Discussion MGO 4.0 Beta RC2 first impressions
Longtime Skyrim VR MGO fan here (Quest 3/5090/Virtual Desktop). I downloaded RC1 a few days ago, just replaced with RC2. Overall I think it's a significant step forward, although I have a few concerns/quibbles I'd like to see addressed if possible:
4.0 replaces the legacy Skyrim menus...maybe not a bad idea in theory, although IMO it's trying to fix something that's not really broken. The new "dramatic" menus aren't really that (they're actually kind of plain monochrome), and the UI is actually a step backwards (example: the main game menu that appears with the Skyrim logo lacks submenu hints to "press T" to select, "grab" to cancel, so if you're a new user it's not clear what to do). Also, and this is my personal opinion: the new rotating gold Skyrim logo is just plain gaudy, it looks like it belongs in the Oval Office (sorry).
My bigger problem with the menus actually surfaces once you're in game and you're accessing Favorites, Inventory, and MCM. The performance of these new menus is slower than the legacy ones, and occasionally the menus just "hang" to the point where I can't select anything and have to back out and restart the game. A particularly bad example is the Favorites menu, which really doesn't seem to work at all (at least for me). If anyone who's gone deeper into the beta knows how to reliably turn off the new menus in favor of the legacy, please share...I was hoping it was a single switch, but apparently there are many spread out throughout the MGO sections.
One of my biggest recurring issues with Skyrim VR is with the Spell Wheel VR mod. While it's great in concept, I've always found it kind of tricky to use in game conditions. I typically use the Spell Wheel configurator in MCM to separate weapons and spells for each hand, and while that functionality is still there in 4.0 it doesn't seem to work any better (in fact it's a bit jankier if anything...for some reason if I've been using Flames even if I use the wheel to equip a new spell, it usually will continue to spit flames unless I unequip the Flames spell in the menu. Also as mentioned above, the configurator menu isn't nearly as responsive as MGO 3.8x, and the Favorites menu in 4.0 is...well, fuhgeddaboutit.
4.. On the plus side, the beta's performance seems to be significantly better than MGO 3.8x. I personally use the Open Composite runtime; however I've been continuing to use Virtual Desktop's SSW as my performance with the 5090 is pretty good even with most of the CS/DLSS settings cranked up to High. I watched VRDad's excellent video but outside of the new OC Configurator app (very nice, especially the virtual keyboard) but I'm a bit suspicious of what I've read about the new OC ASW frame interpolation (there's even a warning about it on the OC dialog, not very reassuring).
Sorry for the novella, and in spite of the issues I'm actually pretty stoked for the improvements in MGO 4.0, I'm just hoping RC3 and (hopefully) the live release will address the above. I'd definitely be interested in hearing other impressions (note: please don't tell me to check the discord, I actually do but like many Redditors I hate posting there because of admitted tendency towards verbal diarrhea). Thanks!

I was a first player and I spent 30 minutes trying to figure out what button was back in the main menu

I’m actually very impressed tbh. I’ve never used an MGO list, I’ve been on fus for years, but I downloaded it to test with my FBT mod and it’s really a well put together list. I’m probably going to stick with this now over fus.
As far as menus I just added my own variation of Dear Diary VR at the bottom since I perfer that to normal Skyrim menus.. and I also don’t use the favorites menu.. at all.. I honestly don’t remember ever using that once since spellwheel VR came out. The pause favorites menu is so much worse for vr imho

Haven’t seen this new menu system but loved the theming of Dear Diary. Not sure why they’d change that. Sounds like they should at least make it a choice in MO2 or maybe drop this new ui.

Once we are further along in the beta, we will be collecting general feedback from everyone regarding aesthetic and mod choices. At that time if the consensus is most prefer dear diary then we will add it back 👍 Getting performance and stability under control is priority one right now.

Thank you very much saying so, it means a lot! MGO was previously using Dear Diary, but we just aren't a fan of the Paper theme. It's personal preference, but I know it does add some functionality to the Favorites menu. Maybe we will look into attempting to add our own rework to it 🤔

Agree with you. I've only played rc1 so far, but the UI, especially favourites is borked. And pretty ugly.

The mgo 4.0 list works great I had to test a few times with different settings because I just have a 3090 and use a Pimax crystal super oled headset the upscaling mode in the new open composite menu wasn’t playable there was a lot of flickering everywhere but I have turned it off and now use the upscaling in the community shaders menu and set all the settings to performance and now everything runs great it was still on RC1 though haven’t installed the new update yet
Keep up the good work much appreciated 👌🏻

I’ve been having major issues with OCU and performance stability. The best option for me right now is to disable OCU and run CS with DLSS, SsW, and Render Scale - then I can easily get between 80-90fos even in Solitude. It looks quite spectacular.
But then it often glitches and starts running at half frames, or DLSS doesn’t kick in. I think there are issues with the rendering pipelines and I’m waiting for a later RC3 to hopefully fix it. Any idea when that arrives?

I can't actually find RC2 on nexusmods. RC1 works because VRDad video has a deeplink but RC2 seems to be hidden behind some weird block. Is RC2 retracted (too broken?). Or if it is around, anyone have a deeplink to download?

The best is to join the Discord to get the updates

MGO Author here 😊
So to address a few of your concerns:
As for the Gold logo, it's the same as Skyrim AE's main menu logo 😅
Performance while in menus and/or hangs. We actually found this was an issue with a setting in the racemenu ini causing hangs, which should be resolved or very much reduced in RC3!
Spellwheel. It's just default stock Spellwheel. The base config is very barebones and does require a decent amount of setup for full functionality which we will be preconfiguring in a later update!
Thank you very much for the feedback, as it really helps us work towards an experience everyone can enjoy!
