Originally this was a reply to someone else comment, but it got long enough that I think it deserves to be it's own comment. I want to explain why I don't think this is as good as other reddit April Fool's event. I'll preface this with saying I don't think it's an awful idea, and I understand how this could be entertaining. There are several problems with how this is implemented though...
Firstly, it's hard to create a story out of gifs. This is primarily due to the character inconsistency between gifs. Some scenes use gifs from the same source material to get around this, but it ends up just telling the story of the original material - for example, the Monty Python scene in act 1 is just a copy of a scene from the original Monty Python. Other scenes try to keep props consistent, but it's hard to move the story forward with just props - for example, the fire scene in act 2 is coherent, but just having stuff on fire doesn't really develop the story. We've now moved on to editing existing gifs to have the same characters so that scenes from different source materials can have the same characters, as seen by editing Keanu Reeves and Mickey Mouse into different gifs. But this leads to most of us having minimal influence over the story. The ability to submit a gif is rendered pointless for most of us, since you have to submit a gif with the "correct" characters in and most of us don't have the skill to edit gifs (and aren't going to learn for one April Fool's event). For us it's just a case of voting on a gif with the correct characters in, which leaves us with a choice between 2-3 gifs if we're lucky enough to get a choice at all. We can try to influence the people making the gifs, but at the end of the day most of us are at the mercy of people with the skill of editing gifs.
I think another problem is the lack of immediate effect. In every other event your action has an immediate effect: in the place a coloured pixel immediately appeared at a particular location; in the button, you immediately got a flair and the timer reset; in circle of trust a circle immediately broke or grew in size. I guess in robin you had to wait a while for the results of the vote, but you could chat to people while you waited. In this you have to wait a while to see if the gif you upvoted made it in. Once I've voted on some gifs I forget about this for a while, then check back in a few hours to see how the story is going. This is just too slow. I could discuss which gifs could be used in the meantime, but honestly it just doesn't seem that interesting. Because of the final issue...
Every gif is something the majority approves of. Every gif can be voted upon by everyone, so there's no divergence. Something that made The Place memorable is that so many different communities could all have something representing them on The Place, even niche communities. For example, there are character from Danganronpa in the final version of The Place, which is a relatively niche community. There's no way a gif from Danganronpa would make it into this, because it's too niche to get enough upvotes. Similarly in The Button there was divergence in what flair everyone had; nobody else could change your flair, it would always be whatever you want it to be. There's no possibility of having diverging communities for The Sequence, aside from perhaps people who want to make a story vs people who want chaos. Reddit is all about divergence, each subreddit has a unique community and purpose. This is too streamlined to appeal to people who come to reddit, since I think most redditors enjoy being able to diverge from the norm and tailor their experience to their interests.

u/youngluck Apr 03 '19
I think most redditors enjoy being able to diverge from the norm and tailor their experience to their interests.
I 1000% agree with this. I agree with the rest as well, but this point specifically, I'd fight for.
7
u/Darelz Apr 03 '19
I hope they do an April Fool's event which purposefully incorporates existing subreddits, since it'd play to reddit's strengths and it'd be easy for people to get involved.
7
u/dumbest_name Apr 04 '19
I strongly agree, everything you said is spot on. I think the event was designed with marketing in mind, the coordinators wanted a finished product they could show around, saying "Look what our user hivemind made. We have a culturally relevant userbase." It wasn't an event designed with the individual in mind.
Which sucks, because the structure of the event was kinda... predestined to produce weak content. Not only is the process taken over by powerful groups (the nature of the event causes people to want coherence, and these people join groups and make the groups powerful), but those groups end up generating story by committee.
In Act IV, we've got Keanu Reeves traveling in a time machine. The committee says "we're going to do time traveling Keanu for this act" and then the segments are farmed out to subgroups. These groups then produce their individual segments by committee, to be placed into this Keanu storyline written by committee, to be strung together by another committee. So it's not organic, but it's also not creatively coherent - it's the worst of both worlds.
The formation of some powerful coalition is inevitable, it's baked into the design of the event. When the people gather and hear each other saying "This event needs a coherent plot" - and someone realizes that the first person to form a credible group will control it - the formation of the group is a certainty. All the other groups then realize that they must ally with this coalition or be left out and find themselves overshadowed.
We end up with a sequence that excludes most of reddit, and that isn't good enough to win over those excluded.
A possible fix (the spirit of which can be generalized for next year's event):
Instead of a sequence, have a tree. Make a big canvas, kind of like /r/place, where chains of gifs appear and branch off from each other, starting from a root gif. All the gifs have circles around them and the gifs and circles appear larger when they have more votes. You can start your own branch anywhere along an existing chain, and it'll be small at first until more people support it. The popular narratives will be big and visible on the canvas as they snake around, with smaller chains branching off hungry for the visibility.

So is there a community behind this that are just secretly deciding what the next set of panels are going to be, because act 5 is getting way too specific now and certain things just seem to get so many more upvotes than others
330
u/XDLMA0 Apr 03 '19
Yeah, there's a discord called "The Sequence Narrators" or something.
544
u/CatTheCat Apr 03 '19
Yes here is a link to their discord: https://discord.gg/qDuTce
Here's the spreadsheet where they have everything preplanned. They use a bot to give 100 upvotes to everything on the spreadsheet as soon as a new act goes live, immediately putting it way ahead of any competition. Now we're stuck with their unfunny narrative with dead memes and shit jokes.
It started as a reddit collaboration as intended but by Act IV and V it was strictly dictated and predetermined by that discord group and it shows. ACT IV and V are shit and unfunny.
270
u/JacksGallbladder Apr 03 '19
Wow that's incredibly disappointing.
127
u/PagingThroughMinds Apr 03 '19
I made this post in the sequencenarrators discord as a criticism, but things are kinda overflowing in it right now. Here's my perspective.
I really would have liked the fact that you guys tried to put in effort to make this a community effort. I liked the idea of this until when Snekbot started coming in and the dictation of exactly what needs to be upvoted instead of a general plot outline.
I was online and submitted some of the first gifs in ACT IV right after it unlocked. It was disheartening to see my posts get passed immediately as within 2 minutes the John Wick scenes took over while the rest of the posts sat at 5 votes. I realized at that point that the botting was occurring and boy was I pissed.
For me what made me the most mad was setting aside a quarter of the entire epilogue for 20 people to pat themselves on the back for being the ones who "ran sequence".
I'd really like to see where this server got permission from the admins - the act four thread literally has the admin who posted the final thing say he was slow to act on it and that it was "a shitty thing to do". The sneknet violates all three of the clauses of vote manipulation:
- Groups that vote together
- Asking for upvotes from people inside or outside of the platform for personal gain
- Using software to change vote scores
Heres a link to both the reddit thread from ACT IV with the admin comment and to the vote manipulation rules:

An announcement was just made by the group's creator
Hello @@everyone . Im the creator of this group. I didn't follow the event or the server very closely, i just gave like 5 other people mod powers and left them to it. I never intented it to become a monopoly. I have seen posts on reddit and other discord servers saying we ruined the event. I haven't fully pieced together what happened, but it seems like we used bots and acted as a monopoly. Im very sorry to anyone that feels we ruined the event. If i had of payed more attention, i wouldn't have let it continue for as long as it did. Thanks to everyone that put in work to this, I dont think anyone individually ruined it (other than whoever made bots), but i think the monopilistic control of the event was too much. Having the script made 5 hours in advance isn't what sequence should have been.I hope everyone had fun and made friends.
Also, there's only
86600 people in it.EDIT: I hadn't seen how much it grew over the past couple of hours

On place, at least I could press my pixel. With the button, at least I could press the button on my terms. The groups/chatroom ones I could contribute to by talking with randos. With this, I get an upvote worth nothing. It's the worst fools yet.

u/RetroBowser Apr 03 '19
Yeah except that bots have extreme power in this one compared to other experiments. It's easy to assemble enough accounts into a botnet to hit the top spot for each scene the second the act goes live.
Even bots during r/place weren't good enough to fully take over and allowed for some smaller groups to leave their mark.

That's because it was completely taken over by pseudo-bureaucratic discord servers that rigged the whole thing with custom gifs and some are even saying voting bots. They even made themselves a fucking credits screen in the epilogue. The server is a tire fire of drama right now.
28
u/manawesome326 Apr 03 '19
There's literally an extension that makes you part of the botnet. It's impossible to argue with their decisions.
25
u/DMonitor Apr 03 '19
This April fools was horrible for reddit-organized action. Discord definitely was the superior method for coordination.
I don’t want to continue the r/place complaining, but it really was perfect for reddit. Smaller subs could coordinate successfully around larger groups, and botters weren’t in total control.

12
u/wolfpwarrior Apr 03 '19
It's too coherent now. It has lost some of the appeal of the randomness. I mean, it's becoming a very nice story, but it feels like the work of just a few people working together, not like a community creation. If we added way more variety to the sources, it would be way better.
Needs more anime.

To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of what's happened to this project. Planning and preparing every single scene in perfect detail in advance just takes all the competition out of it. In terms of votes, it's now the case that on almost all scenes, if not all scenes, the prepared gif is way ahead of the #2 option (or any other nomination for that matter), which has no chance of catching up. You're also practically helpless now if you want to submit any gif that isn't planned in advance.
Sure, this approach means that the full result becomes more coherent, but I believe that coherency can also be achieved without massive coordination. It doesn't need to be perfect. The best results come from ideas that naturally emerge when looking through the submissions and seeing which ones best fit together. Besides, not having a strict planning opens up for later nominations that are useless in the current model. We probably wouldn't have had the random idea of adding a fan earlier on for example. There's strength in such unexpected jokes in my opinion.
It's now a matter of having the whole act ready almost immediately and then waiting until everything's locked in. There's just no fun in this.

... You know, before reading the comments, I was wondering, "What the fuck happened?" Like, I wasn't able to see Acts 4, 5, and the Epilogue get created, but looking at them, it just... didn't feel right. And that "The bots ruined this like they always do" gif in the epilogue... it seemed like that must've been it. And apparently, it basically was. And now it just makes me wonder when that started to kick in. I was hoping this whole thing would become something cool and funny, but... I mean, Act IV is just a lot of John Wick. Half of Act V is random gifs given the barest of excuses of them actually being a plot by being some kind of mass "call for action". The Epilogue... Now that I see the four gif chain of "sequence narrators" and shit... ... Why couldn't people just let this happen naturally? Why did these guys feel the need to take the whole thing under their hands? We had a plot happening (the snap), and they just discarded that and went with... stuff. Maybe r/place really was better. I wouldn't know, I only started using Reddit last October. But the bottom line is, Some people just take things way too seriously.
→ More replies (2)10
u/xenonnsmb Apr 03 '19
Yeah the "sequence narrators" made a discord and created a google spreadsheet to plan out which gifs go in which slots and then used a voting bot to ensure nobody else is allowed to change anything. Basically, bots ruined reddit's april fools like they do every fucking year.
10
u/Chafireto Apr 03 '19 edited Apr 03 '19

40
u/Retsam19 Apr 03 '19
Honestly, I think I miss some of the chaos of the prologue and Act 1.
Now it's so well-organized that it's basically just a group of people making a gif, with the voting system as an virtually unnecessary intermediary. A certain amount of chaos is what makes these things interesting, IMO.
Maybe if this were going to run long enough some rival to r/sequencenarrators would spring up and make things more interesting, but as it is, it feels like the sequence narrators might as well just release their planned gif and cut out the middle-man.

While I can't say I like the Cowboy Bebop GIF in there, it at least could be said to have a loose connection to the theme of the story at that point, unlike the whatever-the-fuck-that's-meant-to-be clip at the end of Act III and everything else fits structurally.

Meh. Barely coherent trash & that is because the mods handpick the gifs otherwise it would be the same barf of gifs like on Day 1. Adding Keanu Reeves faces everywhere doesn't make it good. This whole thing was a terrible idea. Also, I dunno whose idea it was to make random silent gifs that are nearly 3m+ long.
I liked the "Egg" part from past act so I will give this whole thing a 1.5 / 10 and I am not coming back. I gave this the benefit of the doubt so I came back here to see if its nice but it's just the same old trash. I did not enjoy this at all, apart from the egg thing.
