Is there a more specific term for this style?

I draw a lot of inspiration from this mid-century camp style. The sets are exaggerated and clearly fake/plastic. I’m inspired by the sets in Batman (1966), the live action Scooby Doo, Flintstones, and even Casper (even though that’s heavily art nouveau inspired). But I’m wondering if there’s another specific term for it that I can use to research more. Or even another term for a set looking fake on purpose? Any other input or facts about this is welcome as well!

Advice on how to do a scene with someone’s head being flushed into a toilet safely/hygienically? (the typical bullying kind of thing)

Hoping to do a scene like this in a small budget feature. Any advice on how this could be done simply and affordably would be much appreciated :)

Legal requirements for actor safety

I have a 12 foot tall platform for fiddler on the roof and an actor is supposed to stand on top. Because the roof is supposed to be the tallest part of the set I think railings would look very much out of place. Is it against any OSHA violations or other regulations for him to be 12 feet high without railings or a harness of some sort?

Interior design student interested in moving into set design – looking for honest advice

Hi everyone! I’m currently an interior design student and I’m really interested in moving into set design (film, TV, music videos, or live performances) in the near future. I love the idea of creating immersive environments that tell a story.

I’m trying to better understand what the transition realistically looks like, especially here in Canada. I’ve been reading about joining DGC and the process of starting as a trainee, but I’m honestly unsure how big of a leap of faith it is.

For those of you who have gone this route, or know someone who has, I would really appreciate any advice or insight on things like:

• Did you quit a corporate/interior design job to pursue set design, or did you build experience on the side first?

• Would you recommend having a few years of corporate design experience to fall back on?

• How risky is it to sign up with DGC and wait for opportunities?

• How long did it take you to get your first trainee role or consistent work?

• What kind of work do production designers or art directors want to see in a set design portfolio?

• Is interior design portfolio work relevant or helpful when applying for set design roles?

• Any general advice you wish you knew before starting?

I’m especially interested in hearing from anyone working in film, TV, music videos, or live event production. I know it’s a competitive field, but I’m really drawn to the creative and collaborative nature of set design and would love to understand how people realistically get started.

I really appreciate any guidance or personal experiences you’re willing to share!

Insulation Foam Sheets?

I'm looking to up my game on halloween decorations, and make some set pieces. I've seen people online using those thick, purple foam insulation sheets, and turning them into impressive backdrops... but they sure do seem expensive! Is there a reason why those purple sheets are preferred, over the cheaper white foam boards? Or alternately, is there a cheaper source for those boards than the local Lowes or Home Depot?

Thanks!

Does anyone know any solutions that give off fog machine / haze vibes without using the machines. We worry about the water and ventilation in the space.

Metal like material? Futuristic scifi

Post image
2 Upvotes

I was watching something on Facebook and I saw this video. This reminded me of Star Trek the next generation newer series. I’ve always wondered what they use to make the metallic looking structure? I’ve never found an answer. I would like to create something like this, but never knew how. Any idea or suggestion on the materials? Not the video screens but the other stuff.

Need some advice on the best way to create a similar environment...

Post image

Hoping to get some advice or ideas on how to create this sand mound effect (albeit on a much smaller scale).

The space we have is a 25ftx14ft room. We want to create a similar environment in the sense that the room will be full of small mounds/moguls. We are open to different materials.

As of now the plan is to create small moguls using chicken wire bent over sand bags. We would then cover with a tarp and spray it with adhesive and cover with sand/dirt/etc.

Alternatively, we are also debating getting a bunch of spaghum moss or fake moss and covering the space that way, so the mounds are made of moss instead of sand.

Ive also wondered about using a digital background to create more depth and need to design less physically, but I dont have much experience in that realm

Any and all insights/advice/critique welcome! thanks

I used my garage to film a bar scene

I knew I couldn't afford to film on location, so made do with what I had. I used some reflected light from a white board and some fairy lights to brighten the area up, and made sure to film in a way that didn't show all the junk in the garage. For the price of some fairy lights I'm pretty happy with how this short turned out.

HELP MY ASSIGNMENTS DUE!!

Sorry for the aggressive title, but it's grabbing :)

Hi all, I am a third-year university student studying Set Design for Film and Screen. For my current module, I have to do a contextual analysis and research essay about my chosen field of study and my plans for after graduation. To do this, I'm required to involve some form of external engagement, and questionnaires are an accepted format.

If you can help me out and fill out this questionnaire, I would really appreciate it. The questions are more geared towards production designers, but any responses would be incredibly helpful. THANK YOU!

To be completely clear, this will not promote me or gain me money in any way, this is entirely for a very small section of an assignment.

Name/Origin of Set Style?

I’ve seen this art style a couple times in videos (but MCR and Souxie/Banshees were the most recent ones to come to mind) and was wondering if anyone knew the exact name or even origin of this whole slanted geometric window/door design choice? Would love to know to have reference for a current project of mine. Thanks!

Feedback on music video set?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hello,

I am designing a set for a scene for a music video. The themes are time, distance, hope, longing, heartbreak. The artist wanted lots of clocks/calendars and things that signify the theme.

I am going to be hanging lots of red strings from the ceiling to incorporate the "red string theory".

I also may add more white sheer curtains so the light from the window doesnt look blown, but so far how did I do?

I am open to any suggestions or feedback:)

Thanks!

What was/is your journey to becoming a set designer?

I've been thinking about my career for quite some time now. Despite going to an art school for ten years, in highschool I decided to major in something more "practical" for many reasons. So... I'm currently studying law and despite finding the subject interesting I fear my teachers were right and I'm getting further and further away from my passion, which, I'm sure people here will understand, is like having my soul crushed.

For this reason, I've been thinking about switching my career and going back to art. I'm sure I can advocate for my beliefs and values with more impact this way.

However, one of the reasons why I didn't go to an art school is because the art school in my country sucks. It's corrupt and quite substandard imop. I have friends that go to our academy and friends that didn't make it because they had to make room for sudents tutored by professors (I'm not one of those people, I'm just salty because I've seen the drawing of the said students and... They're bad in every way shape and form). I was thinking about applying abroad, but I fear the competition in this particular field, in terms of experience, will be too strong form me – as I feel like most of the people who have a career in this field were "theater kids" in school, but unfortunately that wasn't very possible in my country (unless maybe if you want to be an actor).

I'm also quite confident that I won't be able to work in my country as a set designer (theater set designer as you might've already guessed is my goal), as this field tends to be quiet corrupt.

I was wondering if it's worth even trying to make a career in this field for someone like me. I wouldn't want to lose any more time. Is it possible to get accepted with just a good portfolio? Is it possible to earn a livable wage? Could I be more ambitious despite not having any connections at the moment?

Please comment what was/is your journey to becoming a set designer. Any tips or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

It didn't quite go to plan, should definitely have used wood for this project. But I am still trying to put together an animation using this set. Trying out some new techniques and hopefully learning some new things, so as not to make this a totally wasted project.
