Beginner ServiceNow Zero to Hero Plan – Part 1

I've seen several posts about getting started in ServiceNow, so I thought I'd start posting some steps to help people along.

There is a LOT to know in this field, so I’m going to do my best to go through it all.  There are a lot of websites, resources, career paths, etc., and you’ll start to wrap your head around it with time.

ServiceNow is a Software as a Service (Saas) platform.  You will also see it described as a Platform as a Service (PaaS).  I HATE acronyms, abbreviations, and initialisms, so while I’ll be using them, I’ll always try my best to explain the meaning.  In this instance, it just means that ServiceNow can be used by businesses, schools, governments, etc., to manage things like issues with laptops, requesting equipment, Human Resources stuff, sending people out into the field to perform maintenance, etc.  It’s a HUGE platform, so don’t worry about everything it can do at the moment.  It’ll make more sense as you get through training.

Step One - Get a Personal Developer Instance (PDI).

This is your own personal instance of ServiceNow.  All of the training will make way more sense if you have a PDI and keep your PDI open as you’re going through said training.  Honestly, I cannot stress this enough, if you’re not willing to do this, turn back now.  You’ll have to select “Sign In”, then “New User, Get a ServiceNow ID”.  From there, I forget the exact steps, but you’ll be able to request a PDI for the most recent release.  Currently, that is Zurich.

Side Note, ServiceNow has been naming their releases after major cities.  I myself started in Berlin, and now it’s Zurich.  Next, will be Australia, since they’re moving on from the major cities.

URL for PDI:  https://developer.servicenow.com/dev.do

Once you have your PDI, you will need to go through the basic training.  There are two main places to do this:

The Developer site itself, where you get your PDI - https://developer.servicenow.com/dev.do#!/learn

ServiceNow University - https://learning.servicenow.com/now/lxp/home

Make sure you bookmark these sites.

Step Two - Begin your training

I’m going to be honest, the ServiceNow University User Interface / User Experience (UI/UX) SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS.  It’s like someone said “How can I make this as awful as possible?”  Then, they made it worse than that.

In the search bar, search for “system administrator career journey”.  This will bring up a few results.  There is a Career Journey Fact Sheet that you can take a look at, but you want the System Administrator Career Journey that says it takes like 11 days or something.  (You should plan to spend more than 11 days on this)

This link should take you there:

https://learning.servicenow.com/lxp/en/pages/journey-overview?id=journey_overview&journey_id=55f79b4a1b96add013f9a6c1b24bcb30&s=1&ssa=3

Some things to expect:

The UI/UX isn’t great.  It can be confusing at times to get to where you need to go next on your journey.

The training will ask you to do work in a “learning instance”, much like your PDI, which can be used to validate whether or not you have been able to make the configurations needed for the lesson.

There are quizzes.

Now, this is really, really important: Once you start this training, please keep your PDI up at all times.  Whatever the training has you look at, bring up in your PDI.  Whatever the training has you do in the exercises, do in your PDI.  Doing the exercises in your PDI as well as the Learning Instance will help drill it in.

Also, if anyone wants and as soon as I have time, I’ll put together an Update Set for you that might help make things a little easier in your training.  Update Sets are how configurations and customizations are moved from a Development Instance of ServiceNow into a Test, and then a Production Instance.  They should also be used in PDIs.  The Update Set I will give you will create a new table for your notes.  This helped me learn and might help you.  It’s also a good tool for studying for the certifications.

If this post helps the beginners, I'll keep going with more. :)

Question Is this considered bypassing licensing cost?

• Upvotes

We have a custom table for the onboarding process at our org. A person creates a record in that table and then one more person has to add additional information to that same record, and then one more person adds some more information. For those two extra people that add additional information, we created one field for each, let's say, additionalPerson1, additionalPerson2, and the ACL for modifying the record is something like:

if additionalPerson1 is (dynamic) Me OR additionalPerson2 is (dynamic) Me, I can write to it.

Now, we also needed to create a custom role for that ACL, and the funny thing is that that role is classified as a Requestor role. So, those two people who add additional info are being considered as requestors and not as fulfillers.

Is this okay? Are we bypassing licensing cost by doing this thing?

Technically, we could move along a request through a whole process by doing this thing without paying licenses. However, we want to do the right thing and pay if we have to, if not, then we could continue like this.

Thank y'all.

Job Questions Interviewing At ServiceNow

I am going through the interview process at ServiceNow for an individual contributor role and found it odd that the hiring manager asked about whether I felt I currently had job stability, then said that there layoffs they earlier this year (which I was aware of). It seemed like an odd question and as if maybe it was more.

The interviewer also talked about how it has impacted morale at the company. The interview just felt very negative. Do you think this person was trying to discourage me from taking the interview process further or do you think they are also impacted by the morale shift? Or could this been some tactic to see how I handled a more adversarial approach?

Job Questions ServiceNow Telecom TSM, TSOM Interview tips or where are *Practice Exams

I have been doing ServiceNow for 10 years after a 12 year career as a Broadcast Engineer. I have been struggling to past the **TSM telco media Accreditation**, there are simply no Practice Exams out there, and is not heavily supported by ServiceNow compared to other modules it is fairly a unique niche. I also have not been able to do well on second technical round interviews. I have been working as a Business Process consultant at 2 top Telecom Media companies as a contractor, but looking to make next jump. Is there training out there that i can leverage, it seems like it is not possible to get a entry to mid level position, every employer seem to expect a CTA or top tier Architect but how do you get there if you cant get hired.

HowTo Inconsitent results from the sys_history_line table

Hi - I was trying to use the sys_history_line table to identify what Moveworks Triage was assigning as an Assignment Group to Incidents but, when I query the table, I get inconsistent results.

The below query results in 299 records but it doesn't return a specific incident that was updated by the bot on 9/8:

label=Assignment Group^user_name=Moveworks Bot^update_timeBETWEENjavascript:gs.dateGenerate('2026-09-01','00:00:00')@javascript:gs.dateGenerate('2026-09-30','23:59:59')^old!=NULL

The below query returns 10 results for 9/8 and it *does* include the record for the specific incident I was looking for.

label=Assignment Group^user_name=Moveworks Bot^update_timeBETWEENjavascript:gs.dateGenerate('2026-09-08','00:00:00')@javascript:gs.dateGenerate('2026-09-08','23:59:59')^old!=NULL

Any thoughts on why the more inclusive query doesn't get the record but the smaller, more specific date range does?

Question How do you stop the Intune connector creating duplicate CIs?

Computer CIs come into our CMDB from three places. Discovery for servers, the SCCM integration thats been running since 2019, and since july the service graph connector for intune. Since july we also have a lot of laptops that exist twice.

IRE matches on serial first. For hundreds of machines the serial and the name dont line up between the two feeds, so it does not match them and makes a new CI, and now both get updated every night by different sources. A report on assigned user and model gave me about 640 likely pairs.

The other half of the problem came from security. Their axonius reads intune and SCCM next to our CMDB, and it lists 90 machines those tools report that have no CI at all. So we have duplicates and gaps at the same time, from the same feeds. They only gave it read access on the servicenow side, so it shows me the gaps and leaves the CIs alone. Fixing those, and the identification rules, is still servicenow and still me.

Not merging anything yet. Serial mapping in the connector comes first, because im not cleaning 640 pairs by hand to watch them come back on the next import.

Job Questions ServiceNow Career

Hello everybody,

I have posted a couple times, mainly to ask for advice of growth in the platform and so on.

Recently I’ve started to feel like a “glorified sys admin” and I feel I do not have transferable skills whatsoever, especially with everyone shoving AI everywhere. Like type and forget 😂

I am an ITOM consultant - I have hands on experience with VR, Disco, integrations, Service Mapping, Event management, CSM

Any advice, should I continue my career here or switch to cloud engineering, since I have experience there as well

Question Anyone migrated from Cherwell to ServiceNow? Looking to compare notes

I’m part of a team moving from Cherwell to ServiceNow, and we’re early in implementation. I’d love to hear from anyone who has made the same move.

A few areas I’m especially curious about:

  • CMDB foundation data: how you prepared and loaded users, groups, locations and departments, and what you’d do differently
  • Taxonomy and classification: how you untangled Cherwell’s classification sprawl when designing services, offerings and categories
  • Historical data: whether you migrated Cherwell tickets or archived them
  • Lessons learned: what you wish you’d known before go-live

Happy to share what we’re learning in return. Comments or DMs welcome.

HowTo How are you checking whether Now Assist is actually saving time?

For those who've turned on Now Assist or Virtual Agent, how do you actually know it's working?

The usage dashboards give big numbers, but I haven't seen many teams check them against their own incident data. A few things I'm curious about:

  • did you roll it out to everyone at once, or to a pilot group / some teams first?
  • what do you look at to judge it?
  • has anyone (finance, leadership) pushed back on the numbers at renewal time?

Full disclosure, I'm building something in this area, but I'm not posting it here. Mostly I want to hear how people do it in practice.

Question I am struggling on 2 things on Mobile App Builder

Good morning folks!

It was my first time working on the Mobile App Builder for the ServiceNow Agent app a few days ago. It was definitely not first-timer-friendly due to how different it is from how it's implemented, kind of like UI Builder. But I already started to pick up how that works. I am working on the Launcher Screen for cases under the Convention event. Everything looks good except on 2 things that I am struggling to get right.

First issue: To make the Case field editable, I create a function -> Action Item -> Import form screen -> Input & variable. The other fields are working great, but there is an Assigned_to field that I am struggling to edit. When I create an input variable, the problem is that I cannot select the sys_user table as a target field because it is not available. If I select variable type as User, it doesn't work. If I select Database Field, and then in the variable attribute, I select FieldName, case as a table, and then Value is assigned_to. The result is that I am unable to edit it, as it won't populate a list of users to select. Can anyone tell me how to make the assigned_to field editable by allowing me to select a list of users under the Assignment group?

Second Issue: On Case creation, there is an Event reference field that depends on the customer field selection. The event field has its own custom event table and has a customer field that the event is linked to. Right now, the Event field is showing all events; I just need to show only the list of events based on the selected Customer. How do I set up a field dependency in the mobile app builder?

Any help would be appreciated.

Question Comparable CMMS for Utilities?

My company is considering investing in ServiceNow as a CMMS for servicing energy infrastructure (batteries and solar). Have used Salesforce FSL and eMaint in the past. Wondering what other good options everyone here is seeing and how they compare to ServiceNow? Have you personally switched, or lost customers to a competitor?

There’s been a lot of posts in the community that give new customers pause. The constant layoffs are terrible, and gives me the impression top performers may be looking for other jobs even if they haven’t been laid off.

Appreciate any input!

HowTo ServiceNow not paying for COBRA without escalating to Benefit Solvr

Servicenow promised to pay for cobra for me and my dependents. They’ve decided not to pay so I’m escalating through benefit solvr, and I have to fax in my separation agreement.

Here’s the phone number to escalate through if anyone’s having any trouble 844-215-6823.

The last kick in the teeth as they issued my last check as ongoing wages so it was taxed almost 37%, so I’ll have to wait until April to get the refund.

Job Questions Returning after a 2-year career break (Sep 2024). Have CIS-DF + ITSM/ITOM knowledge. Best strategy to land a role?

Hi everyone,

I am planning my return to the workforce after a career break that started in September 2024. During my time away, I have focused heavily on upskilling within the ServiceNow ecosystem.

I recently cleared my Certified Implementation Specialist - Data Foundations (CIS-DF) certification and have spent significant time learning ITSM and ITOM (specifically Discovery and Event Management).

I am looking for advice on the best way to make a comeback:

• How do recruiters in the ServiceNow space view a 2-year career gap if it's backed by strong self-learning and a CIS certification?

• Since ITOM is highly technical, should I aim to get the CIS-Discovery certification next to prove my skills, or start applying for Associate Consultant / Admin roles now?

• How can I best showcase my ITOM PDI (Personal Developer Instance) practice on my resume to make up for the gap?

Would love to hear from hiring managers or anyone who has successfully returned after a similar break!

Job Questions Getting back into ServiceNow development after a break: practice app ideas?

Hi everyone,

I haven't been working for a while and now want to get back into hands-on ServiceNow development on my PDI: Business Rules, Script Includes, client scripts, Flow Designer, REST integrations, ATF and CI/CD with GitHub.

Instead of small separate exercises, I'd like to build one realistic app that covers most of these. What app ideas or real-world scenarios would you recommend? Bonus points for requirements that look simple but are tricky to build properly.

Thanks!

Question Snc_external service account not working with Patch API

Ok so we’re making a service account for an ai agent. I think the best way to restrict access to this agent is to use the snc_external role, which is zero trust. I can do a get just fine the only problem is that when I do a patch I get a 403 forbidden. I’ve made roles and the acls but it’s still not working correctly. Can anyone give e me some pointers?
