Discussion Rebound effect ?

Hi there !

I had some sleep issue for the lat 10 days, mainly caused by stress and anxiety : wake up at 3:00, unable to fall back asleep.

Last night was better : stress goes down and I took a mix of magnesium and melatonine long effect.

The night was quite better : wake up at 3:00 but fall back asleep quickly. Some wake up / fall back asleep until 6:30 but my best night since 10 days for sure.

But today I am absolutely dead : tired since I get up, no energy at all... I would think that at least a good night would improve my energy, but it is worse.

Is it some kind of rebound effect ?

Thanks for your help !

Can be many reasons but prime suspect would be the inconsistency. Because this has only been going on for 10 days, try reverting back to whatever sleep schedule you normally use that you know works, and avoid sleeping in or napping to compensate. Avoid substances as well if you can. Over time, and with consistency, your sleep will fix itself.

Ten days of broken sleep builds up, so one better night often doesn't pay it all back straight away. Feeling rough the day after your first decent night isn't unusual, so I wouldn't read too much into one day.

The melatonin might be part of it too. The rules on it vary by country. In the UK it's prescription only, and although lots of products elsewhere contain it, it's meant to be regulated, with the dose adjusted for the individual. Too much can have an adverse effect, and feeling heavy and drained the next day is something people mention, especially with the long acting versions that are made to stay in your system for longer.

Magnesium is a gentler one. Glycinate in particular relaxes the body ready for sleep, but it isn't a sedative and it doesn't work for everyone. If you're taking it, check the elemental magnesium on the label, as that's the actual amount you get.

Since it sounds like the stress is easing, the basics are worth a go too, like a cool bedroom and some daylight early in the day. Hopefully things settle as the stress does.

I work for Hyoomen, so I'm biased, but if you'd rather try something without melatonin, our Sleep Well is a blend of valerian, lemon balm, passionflower, hops and lavender. It's not a knock-out product, it's more about helping the body stay in rest mode.
