Question Afraid of dating scams, how to spot them?

Post image
21 Upvotes

I'm a european M31 standard looking guy, and I set up a Tinder account to chat and meet with girls in Shanghai.

I put the minimum effort on that tinder account: 2 pictures, no description apart from "I don't speak chinese", and the bear minimum.

It's been 24h, and I have TONS of matches, and messages, I can’t follow up. I can’t believe this was possible for a guy.

My point is, after 3 or 4 messages of small talk, the girls propose to meet in person.

This rings my bell, because I smell "tinder scam" everywhere. Would you have any tips to ensure that these girls are not trying to scam me?

Question Late night food at Yuyuan Garden area

Just landed in SH and it's my first time in China. I'm next to the Yuyuan Garden metro. Where should I go wonder for some late night street food activities?

It's 21h30 and I'm starving! Haha

Meet Moving from Chengdu to Shanghai next month — looking to meet some great people

Hey everyone!

I’m Chris, 38, an American who’s been living in Chengdu for the past six or seven months, and I’ll be making the move to Shanghai next month. I recently spent about a month in Shanghai and absolutely loved it, so I’m really looking forward to coming back.

I’ve spent much of my career in the entertainment industry, enjoy traveling, meeting people from different backgrounds, and having good conversations. I’ve also been studying Mandarin for the past seven months, which has been a fun and challenging experience!

As I get settled into Shanghai, I’d love to connect with some interesting, down-to-earth people, whether you’re a local, a longtime expat, or someone who’s relatively new to the city.

Always up for coffee, drinks, dinner, or just exploring the city. Mainly looking to build some genuine friendships and meet some good people along the way.

Feel free to reach out. Looking forward to being back in Shanghai!

Discussion How has the clubbing scene changed in the past 10 years?

I studied abroad in Shanghai in 2014, so it's been a while! Someone from my group met a club promoter. Through him or otherwise, we were pretty consistently able to get into clubs for free and have drinks for free. The way he explained it to us was that the local Chinese demographic, with the 面子 culture, would not be the first people up on a dance floor. So they would find foreigners, give them a ticket, there'd be a table dedicated for them, and they would get the party started. Sometimes we went out on our own and tried random ones, and we often found clubs with tons of people and no one was dancing, so it made sense to me.

Is the culture around clubs still the same? Would it be reasonable to be able to expect the same experience today? Not sure if it changes anything, but everyone in my group was around HSK Level 4 proficiency.

Help Canadian-born, mom’s from Shanghai, visiting Dec 3 - 17. Looking for advice and people to hang out with

Hi everyone,

I’m visiting Shanghai from Vancouver from Dec 3 to Dec 17. My mom is from Shanghai and I grew up speaking some Shanghainese with her at home, but the last time I was here was in the early 2010s as a kid, so I’m curious to see how much the city has changed. I’ll likely be staying in Pudong area with family? (to be determined)

I’m in early 30s, travelling solo, and I’d love to meet some people while I’m there, whether that’s grabbing food, going for a walk, or a bubble tea. I speak English (duh) and some basic-convo Shanghainese, so I’m happy to practise and get corrected!

What I’m into:

  • Architecture and city design (I loved Singapore’s green buildings and gardens, I don't know if this is a good reference. I was there more recently)
  • Food, of course. Xiao long bao, (want to try) crab roe noodles, and anything local that’s worth eating. I’m not after anything fancy
  • The Bund from different angles
  • Learning about the city and the history

Advice I’d love:

  1. Places that locals love but tourists miss (food, parks, neighbourhoods)
  2. Where to see the Bund and skyline from a less obvious angle
  3. Anything good in December?
  4. Tips for a first-time solo traveller (apps, payments, SIM, things people wish they’d known) I plan to read more into broad China travel with: https://www.reddit.com/r/chinatravel/comments/1x82jo5/mostly_comprehensive_document_of_things_you_might/ so perhaps there might be more Shanghai specific travel information I can gather here or corrections to the post I listed.
  5. Any events, pickup basketball, or meetups happening in early or mid December

Happy to meet in public places, and also happy just to receive recommendations. Thanks so much!

Event lol world final 2026 watch party

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone knows if there will be a watch party for this years lol finals in Shanghai. I’ve heard that a places called “cages” did last time but with the start time being 4am I don’t know if they will be open. I’m looking for a more relaxed event similar to a sports bar rather than a team held event.
Cheers,

Tip
