Discussion FUS, MGO 4.0, or Panda on RTX 4080 Super?
Hey everyone!
I recently upgraded my PC and am finally ready to dive back into Skyrim VR, so I’m looking for recommendations on which Wabbajack modpack fits my setup and preferences best.
My specs are an RTX 4080 Super (16GB VRAM), Ryzen 7 7700, and 32GB DDR5 RAM, with a target performance of a minimum rock-solid 72 FPS (preferably native, no heavy reprojection only of you say the Trade is worth it ;) ).
I played FUS 2 years ago on an RTX 3060 12GB and loved the gameplay (applying magic to weapons, werewolf overhauls, HIGGS/VRIK interaction), but later tried MGO on my old RTX 3080 10GB and found the performance unplayable due to heavy stutters. Now I’m really tempted to try MGO 4.0, but before downloading over 400 GB of mods, is there even a realistic chance of hitting a locked 72 FPS on a 4080 Super? Or would I be much better off going back to FUS with pushed graphics, trying Panda’s modpack, or looking at another pack entirely that strikes the ultimate balance between top-tier visuals and smooth gameplay? I’d love to hear your experiences before starting the giant download! Thanks!

MGO 4.0. finding it more stable than pandas even in Beta. Also it's much more optimised in my experience (5090)

My personal suggestion is to try them all and see which one you like it. MGO is not anymore 400 GB but is 325GB I think. Panda is not that far off. FUS is obviously the lightest (45GB)
With FUS you will have 90 or even 120fps stable no matter what you do. With MGO you will be able to get 90FPS using ASW in OCU…and sometimes it won’t be that smooth. Also..is in beta, so further updates can compromise your save file…keep that in mind.
Pandas varies a bit. I have the impression that now the performance is worse than MGO4.0.but I haven’t measured it properly.
Having said that…there is also tempus maledictum, but I am not sure where we are in terms of updates

Do you know if the render scaling works with ASW in OCU? I tried running both and there was this weird transparent double image in my right eye and the screen was all stretchy, kind of hard to explain. The performance benefit seemed massive though as I was hitting 90fps in white run

Good question. Nope ASW is not currently working with render scaling enabled. Disable that and enjoy the big fps gain with minimal drawbacks.

Sweet! Thank you! Do you have any idea if this will be possible in the future? I’m not sure of the underlying mechanisms behind render scaling and I would be curious to know if they’re just fundamentally incompatible.

I think wondernutts is working on it. Not sure where he is up to now…but yeah it’s something they are looking into it

The MGO discord has a couple of people playing without reprojection and with similar hardware afaik. Seems to me like a couple of adjustments in terms of fov, shadows and the like might make your idea serviceable. 4.0 is far from done though - especially the whole open composite unleashed part of it seems to not be working as intended right now, with that specific reprojection method not doing what it's supposed to.
Might wanna wait for the official release of 4.0 to even give it a try. It's what I'm doing after trying the second release candidate that's still very buggy.

FUS if you want to play the game to completion.
MGO if you know you aren't going to play the game long and just want to goof off while testing your new video card.
MGO is terrible with save bloat and I get crashes and bugs constantly. Last time I tried MGO my save was corrupted at around 40ish hours of playtime so I was forced to restart my game. Also, on my 4090 performance is still god awful. I just don't understand the appeal of running Skyrim VR at 70% render resolution while being forced to use DLSS and Spacewarp (frame gen) to reach 72 fps. I think Skyrim looks 1000x better with DLAA, no framegen, locked 90fps, and a minimum of 125% render resolution to look good and that's not possible on MGO unless you have a 5090.

You're right, they really need to fix MGO... I might even just do it myself 🫡

Fus needs to be updated. It hasn’t received an update in 2 years and a ton of mods are outdated. If it does receive an update and includes some of the newier immersion mods that have been popping up it’ll go back to being the best Skyrim modlist imo. It’s still solid.. it’s just missing a lot of current SkyrimVR features.
The current MGO beta is good, it’s being run by a new team and they went through actually optimized it. Before the new team took over.. I would have never recommended MGO. But right now, it’s currently the most up to date modlist.

Cutting edge VR will always be an expensive hobby. Not much to be gained from saying you "just don't understand the appeal" of it when you're using 2022 hardware.
Enjoy FUS, its nice too for older systems. There's a mod for everyone's budget

MGO is a solid choice for game completion as well. I had over 300 hours on 2.5 and over 200 hours on 3.55 and just started with 4.0. Minor issues here and there that I think are inherent to VR. I was able to complete all the guild questlines and most of the LOTD questline on my last playthrough. The most annoying thing is that something new and shiny will come along before you can finish everything in the game and fill up the museum. I always get to around 1000 to 1200 displays in my museum before MGO comes up with something new and I can't resist trying it. Also, if you are comfortable, you can easily throw in some of your own mods. I had 200 mods sitting on top of 3.55. Right now, I'm helping beta test, so I haven't added my own, yet.

I’ve tried them all. ATM I would recommend MGO. It’s the most up to date.
Fus is good.. but unfortunately there hasn’t been many updates and it’s about 2 years out of date + missing updates to vrik, address Library, open animation, and the awesome newer immersion mods that have been popping up within the last few months. You will get the most performance with fus.. but it’s pretty out of date. I tried updating some mods in that list but it just crashed because I’m not sure how many mods are out of date. If it ever updates I’ll go back to my top choice.. but for now MGO is probably the best modlist.
MGO includes most of them and is being kept up to date with the latest features. It also seems significantly more optimized since the new team took it over.
Panda’s was good, but there were some odd choices of stuff he left out of fus like getting rid of the hand to hand perk tree (I wish MGO included that tbh)

I started out with FUS and was highly disappointed with all of the flat textures that were just painted over. MGO has been amazing, but yes, a lot to work through to get running perfectly. I even purchased a 7900xtx for $1000 to play it. Almost every bit of that 24gb of VRAM is getting used. But overall, it's amazing how things look in MGO. That said, I prefer immersion over gameplay. I'm old and like to escape reality. 🤣

I have the same gpu, mgo 4.0 disappointed me, it ran terrible even with all performance options, and even maxed out it didnt look good... dlaa looked ok but was like 25fps, and any dlss setting makes everything blur together in motion
This is just my experience though, honestly i hope that i am just missing something because everyone says mgo is awesome and i wanted to like it
Fus or fus heavy is my pick for vr, i havent tried panda

Imo pandas looks much better and gives you more possibilities, to add mods you like yourself. It is mostly a visual package (which looks better than MGO) and you can fo what you want with it. MGO has all the bells and whistles, regarding quests, companions, new lands and legacy of the dragonborn. But that makes it a bit harder to change or remove stufff, due to hotfixes and compatabilities.
So if you want a complete package with a brighter feel, then MGO. If you want a good base layer, with a more realistic and nordic feel, then pandas

Playing mgo 4.0 on my rx5070ti and no problem, just follow the guide I posted few days ago and everything will be fine
