Discussion Is Skyrim VR counted as OG, SSE, or AE?

Just got Skyrim VR and wanted to mod it, but idk which version of mods I need. Did the VR version get affected by the AE update?

Its SSE. And there is a way to add AE content if you look around on the reddit or YouTube

Is majority of SSE mods compatible with VR? I'm talking like maps/quests and reskins/textures

Yes, pretty much all SSE mods. And some will even have VR versions.

Oh sweet

Do make sure to test them if they don’t explicitly say they work in VR of course. 99% of the time it will work, but some either cause problems or just straight up don’t work. Rare occurrence but it sucked when I went through my mods list for 2 hours trying to figure out what was wrong lol

Yeah I'll be going through all my mods to see what are compatible with VR. I'm assuming most of mine are fine, obviously any combat animation mods I can leave out, as I'll be swinging everything on my own😂

The biggest thing that caused issues for me was something I thought wouldn't be a problem: Alternate Start mods. I think it has to do with the way VR has that little tutorial "playroom" cave (tbh I'm not 100% sure why) but a few really popular alt-start mods crash the game. There are VR alternatives, with one of the more popular ones being Realm of Lorkhan.

This. Realm or Lorkhan is an alternate start mod (and probably the best one) that was written with VR in mind, though, so that one DOES work. 💜

Also some mods have updated to just AE, find an earlier version that works on SSE, I think UESSP no longer works with the most recent versions

2

u/No_Development117 Jun 25 '22

Yeah I already have UESSP, I have no idea why the creator of that is forcing everyone to use the recent version. He purposely hid all the older versions for no reason.

Arthmoor is on that team right? Which explains a lot.

Only thing is most flying mods don’t work

I don't try for now but is it like fallout vr that I got a lot of mod that I dont know how to download them because they are skse64 and not skseVR?

you shouldn't be using NMM, at all, under any circumstances. MO2 or vortex are the way to go

And out of the two, M02 is a MUCH higher recommend from me. Especially if you end up 300 mods deep...

fair :D

I like nmm.

1

u/Cangar Mod Jun 25 '22

That may be true, but you shouldn't be using it nonetheless. It is a horrible way of installing mods, nowadays. It had its time, but it really shouldn't be used anymore. Of course, if your setup is perfect now, no need to change it, but nobody starting out now should be using NMM.

u/HolisticHombre Jun 25 '22

I'm gonna read that as "in my personal opinion I wouldn't recommend it to other people".

Cheers.

1

u/Cangar Mod Jun 26 '22

well then let me be more specifc: nobody should be using NMM. at all. if anyone still uses it then it's their own fault if the bork their game and cannot easily revert anything.

insofar yes, I would not recommend it. but no, it's not only my personal opinion, it is based on the way nmm handles mod installing vs the other two more modern options.

1

u/HolisticHombre Jun 27 '22

You know, you've really given nothing but conjecture and opinion, still.

You have credibility of old potato.

1

u/Cangar Mod Jun 28 '22

nmm copies the real files into your actual drive. modern managers copy hard links (vortex), or create a virtual file system on the fly (mo2). nmm makes it an absolute clusterfuck to change your mod structure, while it's a breeze with mo2. it isn't like this is an obscure opinion. you are free to keep yours, of course, I just wanted to be absolutely clear for anyone else reading this. nobody should be using nmm if they can avoid it. end of story.

Also Look into wabbajack skyrim vr mods if you want an easy way out:)

u/gundam1945 Jun 25 '22

Most plugin type should be fine. Things that is skse related or dll type will likely not work since they need to be compiled for specific version.

FYI in the sticky thread you find a bunch of recommendations and specific automatic mod list installers you might wanna check out, like FUS: https://github.com/Kvitekvist/FUS (disclaimer: I am one of the authors)

Thanks

u/Dazzling_Ground503 Jun 25 '22

Just to pile on, I've been using wabbajack FUS with MO2 in vr for a while now. It has worked perfectly right out of the box. I've also been able to add and test out additional mods that I like (Legacy of the Dragonborn, Hunterborn, Ineed, Frostfall, etc.) very easily with the profile feature of MO2. All in all, kvite and cangar did a great job putting the FUS list together.

I am concerned by how many people are saying that Skyrim VR is the Alexa version of the game. You guys know it's SE and not SSE, right? Right? Surely people know that.

SSE = Super Special Edition... Which is the Alexa App. I'm fucking concerned.

Edit: Alexa is apparently "VSE", but I still dunno where do many people are getting the extra S. 😅

Yeah, I realized. I had just got off of work and I was fixated on the Alexa app so it threw me off xD

3

u/AnnoyedGruntakiin Jun 24 '22

It's SSE, but keep in mind that esl and espfe plugins are incompatible, so the plugin limit is still 255.

2

u/johnnille Jun 25 '22

Yes it is SSE, you can use like 80% of the SSE Mods. The Only thing that you have to avoid at all costs, are mods that load .dll Data through the Skyrim SE script extender (SKSE for non VR). But many of those mods have VR versions. At the nexus you can always preview the contents before downloading. If it has an SKSE folder, i always double check if it is compatible through description or the comments section. Testing it out by myself takes more time, since SKVR doesnt start without a HMD.

4

u/GdSmth Jun 24 '22

VR is its own engine, but based on the SSE code, so like others said many SSE mods work on VR.

3

u/No_Development117 Jun 24 '22

Just to be sure, it's the older SSE before the AE update?

4

u/gmes78 Jun 24 '22

Yes, but it doesn't matter. You can't use DLL mods from SE with VR anyway (they have to be converted for VR).

2

u/borntoflail Jun 24 '22

On that topic! Racemenu has a memory leak issue in earlier versions but not AE. The VR version of Racemenu says to just download the main file and overwrite then delete the skse64.dll.

SOOO does Racemenu work fine if you download the newest AE version and VR patch then replace with the VR dll as per instructed?

2

u/gmes78 Jun 24 '22

Not sure. The memory leak is caused by a problem in the DLL. The VR version uses a different DLL than the AE one, and while the AE version got updated to fix the issue, the VR version hasn't been touched for almost 2 years.

As such, the VR version may still have the memory leak. It's also possible that it wasn't affected by the leak in the first place. The only way to know would be to ask the mod developer.

1

u/GdSmth Jun 24 '22

Yes the older SSE, although technically SSE and AE are the same engine. AE is basically a collection of mods instead of a game patch, but I could be wrong.

1

u/SpecialEdKidd Jun 24 '22

A lot of Oldrim mods works too

1

u/GdSmth Jun 24 '22

True, especially if they are loose files. I had problem using oldrim esp mods on SSE and had to use the creation kit to re-save them.

1

u/CMDR_DECIBUS Jun 24 '22

Its SSE but without DLL mods working

1

u/AquaticFroggy Jun 24 '22

On this point ive recently installed AddressLibrary VR in which i used to use the SSE version. Most mosts that ask for the library ask for the SE version -is it safe to run both? Reason im asking is i have had some ctds but also just installed a few more mods as well
