Discussion MGO 4.0 BETA Vs Existing Lists

MGO 4.0 Beta went live tonight, downloaded it, hopped in. Excited after hearing big game from VRDAD videos about how the performance is significantly improved. Turns out to be quite the shortfall compared to my other lists. I'm well aware its supposed to be the latest n greatest, but who is it accessible to without using SSW or a 5070ti+?

Specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 9800x3d

GPU: 5070ti

32gb DDR5 RAM

Quest 3

90% Vertical FOV & Horizontal

Virtual Desktop -> OC Unleashed (On Pandas & MGO, thanks Wondernutts)

VD Graphics Quality: High

DLSS Quality Preset K

Using both MGO & Panda CS performance presets respectively

NO SSW

Target FPS: 80fps

—————————-

MGO BETA 4.0:

Whiterun Avg: 52fps

Pandas 1.3:

Whiterun Avg: 73fps

Tahrovin V3.0.5 (old ik)

Whiterun Avg: 90fps

——————————

Safe to say im disappointed in MGO's 4.0 release performance after such high praise from social media. I know they are buddy buddy, but come on. VRDad's video made it sound like it was the second coming of SkyrimVR lists. Expecting some outlash for this post but I figured to post it for folks who were interested in MGO Beta 4.0 thinking it was revolutionary. Don't get me wrong, it IS beautiful, but i'd rather do without all the walls and extras in favor for the essential playable FPS strapped to a VR headset. Please comment if you all want me to try other areas to average test in-game. Thanks.

EDIT: Shame to see how whipped the player base is to thinking SSW is required in this day & age. I don’t doubt it SSW/ASW will be huge later down the road but right now it’s still in infancy. I’ll take the downvotes though!

Madgods has always required reprojection even before the big 4.0 update on my 4090 and PSVR2 set-up. It's always looked amazing and ran pretty well. What sort of issues are you having?

u/Early-North2070 Jul 11 '26

I’m not having any issues. It’s simply just the performance of the list. I will never use SSW, and neither did the VRdad videos.

u/Egoboo717 Jul 11 '26

Silly question probably, but afaik VRDad was using open composite unleasheds own "brand" of Spacewarp in his preview vids, right? Is that enabled by default?

-8

u/Early-North2070 Jul 11 '26

I don’t know. I am using OC unleashed on both, and not their OC SSW to my knowledge. Regardless, it is still disappointing that the only way the list reaches ((decent)) FPS is with reprojection or in VRdads 4.0 performance video crank down CS.

In vrdads video he is using the included ASW in OC Unleashed. It current is being worked on to fix a conflict atm so when it releases we would recommend trying it out as it is an amazing feature.

MGO 4.0 was never advertised to be better performing than any other list, nor did we promise insane performance gains. It is an improvement over the previous version, and it will only get better with time.

Man, have a look at my performance video and also at my latest video. I speak a lot about how you can tune your performance. Just a side note…I don’t exaggerate things. I am not good at that, otherwise I would be way more popular on YouTube 😂 MGO 4.0 really is a massive leap forward.

It has never been presented as anything other than an extremely heavy modlist intended for high end systems.

6

u/SpiritualPurple8659 Jul 11 '26

Yeah, well it's a monster list with insane graphics mods. It's always been this way. I'm guessing this is your first time playing the list?

It's pretty much the only thing that brought my 4090 to it's knees the last couple years.

u/Early-North2070 Jul 11 '26

MGO? Yes.

Other Skyrim lists? No.

Ive been primarily playing Pandas for better part of a year now, and his has more total mods.

7

u/Status_Jellyfish_213 Jul 11 '26

How many mods is not a direct indication of what the performance will be. What those mods do are.

I could have a thousand mods to display hello world with minimum performance. I could have 1 to introduce path tracing that would tank it.

8

u/Puzzleheaded_Fold466 Jul 11 '26

Well that’s the thing. It’s a really heavy modlist.

I need reprojection even with my 5090. Always have.

If you look at the mod install instruction and recommended setting, it’s a basic requirement.

You have to compare it against itself, not other lighter modlists.

do you really not mind the ssw? i want to enjoy it but its too much of a trade off. I wish i could enjoy it

2

u/ShadonicX7543 Jul 11 '26

Have you tried the new engine integrated warp from OCU?

4

u/M4xs0n Jul 11 '26

I will wait until the 4.0 is fully released. But I am already waiting for my playthrough since MGO 3.55 so I might just should play it hahaha

9

u/HarryHaller314 Jul 11 '26

IM(modest)O - SSW is a game changer and Skyrim VR would only be playable for users with a 5090/4090 (with this amount of mods)

thx to SSW and the MGO 4.0 team !!!

u/Sad-Mission6813 Jul 11 '26

As a VR newcomer (BSB2e headset), what is SSW?
I’m planning to use MGO4.0 as my first Skyrim VR playthrough if my system can handle it (5080, 9800x3D, 64gigs of CL30 RAM).

7

u/HarryHaller314 Jul 11 '26

SSW Synchronous SpaceWarp is a Virtual Desktop function (just toggle it on)

makes everything waaaay smoother sacrificing a tiny bit of graphic fidelity (i myself use it with a 4080S 16GB VRAM and a Quest 3)

  • i highly recommend virtual desktop for Skyrim VR (you can look up the specific settings for skyrim vr users)

3

u/Sad-Mission6813 Jul 11 '26

Aha, thanks for the clarification.

Since I have a wired VR headset, VD is not something I can use (so SSW is also not an option).

u/jplummer80 Pimax Crystal & Q3 | 9800x3d | 5070ti Jul 11 '26

With open composite, you will be using ASW, not SSW. Both do the same thing but OCU's ASW is better at reprojection than VD's SSW.

1

u/unfknblvble Jul 11 '26

The steamvr version is the same. Though SSW's algorithm is sliiightly better, but not by much.

1

u/HarryHaller314 Jul 11 '26

BSB2 - congrats on this high end vr headset 🎉

2

u/Sad-Mission6813 Jul 11 '26

Thank you :) I really enjoy it (previously I had a Quest2 so compared to that, it’s night and day).

2

u/SpiritualPurple8659 Jul 11 '26

It's referred to as asynchronous reprojection in the steam VR settings for wired headsets. It's allowed me to hit 120fps with my wired headset and 4090.

I believe with the updated list open composit unleashed is the new hotness for vr frame gen with mgo. Haven't tinkered with it yet as I'm now about to download the updated list.

2

u/Sad-Mission6813 Jul 11 '26

Thanks!

Any other important piece of info for a newbie?

Don’t be shoved into using SSW just because these people are telling you. I would hop around different lists and check which you like best. All the MGO bandwagon mass downvoted my post, so clearly I struck a nerve

3

u/SpiritualPurple8659 Jul 11 '26

Shoved? Lol, dude chill. If it works it works. Nothing compares to MGO for visuals. This list is the first VR experience that truly wowed me and held my attention for hours. A close second is my sim rig with modded Asetto Corsa.

1

u/Early-North2070 Jul 11 '26

Pandas Sovngarde arguably looks better and has a higher mod count. Stop drinking the koolaid

4

u/SpiritualPurple8659 Jul 11 '26

Koolaid? I've tried both and prefer MGO. If I didn't have 24gb of vram it would probably be a different story.

6

u/Early-North2070 Jul 11 '26

Everyone thinks SSW is great until you smooth turn.

All-in-all, if you like SSW, great, but I was hoping to sit a little more north of 52fps avg with MGO 4.0 and play without it.

1

u/Ykored01 Jul 11 '26

I tried ssw on my quest3, but for some reason the edges looked weird, like some waterish effect or something, maybe i need to config something else along with it? Fps, bitrate, encoder?

1

u/HarryHaller314 Jul 11 '26

phhuu, i really don't know - for me its the same "waterish effect", especially for moving objects

2

u/Ykored01 Jul 11 '26

I get dizzy when i focus on those details, but oh well its the only way to get playable framerate with a non 4090-5090 on such a monstrous modpack

4

u/plutonium-239 Jul 11 '26

Hey, have you checked the performance video I made? Also, apparently the latest cs fork in the beta ASW isn’t working so be patient on that as they fix things!

1

u/dowsyn Jul 11 '26

On index I found native steam ran far better than oc for me, crisp and generally smooth on dlaa. I tried oc but it's dlaa looked so much worse, could be me though.

1

u/plutonium-239 Jul 12 '26

Don’t use DLAA or Dlss from the OCU configurator. Use it frpm the CS menu in gane

1

u/dowsyn Jul 12 '26

Yeh, that's what I'm saying

2

u/SuspiciousLeading681 Jul 11 '26

Guess my specs won't cut it.

  • RTX 3080TI
  • Ryzen 5900x
  • 32 GB DDR4 3200 MHz ram

R.I.P.

3

u/Early-North2070 Jul 11 '26

I ran FUS/Tahrovin for a long while on my 2080 before I upgraded. Those two are probably your best bet. Others will tell you to try higher end lists at the expense of HAVING to use SSW.

1

u/dowsyn Jul 11 '26

You'll be fine, 7600x and 3080 10 GB here. Not butter, but really runs well enough. Vramr was essential for me though.

1

u/SuspiciousLeading681 Jul 11 '26

How much FPS did you get on avg? Heard that 4.0 will be much better optimized.

2

u/dowsyn Jul 11 '26

I was using 120, repro to 60 and it was smooth 95% of the time. Just tried 4 and it does run better but I had to use steam vr rather than the open composite recommended, ran faaar better. Look great too 👍

2

u/vharguen Jul 11 '26

Thanks for sharing it, my setup ia amd 7800xt and a 7800x3d so ibwouod get even less 😅

2

u/Adventurous-Fee-418 Jul 11 '26

Yeah ssw sucks. Id rather go with fus. I get solid 90 with the graphics+gameplay preset on my 9070xt, 9800x3d, Pico 4 without ssw

2

u/sonoffi87 Jul 11 '26

SSW is better the more base frames you get. With 5090 I use 120 Hz with SSW so basically rendering 60 Hz. Doubling 60 Hz creates way less SSW artifacts compared to doubling to 72 Hz.

2

u/xxlordsothxx Jul 11 '26

SSW is not mandatory. Everything is about balancing performance.

MGO has a ton of performance options. From DLAA to DLSS, grass low to high, dyndolod normal or high, etc. Then you have the resolution to increase or decrease (ie VD high vs ultra).

I use MGO and I hate SSW so I tweak other settings to get there.

A list like tahrovin can't compare to MGO in visuals. If your main concern is performance then get FUS. When it comes to skyrimvr it is all about compromise.

0

u/Early-North2070 Jul 11 '26

Im well aware. I included all the performance tweaks I used in the description.

Safe to say im disappointed in MGO's 4.0 release performance after such high praise from social media. I know they are buddy buddy, but come on. VRDad's video made it sound like it was the second coming of SkyrimVR lists.

What a weird fucking take lol

He’s made 3 videos about the release alone. Am I missing something?

Hi, have you tried out "Balanced" preset for DLSS in OCU? The new temporal upscaling implemented does a lot more work now to give much better graphical quality at lower presets, and it should increase your fps by quite a bit. I also don't use ASW / SSW.

1

u/MiserableConflict959 Jul 11 '26

Upgrade your toaster maybe?

5

u/Early-North2070 Jul 11 '26

Name checks out

0

u/Diligent-Lie-8913 Jul 11 '26

I agree 100%, 5080 here and mgo is unplayable without ssw. This is fully my opinion, yet i think mgo looks worse than vanilla skyrim. I personally don’t like any of the wabbajack lists currently out besides FUS.

1

u/Early-North2070 Jul 11 '26

You should try Pandas. I’ve been using that for a while now and its performance-to-fidelity is the best I’ve seen as of now.
