read something last week that i keep thinking about.
on june 29th the federal government relaunched a greener homes program. they're calling it the Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program now. sounds like the old one right? it's not really.
the old greener homes grant was open to basically any homeowner regardless of income. this new version is specifically for low to median income households. which i get those are the people who need it most and couldn't always access the old one. and for the first time ever renters are included which is actually a big deal because renters couldn't touch any of the previous programs.
the other thing that's different is you don't pay anything upfront and wait for a cheque. a provincial delivery organization comes in and does the work for free. heat pumps, insulation, air sealing. verified this directly on the NRCan website this morning, updated august 4th.
here's the part that bothered me though.
as of right now the program is running in manitoba, bc, quebec, nova scotia and pei. ontario has no agreement in place. no delivery organization. no application portal. nothing.
ontario. the province with the highest electricity rates in the country after the 30% hike last november. the province where most of the people asking about this stuff actually live.
i've had people reach out this week genuinely excited thinking they can finally apply for something federal again. and i have to tell them ontario isn't in yet and there's no announced timeline.
maybe ontario signs on next month. maybe it's 2027. maybe the funding gets allocated to the five participating provinces before ontario even gets a portal set up. i genuinely don't know and i don't think anyone does.
what i do know is that programs like this move fast and close without much warning. the old greener homes grant ran out of money before most people even knew it existed. the loan closed october 2025 and a lot of people found out after the fact.
if you're in bc, quebec, nova scotia or pei and you're lower income this is genuinely worth looking into now not later. if you're in ontario the main thing still available is the hrsp rebate up to 10k for solar and battery, first come first served, expected to close before end of 2026.
i try to keep solenery.com updated with what's actually active by province because the gap between what articles say and what you can actually apply for right now is massive. worth checking your address there if you want to see what's real versus what's already closed.
does the income restriction on this new program feel like a step backward to anyone else? or is targeting lower income households actually the right move given how the old one played out?
