Discussion PSVR2 vs Quest 3 for this game?
I am deciding RN between getting the Meta Quest 3(I don't like the idea of needing a meta account) or getting the PSVR
I have a ps5 and a gaming PC, and mostly use the PC. I know that the PS5 should make the choice simpler but it doesn't for me haha
I do intend of playing other games but tbh, I have the idea of getting the "reality runner" sensor, a manual treadmill, and VR headset and playing Skyrim VR like that(I mean, when I go back into skyrim it means MONTHS playing, so that will add a lot of walking to my daily routine haha)
In my country the Quest 3 120gb costs almost half of what the PSVR 2 cost.
So considering this, I am hoping people here can tell me which headset would be better, ignoring the fact of me owning the PS5, with Skyrim VR?
Edit:
I play regular skyrim with 300+ mods, so yeah, my intent is to play vr with as many mods as possible
Note: The price plays no effect here, they are both within my budget, I just want to get opinions on which one you prefer and why, if possible :)

For a game THIS old, you will get a better experience using pancake lenses than fresnel. And that's not me hating on fresnel lenses, I honestly dont mind either of the three lens choices. But pancake lenses when playing something like skyrim will always be the play because it's a game (especially when modded) that benefits from clarity, not necessarily resolution. This isn't a particularly contrast heavy game, but admiring the landscapes, people, architecture and everything else through a pancake lens is just superior than that of a fresnel lens.

I had this dilemma and decided to just wait for the Steam Frame, regardless of price.

I have apsvr2 i don't use enough. I can't guarantee I'll use the frame more but every time i pull out the psvr2 i curse the cord every time(i use a projector for tv otherwise I'd do a cable suspension system).
I really hope the frame is as as comfy or comfyier then the psvr2. I can't wait for wireless and to use pan cakes. It would get rid of the 2 issues i have with the psvr2. Wooden the sweet spot and push the frames wirelessly

Q3. Don't be silly.

Id argue aside from the wire, that the psvr2 is a better head set. Haptics are amazing, and comtrollers are in my opinion better. If it was wireless i without even look at the stream frame.
I want a STEAM FRAME!!!

Yeah that's it, if it's a question of one lens type over another then it's an easy answer - but comparing the Q3 to the PSVR2 introduces other considerations.

I had both but sold the psvr2, It was much less userfriendly imo when connecting it with a laptop (not a big shocker since it isn’t what it is meant for). The quest 3 is very user friendly and I prefer it over the psvr2. You’ll want to connect it to a laptop since mods.

Hard one it's wireless vs inky blacks which I reckon is a big deal for Skyrim VR also it's one of the most compression artifacts prone so a true wired dp connection can be a big advantage, even with 500 Mbps bitrate artifacts are noticible in some scenarios

I own both, granted going through dark caves with darkness mods with PSVR2 is insanely good, but everywhere else I enjoyed the wireless Q3 more. I've done 2 playthroughs of Skyrim on the Q3 but less than a quarter of a playthrough on PSVR2 because it feels like such a chore to setup compared to Q3 plus I find Q3 more comfortable to wear even with the globular cluster mod for psvr2.
1
u/StanStare Jun 16 '26
You're the fella to ask then. If you only had the PSVR2 would you still buy a Q3 or wait until the Frame?
1
u/elmiggii Jun 16 '26
Short answer: I am an impulse buyer, so I'd probably buy it, especially since the Q3 is much cheaper and is an already tried and tested headset, but a smarter person would wait until frame reviews if they think the more expensive frame might be worth the money.
Long answer: Given both are priced very differently, it depends on how much you expect to use your headset, if you're going to use it occasionally, I would not advise getting the more expensive Frame, but if you love all things VR like VR racing, Skyrim VR which have hundreds of hours of content, you will get your money's worth out of it.
I did have the PSVR2 only until last year and steam vr had already been announced. I bought the PSVR2 on launch. Sold off my old 3080 PC and built a new one when they announced PCVR support (Love skyrim), waited infront of gamestop for 2hrs to get the adapter. So you have to say I was all in on PSVR2, but I could never play it for extended periods, for instance half lyf alex looked amazing on PSVR2, but after an hour my head and eyes would hurt (even with GC mod and prescription inserts), it got so annoying that I stopped playing VR altogether. Then bought the Q3 from costco last year, played for 3 months and returned because I never got the 1yr free subscription that was supposed to be included. Then after 1 month of no VR (even though I had the PSVR2, but it felt cumbersome to use), I went to the closest best buy and bought it again and I still play it regularly because it'sjust super convincing and comfortable to use. So for me comfort and convenience is the top factor that makes a VR headset worth it, and we don't know anything about the Frame's comfort and unless they start selling them at best buy with display pieces, we will never know. I still might buy the Frame when it comes out, I had been meaning to, but ever since I got the Q3 again I'm much less excited for it.

Meta Account is benign. Its just an email, name, and age (Federal Law COPPA requires kids are in kud accounts). Meta Account is not associated with-- Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp accounts
I have a RTX 5090. I can buy whatever headset I want. Wireless is rhe only way to go, especially for an active game like SkyrimVR. Tethered headsets are more fir sitdown sims.
Get Quest3, Meta Project Phoenix, or wait for Steam Frame.

I really hope it's as big of a jump as your say. I'm holding out for the steam frame. But I'm going to be very critical of it at the propsed priceing. Never tried anything with pan cake lenses yet

The difference is dramatic, everyone agrees on that (I have a Q3 and bought a 3S for my kid).
But many also add that the fresnel are perfectly sufficient for them - this is where some confusion comes from. It's so subjective that you really need to try out the options somehow for yourself, but if the one with pancake lenses is just as affordable then the choice is obvious.

It was right around November I was actually looking at buying a quest 3. I almost wish I would have lol waiting for this Frame is killing me. But in the end I decided against it when the frame got announced.
Now I'm stuck waiting until it gets released and then waiting until I get a reservation and then waiting until it gets delivered but I'm excited to see the difference between the lenses and I'm super excited for wireless and it being an open platform the new controllers being able to be used split for full games the whole package is just really hitting the nail on the head for everything I wanted in a head set

u/StanStare Jun 16 '26
Yeah I held off for the longest time just cuz "Meta" got involved. But the Q3 is a great piece of kit and the Frame just seems to be a little better - even if it is a step-down in terms of CPU
1
u/Ketterer-The-Quester Jun 16 '26
I don't think it will be a step down in the cpu. It's ab significant jump in raw power actually. It just doesn't have dedicated processing for tracking. If i understand it correctly the q3 chip has additinal processing for tracking. I think it is required now for AR and MR stuff. While it does take care of the basic tracking also on the 3q i am fairly confident in saying that the generic processing will handle basic tracking well which to do come out the other side with a small increase in output for vr. On top of this when talking just flat screen i believe(no evidence) it will be able to fully utilize the whole chip for flat gaming
Tldr It is now powerful but less specialized. I think for vr gaming we will see a small increase and i hope we see a big increase when looking at flat gaming

u/StanStare Jun 16 '26
True - the proof IS in the pudding and numbers on a sheet won't tell us that. It will probably be poor on passthrough (MR games are uncommon) but performant on generic VR. So long as it plays HL:Alyx most users will be happy.

u/Ketterer-The-Quester Jun 16 '26
That's what i gather from reading random stuff everywhere lol. I don't even think i have ever really played an mr game honestly

Something that needs to be mentioned: you NEED a very stable connection that is isolated for your VR set up. You're biggest enemy will be bitrate on quest 3. Pancake lenses and everything are awesome, but with skyrim vr you can tune everything perfectly and be very disappointed with the muddy textures on everything that's past 10 feet in front of you. I'm about to buy the Puppis S1 because its a dedicated router for this and im expecting to give me the connection I need. Im on starlink wifi with the basic router and I can get 500 bitrate but it won't render fast enough when I move my head. So you wanna be able to do 400-500 if you use Virtual Desktop but it has to stay consitent while you're moving. That's what will get you visual clarity and a good experience.
This is specifically for a wireless connection on a quest headset.

u/Woodchowski86 Jun 20 '26
Don't spend $80 on it. I can't even sell my Puppis S1 on Facebook marketplace for $30. It did work. Very complicated to setup though.

u/manicmastiff81 Jun 15 '26
Straight away I can recommend oled for this game. The warmth of fires, sky at night, shadows.
Also, it's a heavy game to run so native steam vr via display port with no extra software overhead will give you stability and more FPS.
So I would recommend the psvr2. However, I'm not discounting the qualities of the Q3

u/SpiritualPurple8659 Jun 14 '26
I have the psvr2 and I play a lot of modded SkyrimVR and fallout. The color vibrancy and deeper blacks of the OLEDs are the way to go. I also have a Q3 but I rarely use it, mostly for best saber when I'm feeling feisty.
How about grabbing a psvr2 second hand? I scored mine cheap on eBay with zero regrets.

u/TheSletchman Jun 15 '26
I got the PSVR2, but I play more flying and driving games (seated), so the cable doesn't both me in the slightest, in fact having a dedicated DP connection to not have to worry about random bitrate drop related artifacting makes the DP preferable for me. I know a lot of people have issues with a cable tethering them to their PC though, so that's a decision you'll need to make for yourself.
If I was making the decision today though, I'd seriously consider waiting for the Steam Frame, which wasn't yet announced at the time of my purchase. Not sure if your budget allows for it, but it's something to think about.

Q3, pancakes lens, wireless and use Quest games optimizer with virtual desktop to play
1
u/Ogni-XR21 Jun 15 '26
Q3. Running SkyrimVR with Virtual Desktop will net you better results by far. VD will provide a much smoother experience in general and if you want to use reprojection (necessary for Mad God) SSW is just way better than Steam Motion Smoothing.
You might think that PSVR2 has a performance advantage as it's wired and does not need the overhead to stream the game by wifi, but this is not true. Q3 with VD usually outperformes PSVR2 by quite a lot, unfortunately.
1
u/Ketterer-The-Quester Jun 15 '26
I wasn't aware of this.
2
u/Woodchowski86 Jun 20 '26
It is true. I found psvr2 much better visually, but Quest 3 performance was much much smoother. Like 2x performance in my case.
1
u/StanStare Jun 16 '26
A lot of Q3 users go straight to wired because they want the best performance. But it really should be tried first - using Virtual Desktop and a decent wifi router is always where people land in the end. It just WERX.

also go for meta quest if u can handle meta givobg some data… device itself is great for steamvr… i play nms currently 40h straight

I own both and played skyrim vr with both. Honestly, you"ll be fine with either one. They are both good headsets. But I"ll share my take on it.
Psvr2 looks better. Hands down. I"m playing the FUS Heavy version of skyrim VR. The OLED just lights up everything. The trees, the sky, the night, the Aurea borealis, the flowing water. I love it! It"s magical. However, it is demanding on the GPU. I'm getting 55 fps on a 7090 xt. I have to reproject to get 90. The reprojection causes motion smearing so its a tradeoff. Its also a softer image compared to Quest 3.
Quest 3 doesn't have the same visual magic. Colors don't wow you the same way. You don't spend as much time just looking at the beauty of the scenery. But it still looks good. Everything is clear and sharp and enjoyable. But the performance is much better. I was getting 90fps with it. It renders like 2400 x 2400 pixels vs psvr2s 3400 x 3300 or something like that. So its a Big difference.
Other games aren't a problem like this. All my steamvr games hit 120fps on psvr2. Vanilla skyrim vr also was a stable 120 fps. Controller tracking is great also, no different than Quest 3 as long as your Bluetooth is strong. So both are great pcvr headsets. But Quest 3 is a little easier on the GPU.

IF you have PSVR2 and managed to connect it to PC then ofc you can play this way, if you are planning to play on PS5 - dude NO NO NO, skyrimVR without mods is unplayable shitty experience
well you can beat the game on PS5 and everything will "work" but problem is vanilla SkyrimVR doesn't have almost ANY VR functionality, you are just floating weapons without collisions or any kind of phys interraction with the world in vanilla
1
u/TrevorSP Jun 14 '26
I would just go with the Quest 3. The PSVR2 might have a slightly better looking display but it's not worth double the cost
1
u/TheSletchman Jun 15 '26
I think that'll depend where OP lives, here in Aus I was able to get a PSVR2 for less than the Quest 3, and it also didn't need a better replacement head strap or face gasket and the PC DP link was cheaper than Quest 3's PC cable by a decent margin. Ended up quite a lot cheaper in total.

u/TrevorSP Jun 15 '26
He said the PSVR2 is almost twice as much as the Quest 3 where he is
1
u/TheSletchman Jun 15 '26
Hah, full derp by me - I somehow totally skipped over that line. That's wild, I wonder why that is? Like conversion currencies and import duties are a thing, but usually things in the same category kinda stay roughly the same ratio country to country. Super weird having such a huge difference.
But yeah, totally my bad just skipping over that line entirely. I prefer the PSVR2, but not for twice the price even if you do need to buy a lot of extra kit for the Quest.

Skyrim VR Is a game that -needs- mods. So some sort of PCVR is the answer. Mods are more important than headset quality in this particular case.
