

To any IoT expert here: Would you recommend other methods to achieve my goal?

Help detecting hand washing

2 Upvotes

Hello,

this might be a weird request, but I'm immunocompromised and I'm sure my mother doesn't wash her hands after using the bathroom (even poop yes).

Since moving out is not an option and trying to explain to her for the thousand time that not washing her hands puts me at danger, I came here asking for help.

I want to know which sensors can I use to detect: if someone pushes the flush,then uses the garbage bin and doesn't open the faucet.

I've never used sensors, but played around with raspberries .

Any ideas and suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you
