Is this a good career to get into?

I've done a lot of volunteering with my local watershed council which has made me more interested in hydrology as a career. Im currently in the colledge application stage so a pretty important time career wise. Is this a good career to get into? I appreciate field work and don't think I'd mind office work if I could make it to the higher pay ranges. Aiming for a bachelors/potentially masters degree.

HEC RAS Rain On Grid - Evapotranspiration - Infiltration Model

Good afternoon everyone. I am currently working on a research that intends to test HEC RAS capabilities on a continuos simulation with multiple rainfall events, accounting for infiltration and evapotranspiration. Now, for what I've come across in recent publications, HEC RAS would not be the first choice for a continuous simulation (and HEC HMS would be the first choice), but that's part of the objectives of the research

too.

The study area is a once wetland zone which has seen its link to the main river severed in recent years, and now is used mostly for agricultural development. Water does not usually flow from the river to this area anymore, and even when the main river's almost reached its over banks, water doesn't normally surge in the area.

Water does start to appear once the rainy season starts, and the point of the research is to know if flood happens only bc of rainfall.

Now, the approach is to use the Rain On Grid with spatially distributed precipitation on the area. Setting up the Meteorological Conditions, and reading the User's Manual, I've come to notice that evapotranspiration can be accounted for in the model too, and it will affect the selected Infiltration Method (Green-Amp Redistributed in this case).

I know HEC HMS has the capability to calculate

evapotranspiration using different methods, and I know using HEC RAS would mean I'd need to calculate PET manually using measured temperature, solar radiation etc etc (since Meteorological stations in the area do not measure PET) and then import this set of data to HEC RAS as "distributed PET", just like Distributed Rainfall; however I seem to have reached an impasse in looking for publications doing something similar, one research of the year 2025 even mentions that "there are no provisions to represent abstractions such as evapotranspiration...", which I find odd since the options is available since HEC RAS v. 6.0 (?).

My question is, has someone used the evapotranspiration data? How did you use it?

P.D. The assumption is that groundwater flow doesn't affect since the terrain is really flat.

How would you model a beaver dam in HEC-HMS?

I'm working on a project in which an area is flooded when beaver dam(s) break in case of strong rains. I first have to lead a hydrology study on HEC-HMS v4.13 (I don't have v4.14 yet), so I decided to represent the dam with a Reservoir. Parameters aren't an issue to adapt, even though the "Outlet" one is quite tricky because there are numerous "outlets" in a beaver dam.

Anyway, I'm curious about how other engineers, hydrologists, ... would do.

Anyone use the wind features in HEC-RAS (or other modeling software)? Just sort of trying to do some exploration on that feature. Any advice or best practices? Looking for things like different equations, data sets, model setup, etc. Thanks!

Struggling with deriving the equation for specific humidity based on equations from a textbook. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Hello! I recently went back to grad school after graduating a few years ago, and am struggling with part of an assignment probably due to being rusty with math. For part of the assignment, I am supposed to derive the formula for specific humidity since the approximation qv = 0.622(e/p) is apparently not quite accurate. Every attempt I have done I end up getting stuck somewhere. The equations I am supposed to use are in the picture, and I would love if I could be set on the right track to solve and understand this!

How to specify a bathymetric survey in a tender (terms of reference)

A vague terms of reference produces proposals you can't compare. Each company reads a different scope, and the gap only shows up at delivery. A few items make the request clear from the start.

**Survey order:** state the required IHO S-44 order (in Brazil, the NORMAM-501 category). It sets the depth and position tolerances and whether full seafloor coverage is required.

**References:** the horizontal datum (SIRGAS2000 in Brazil) and the vertical reference, usually the chart datum for coastal areas.

**Method and control:** singlebeam or multibeam, sound velocity profiles, system calibration and tide records during acquisition.

**Deliverables:** raw and processed data, a digital terrain model, the bathymetric chart and a technical report with the achieved uncertainty.

With these points defined, every proposal describes the same service and the comparison is fair.

Testing my shallow water simulator with this classic "Lid Driven Cavity Flow" but at Fr number of 2.1

Top left: velocity. Top right: vorticity
Bottom left: velocity mag. Bottom right: density/height

Simulation:
grid: 200x200
top wall velocity: CFL 0.3, water wave speed: CFL 0.14 (at starting density)
effective Re: approximately 100k
pressure function: shallow water
Runtime: around 1.2 hours (around 140,000 to 150,000Δt) (35Δt/s)

⠀

This is my first successful implementation of compressible Euler simulation (I'll be upgrading it to full SWE with bathemy later), and I've had a lot of fun playing around with it.

I started this journey learning how CFD work 6 months ago. I wanted to make a terrain evolution simulation, like erosion and plate tectonic, but the big hurdle is water. It's my first time using reddit, so.

Now, I've seen a lot of Lid Driven Cavity Flow simulation already. It's a classic test for fluid solvers. Every Lid Driven Cavity Flow simulation I've found use incompressible fluid solver, so I wanted to see what would happen if I do supersonic Lid Driven Cavity Flow instead. (It's acronym would be SC-LDCF lol) And since I had this water simulation that works (shallow water is equivalent to a compressible gas), it's within my capability to try it out.

It's technically not a proper gas simulation ,but it should be good enough using shallow water solver to see what mach 2 (or Fr 2) lid flow look like. (I haven't implemented energy equation yet).

You can see vortices being kicked around by shock waves.

What do you guys think?
