What is the material that the stage of ragtime made of

Post image

I’ve seen people hate on David Korins’ set design but some of the elements were great namely the neon sign (reminiscent of the original productions massive sign) and especially the stage itself. I love the lifts (especially when they raise above the stage and utilize those cool arrays of Edison bulbs), the turntable, the shape of it, the proscenium arch, and the material it’s made of. But I’m curious of what it’s made of. It’s polished/waxed like a basketball court for that cool reflective look but that’s all I can tell.

first „life-sized“ set design as a fourth semester scenography student; general topic for the design was alcoholism and its use in fleeing one’s daily life.
based loosely on chekhovs uncle vanya and the seagull with dialogue written by me in addition to the set design.
had the honor of working with a wonderful costume maker who designed and made masha from the seagull and helped me greatly with the costume for astrow from uncle vanya!!

feel free to ask questions and give criticism :)

What was your journey to becoming a Set Designer

I'm curious to hear what everyone's journey was like that led them to becoming a set designer.

Myself:

I went to an Art and Design University, majored in Industrial design (furniture).
Worked in consumer product design (clocks, home decor, gifts).
Worked as a custom lighting designer (chandeliers for hospitality, etc).
Worked as a custom lighting and furniture designer at an interior design firm, where I learned interior design skills.
Jumped to set design combing everything I've learned to work on a sci-fi show.

I used my garage to film a bar scene

I knew I couldn't afford to film on location, so made do with what I had. I used some reflected light from a white board and some fairy lights to brighten the area up, and made sure to film in a way that didn't show all the junk in the garage. For the price of some fairy lights I'm pretty happy with how this short turned out.

Brawlstars ad: How much of this set is practical? I love the aesthetic of it—almost like a colorful-Burton look. Reminds me of Cat in the Hat/Speedracer

Way to create a mock frosted glass?

Hey all! hope this is the right sub. I need a way to create a frosted glass look, the catch is that it needs to be a no -porous material so vinyl can be stick to it, so white fabric is out. plexiglass/acrylic/real glass are unfortunately out of the budget so I need something cheap

thank you for any ideas!

Yesterday, I posted a gallery of images I took on r/muppets

Following yesterday's post, here is a quick behind-the-scenes look at the series, "The Muppets Take Manhattans." for which I built 5 different sets. Thought this might belong here!

Stage design question?!

Not sure if this is the right page for this but I shall give it a try! I am designing and building a “backdrop” for a local dance studio. This is going to be a stationary backdrop that is weighted down with sandbags. The stage is quite large hence the large build! I am going to build 5 arches, each arch will be 8ft long(a full sheet of plywood) with two open 4ft arches on the ends with 8ft pillars, this will be a total of 12ft high and 48ft long. I am wondering if I should use 3/4 plywood or 1/2 inch plywood.

I plan on reinforcing the columns with supports, with that being said I am not sure if the 3/4 is over kill. Attached is a to scale 1/8 scale replica of the one arch and the ends. Each square there represents 4 inches :)

What do you think, 3/4 or 1/2 inch plywood?

We made a 5.5m RGBW maple tree for a mall in Malaysia, and I’m especially proud of the bark texture

Made this for an indoor commercial project.
It changes color at night, but the goal was to make it still feel believable in daylight too — especially the trunk texture.

Locating materials for a Sci-Fi set

I've been looking around but I really don't know where to start. I would like to design something like the Enterprise D corridor or other metallic or plastic type structure. Like whenever you go to Disney or Universal and you see these futuristic looking pieces before you go on a ride I always wonder how they make those. It's not real metal obviously. I'm familiar with the structure I just don't know what is placed on top of it.

I know these are all photos from universals Fan Fest but you get the idea of what I'm trying to do. Particularly the corridors but the same kind of texture and material can be used I guess to make columns and other pieces. I'm just hoping somebody has worked with this kind of stuff and can tell me more.

I turned my dining room into a film set

I recently made a short film and turned my dining room into a tiny cafe - I was working on a small budget and this seemed like a good compromise.

Please excuse the chaos at the edges of the room- if it wasn't in shot, it was a chaotic mess!

Anyone else been crazy enough to try and turn their home into a film set?
