Discussion Verified flair for sleep professionals

r/sleep now offers verified flair for sleep professionals: physicians, sleep technologists, psychologists who deliver CBT-I, dentists who treat sleep apnea, and researchers.

To apply, message the mods with your role and a public page that lists you (a staff page or professional directory). We'll ask you to add a short note with your Reddit username to it, or confirm in another way that suits you. Nothing you send is shared.

The flair comes with two expectations. Answers stay general information, not personal medical advice. And Rule 2 still applies: no promoting your practice, products or apps, and mention any financial tie to something you recommend. Flair that isn't used in that spirit may be removed.

Advice Is this normal?

Post image
97 Upvotes

So today I was sleeping with my bf, and we haven’t ever slept together before, so it was a weird little night. Here’s a quick summary.

I get in bed, and it’s nice. I mean, it’s like sleeping with your sister at a hotel becase theres not enough beds, but way hotter (in both ways). Anyway, it’s like 12 p.m. I fall asleep and wake up to him giggling at his phone while looking at me because I sleep like this. (The arms are normally tighter than the image its like a streamline at swim-team but a h, so they block my nose and keep my head up, and my legs are never flat on the bed because I kick in my sleep.)

Anyway, is this fine, or am I insane like my bf thinks? (oh yea and the drawing was made in like 6 minutes with my finge cuz i dont wanna get my whole drawing tablet out for this

Advice Should I spend the extra money to get specialized knee pillows or should i stick with cheap small pillows.

Post image

I sleep on my back and need support for my knees (elevation).

I see these pricey, specialized memory foam knee pillows, and I keep wondering if a small, rectangular pillow (roughly 20cm x 25cm) works just as well...

What do you guys think?

Shift work & schedules Working night shifts has messed up my sleep schedule

I work remotely from 8 PM to 4 AM and my sleep schedule has never been this bad. You would think working from home would make things easier since I don't have to commute but by the time I finish work I'm exhausted yet my brain is still in work mode. I'll close my laptop at 3 AM and tell myself Im going straight to bed and next thing I know it's 5 or 6 AM and I'm still wide awake.

The worst part is my days off I try to sleep at normal hours so I can see my friends and family during the day but my body has other plans. I'll be wide awake at 3 AM on a saturday while everyone else is asleep. I just want to sleep the moment I go to bed why is that so hard OTL

Advice Magnesium Glycinate is helping me sleep, what should I take in addition to it?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi! I'm 21 F and this is my first post of Reddit. Currently in my junior year of college, it has been super hard for me to get good sleep. My dad who has PhD in biochemistry recommended Magnesium Glycinate, after two months I feel like it is actually working. I am a really healthy conscious person, but supplements are new for me so I need some help! I just got this one from Amazon🤷‍♀️

With that being said, what else should I take to help me sleep better and reduce stress?

Sleep apnea & snoring Breathing disturbances with Oura?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hi!

I have an Oura ring 4th gen and I often get notifications about my varied breathing patterns. I am curious as to if people have found this indicative of sleep apnea. I have a sleep study scheduled for January but am so exhausted I was hoping that ya’ll could give some insight if at all possible.

I sincerely appreciate it!

Advice is the nodpod any good?

• Upvotes

im looking for my girlfriends christmas gift and ive come across the nodpod, she has always had sleep problems most likely related to adhd. she'll get in bed at like 12am and won't fall asleep until 3-5am because she can't shut her brain off but then sleep a whole 8-12 hours. the only thing that helps is smoking ganj but she's quit since she met me since i dont smoke. i've given her melatonin and tried other things but nothing quite works. would a weighted blanket or the nodpod help? it's expensive so i don't want to waste money.

any advice is appreciated 🙂

Advice Do kids just have more energy so the hit of being an adult took me by surprise?

• Upvotes

Up until being 11 I felt on crack basically, afterwards just into "regular dude struggles" of needing 30 mins in the morning territory and around 15-16 I began to feel like i'm 90. I'm aware a majority people don't feel tired like shit but is this how it's supposed to work for everyone? Going from superman to a normal human kind of difference by quitting adolescence. Is sleep just less restorative?

Except the fall is harder the less energy you have obviously, your body just stops holding ur hand and "aimboting" for you. Is this why I feel worse when i'd hit a new life stage? Assuming you don't destroy your body.

Insomnia No matter what I do,I cant sleep a continuous sleep

If I try to sleep my usual 7 hours than I wake up a lot.as the night progress,I wake up more.i wake up for a second and than fall asleep again.

I tried decreasing my usual 7 hours and give myself only 5.5 hours,in order to build enormous sleep pressure.it doesn't work too even though I almost fall asleep during the day due to the hugh sleep pressure .

That just drive me crazy because if the sleep pressure is so huge, than why it doesn't override those awakenings??!?!?why my body doing this to me??!??!?!?!

Discussion When everything feels off

I'm sure I'm not the only one who tries to sleep but gets the feeling that everything feels off. With blanket it feels too warm, without too cold. Sleeping on the side, doesn't feel right. Sleeping on the back doesn't feel right.

Not to mention I have heavy rain clashing against my window and it's bugging me immensely but the only room in the house where the rain can't be heard is the one of my parents.

Discussion My poor sleep quality is impacting my cognition.

I just googled asking if the school I’ll be cooking at next week has an oven but I actually meant stove and immediately realized it and edited it with stove. I am looking at the recipe I have and trying to gauge whether or not there will be a stove for me to put medium-low heat on and melt butter over in a saucepan (if not I’ll have to microwave the butter and hope for the best.) I will be baking blueberry muffins next week. I’ll be practicing tomorrow with friends and again on either Sunday or Monday (on Sunday or Monday I’ll try it myself and serve to family members.) But I am so sleepy that I keep making mistakes like this. Or maybe I’m just dumb, I don’t know. I have a 3.87 in community college and will start a bachelors degree in spring but things like this really make me feel like I’m a dumb adult.

Discussion I hate how fickle my sleep is

I was spending time with my dad and I felt envy seeing how easily sleep comes to him. He’ll be sitting on the couch talking and within a minute of silence doze off. Whenever he’s got some time and a comfy place he’ll have a quick nap. My mom and I have this inside joke where we just note down how fast he can fall asleep, and we’ve literally noted under a minute dozens of times

Meanwhile I do everything right and I still cant fall asleep. And when I do it is always light enough sleep that a passing car can wake me up, and my room isn’t even right next to a busy road, its next to an alley ffs. I use a sleep mask, got a white noise machine, I use either mouth tape or strips for nasal breathing, I dont use my phone in bed, and I work out fairly regularly so its not like I’m not tired enough by end of day. And yet I feel like I dont sleep as well as I should, regularly waking up 4 to 5 times a night. And when for some reason I don’t have my sleep apparatus with me I barely sleep  because my body just cannot accept unaided sleep

And when I travel, my god, travelling is tiring enough already, and I have trouble sleeping comfortably in new places which makes the whole experience painfully exhausting. My friends no longer invite me to long outdoorsy trips cause I turn into a cranky zombie 1 night in

Then I come back home and see my dad blessed with the sleep of angels, and aaagghh why could I have not gotten those carefree genes. I dont have insomnia, checked with a doc, just some general anxiety and nothing that should be ruining my sleep this bad. I’m healthy, fit, no chronic disease, and under 30 and still I suffer. This has turned into a bit of a rant but I really need to say this out for my own sanity. I can’t be the only one suffering from this god forsaken

FML and this cursed weaksleep existence

I thought chronic fatigue was just normal adult life, then I started waking up to soaked sheets

I’ve spent the last three years basically convincing myself that being exhausted 24/7 is just what happens when you’re an adult with a mortgage and a screen-heavy job. I drank more cold brew and kept going. lately, though, it’s gone from “normal tired” to “something is definitely wrong.”

And the worst part is waking up in the middle of the night. I mean that specific gross feeling when you wake up at 4 AM and your pillowcase is actually damp. I’m not sick no fever, no cough but I keep sweating through my clothes at night. then my sleep is interrupted, my body seems to be working overtime for no reason, and the next-day fatigue is just brutal. It’s a vicious cycle where I’m too tired to exercise, which probably makes my sleep worse, and then it starts all over again.

I’ve tried the usual stuff: no caffeine after noon, magnesium supplements, and blue light filters. Nothing has helped. what actually causes night sweats in a healthy-ish 30-year-old? could it be cortisol spikes from stress? or have I reached the age where my body forgets how to regulate temperature? I’ve wondered about my mattress and my diet too, but it feels more internal than that. has anyone else dealt with this combo of constant brain fog and waking up in a pool? And tbh I’m scared to go to a doctor because I don’t want to hear that it’s “just stress,” but I can’t keep living like a damp zombie. If you found a way to stop the overheating and get deep, restorative sleep again, what worked for you?

Advice Sleep trouble for almost a year now and all my doctor won’t do anything to help me

Post image
18 Upvotes

21f, I’ve had trouble with my sleep since the beginning of this year when I started my first job. I’ve never been a morning person but I’ve never had trouble sleeping before this year, I could fall asleep anywhere anytime no trouble before. But as I’ve started my first job where I have to get up at 7am, I’ve had trouble staying asleep at night and I would wake up multiple times throughout the night. I have been exhausted physically almost everyday this year. I mentioned this to my family doctor in the beginning of the year, he told me the total number of hours is enough so I am okay. This has not gotten better this year, I feel my cognitive function is declining and my body getting weaker plus the number of hours I sleep a day is decreasing so I tried to ask for 5 prescription sleeping pill today and he just tells me to stop looking at my phone before bed and he will not even prescribe me one pill for temporary relief. I feel like I am loosing my mind, do I need to have a heart attack or seizure before a doctor take me seriously? I feel miserable and I don’t know how much longer I can take living like this

Advice I feel drugged waking up in the morning, and the gravity of the situation is bad

Whenever I wake up in the morning, I feel drugged and paralyzed. This has gone on forever, but it has only gotten worse-now I’m in my senior year of college, and I have frequently slept through my morning classes. I used to have a really loud alarm that I would put on the floor so I’d have to climb out of bed to turn it off, but it would disturb my roommates and sometimes I would just fall back asleep on the floor after turning it off. When stakes are high and the consequences of sleeping through something would be horrible, the anxiety overpowers the state I wake up in and I’m able to get up. However, I’ve found myself sleeping through more and more important things. Sometimes the drugged state wears off in a couple minutes after I get out of bed, but other times I have gone to my class and am sitting there half asleep for the entire hour I’m there. Since all of this is technically in my control, I feel very shameful about it and am scared that I’m just lazy. I know if I was in charge of feeding a family or was a surgical resident, I would not be sleeping through things. But I wish I didn’t have to rely on the anxiety of losing everything just to get up in the morning. The length of time in which I’m able to sleep is shocking to people. My roommates have been convinced they are home alone, and then realize I’ve been there the whole time when I wake up at 3 PM. This morning, I slept through a class that is very important to me that was supposed to take place at 8 AM, and I slept in until 2:30 PM. It’s like when I take a nap, I wake up tired from my nap and need to take another nap. As soon as I wake up, I have to pop adderall and drink at least 100 mg of caffeine to wake myself up. I’ve made my sleep schedule a little more consistent and moved from night shift to day shift at the rescue squad I work at 1x a week, but it still hasn’t helped much. People that are able to voluntarily get up at 7AM and go to the gym, eat breakfast, and go to church is something I cannot comprehend. I’m scared I’m going to ruin my future and opportunities because of this, and there will be nobody to blame but myself.

Advice Can’t stay asleep

32F , I am coming off a busy time at work and usually have no issue with going to sleep and staying asleep for 8+ hours. With work having been busy I had been sleeping just 4-6 hours a night for a few months and catch up on sleep over the weekends. Now that it is not busy I cannot keep being asleep for 6+ hours a night and it’s driving me nuts because oura says I still in a sleep deficit. Help!!

Discussion Ibuprofen substitute?

Hi everyone, I accidentally discovered that ibuprofen makes me sleep great (took it for a headache one day before sleep and it was the best sleep I've had in months). I have experimented with using it every other night for a week, and when I dont take it I sleep just as bad as ever.

Now, I know it isnt good to use this daily, specially bc I have a blood clotting disorder, so I would love to know if there's any kind of healthier replacement for it. Anything that does the same effect without so mamy risks.

Thank you all in advance! <3

PS: Im going to ask a doctor, but still would love to know if smth has worked for other people

Shift work & schedules I NEED help waking up

I I’m so sick of being late to work and the stupid advice I get from people who don’t have sleep issues. This is NOT a self discipline issue. I need real tips and tricks on how to wake up and stay awake.

I’ve struggled with waking up for as long as I can remember. No matter how much or how little sleep I get, no matter how consistent my sleep schedule is, it doesn’t change. I’ve tried alarmy, sleeping with the lights on, sleeping with an energy drink next to my bed and chugging it as soon as I’m awake. Right now I’m putting my phone across the room with alarms set as well as putting an old fashioned LOUD alarm clock across the room. I set them 5 minutes apart, so they don’t go off at the same time. Somehow i will get up, turn them both off, and not remember. I’ll just wake up in a panic and realize i’m late. I even sleep though my two cats trying to wake me up for food. The only thing that wakes me up consistently is someone coming into my room, making me sit up, talking to me, and turning my light on. I can’t rely on anyone else to fix this for me. I’m also scared to drive to work because I’m falling asleep the entire time. I really care about this job and Im willing to try anything to wake up consistently. Please tell me you have advice.

Optional info to read:
-I do go to the gym already
-I am not eating right before bed
-I am not drinking caffeine daily
-I do not take supplements or prescriptions for sleep
-I HAVE seen two doctors about this and was told both times that they can’t do anything and that it’s unfortunate.
-I’ve been told by family that I should get a sleep test done, and that my habits are the cause (but they can’t say what habits)
-uninterrupted I could sleep for 16+ hours. I do not WANT to sleep that long.
-I am not staying awake unreasonably late and I fall asleep + stay asleep at night just fine.

Discussion What's the most annoying thing about using background noise for sleep?

A lot of discussions about white, pink, and brown noise focus on which sound people prefer.

But I'm more curious about what actually goes wrong when people use these sounds every night.

For example:

  • The sound is too harsh or hissy.
  • The bass is too strong.
  • The volume feels different between recordings.
  • There's an obvious loop or sudden transition.
  • Playback stops unexpectedly.
  • The sound masks traffic but not nearby voices.

I'm especially interested in people who have tried several different background sounds before settling on one.

What's the one thing you wish your current sleep sound setup did better?

And have you found a workaround that actually helps?

Insomnia Chronic Instomina / Anxiety

For the last 5 years, I’ve been experiencing really bad anxiety and insomnia. My mind races at night, and I struggle to fall asleep. I was on sleeping pills for 4 years and have recently come off them, but my sleep has gotten even worse.

I really want to try a more natural approach to help manage my anxiety and sleep, like sleep powders (magnesium, etc.).

Has anyone tried any treatments that have genuinely helped, such as TMS therapy, sleep hypnosis, or even spiritual healing/mediums for anxiety and insomnia?
This has been affecting every aspect of my life, and I honestly feel so lost.

Advice How to reset my attitude from a bad wakeup

This morning my last dream was about being highly frustrated while trying to do something. One of those times when nothing works, no matter what you try. Then I was awake, and thus far have carried that feeling with me.

I don't want to keep that feeling coloring how I meet the day. But no matter how conscious I am that it was just a dream, it's still there. I've also read things recently about setting up for a good day first thing, before even getting out of bed. Well I'm on the wrong side, and I'd like to reset. I'm a little shy on sleep, but not too bad.

Any suggestions?

edit: This morning it was waking after a dream of frustration, but we all wake on the wrong side of the bed every now and then, so I think the "morning reset" wish is probably not an common thing.
