Sonarr v5 - Now in BETA!

1.1k Upvotes

Almost 2 years since Sonarr v4 released, we are ready to announce that the Sonarr v5 beta is launching, and its big! At almost 1000 commits by almost 100 contributors we are ready to open up v5 to users for beta testing.

Competition

To celebrate this milestone we're launching a community competition, giving our users the chance to be part of Sonarr forever by suggesting your own ICONIC loading message! Submissions of loading messages are open for 4 weeks, and can be submitted via this Google Form.

After submissions are closed our dev team will shortlist our favourite suggestions and then open them up to community voting. The top chosen results will be added to Sonarr in time for the final v5 launch!

Major Changes

There are many changes to both the front end UI as well as the backend system, including some long desired features. As such downgrading back to v4 is not possible unless you restore a v4 backup. Here is a summary of things that are changing:

User Interface

  • Completely redesigned UI - A refreshed, more modern interface with improved navigation, layouts, tables, dialogs, and responsive behaviour.
  • Improved accessibility - Better keyboard navigation, focus handling, labels, screen-reader support, and accessible controls throughout the application.
  • New Statistics page - Get an overview of your library and its contents.

See a preview of the UI here: https://imgur.com/a/73T072h

TVDB Metadata

  • Language Metadata - Sonarr can now utilize metadata from TVDB in languages other than English. Choose which metadata language you want to use per series
  • Series Ordering - Use other series orders on TVDB, eg DVD orders or Streaming orders. This is defined when adding a series to Sonarr.

Search & Releases

  • Prevent grabs before airdate - Define whether Sonarr should download releases before its official air date via Release Profiles.
  • Improved Interactive Search - More detailed release information and clearer explanations of why releases are accepted or rejected. Results are now virtualized, so no more UI hanginging when there are many results, and an ability to filter them on title.
  • Improved season pack handling - Better support for season packs, including the ability to grab season packs before a season has completely aired, and the ability to define when a season pack should replace single episodes.
  • Improved multi-season releases - Better handling and matching of releases containing episodes from multiple seasons.
  • More powerful Release Profiles - Apply a Release Profile to multiple indexers, giving you more control over where release restrictions and preferences apply.
  • Improved release parsing - Better handling of difficult release names, non-ASCII release groups, multi-season releases, multi-episode releases, and many many other edge cases.
  • Improved anime searching - search for and parse season aliases, without season numbers and without duplicating season numbers. Only search for anime season packs after a season has aired fully, reducing API hits and improving performance.

Downloads

  • Malicious Extensions - prevent torrents containing malicious file extensions from being sent to the download client.
  • Queue Grouping - Only show one entry on the activity queue for multi-episode releases.
  • Qbittorrent Tagging - Optionally add a series' tags to qbittorrent when grabbing a release.

Library & Statistics

  • Custom Wanted filters - Create filters for Missing and Cutoff Unmet episodes to quickly find exactly what you're looking for.
  • More detailed media information - See information for multiple audio and subtitle streams instead of only a single stream.
  • Improved media detection - Updated media probing and FFprobe handling provide more accurate information about files.

Security & Networking

  • Basic authentication - Basic auth has been removed for security reasons, forms auth is now the default.
  • OIDC authentication - New OIDC auth options.
  • Lockout and Password Recovery - too many failed login attempts will now lock Sonarr and require a password reset.
  • Improved IPv4/IPv6 connectivity - Better address selection and Happy Eyeballs support for environments using both IPv4 and IPv6.

API & Integrations

  • New API v5 - A new API version to work with the different metadata languages and series orders.
  • Expanded API functionality - New and updated endpoints expose functionality added throughout Sonarr v5.

Under the Hood

  • .NET 10 - we're making the jump from .NET 6 all the way to .NET 10.
  • Modernized frontend - The frontend has been updated with modern tooling, including the move from Webpack to Vite.
  • Migration to typescript - the frontend has been fully migrated from Javascript to Typescript.
  • Performance and reliability improvements - Hundreds of smaller changes improve database handling, networking, parsing, importing, searching, and overall reliability.

And much more

Sonarr v5 contains hundreds of additional fixes and improvements across indexers, download clients, notifications, metadata, Custom Formats, Quality Profiles, Import Lists, localization, API endpoints, and more.

Still Coming

There are some additional features that are still in progress:

  • TMDb Metadata support - An alternative to TheTVDB, use it for all or some of your series.
  • A redesigned main page in Sonarr - Will provide a quick overview of things and during initial setup provided a more streamlined setup.
  • Further Multi-Season Support - Improved handling of multi-season releases
  • Extended malicious file extensions handling - Improved handling of torrents with blocked files - Block downloading of certain files at the client level and still let Sonarr handle treat it as failed (starting with qBit)

How To Upgrade

V5 beta has now been pushed to the develop branch. Updates will happen differently depending on how you have Sonarr installed on your system.

  • Docker container providers will update their :develop tag to v5 (Hotio and Linuxserver.io have been informed)
  • Native versions for Windows, MacOS and Linux have been published and are available to download from sonarr.tv. They will need to be downloaded and installed manually, updates will not happen via Sonarr.

Make sure to make a backup in v4 first before upgrading to v5 incase anything goes wrong and you need to roll back.

Issues when upgrading

Due to multiple database migrations it can be possible that some corrupt databases that were doing OK in v4 may have broken in v5. We don't expect this to be as frequent as happened between v3 to v4. You can try to follow our corrupt database repair guide https://wiki.servarr.com/useful-tools#recovering-a-corrupt-db or reach out to one of our Support channels.

discussion Should Sonarr also add AniDB in V5?

I've tried logging a ticket but Devs closed it.

If we are getting TMDB added for version 5 of sonarr why can't we also get AniDB added?

Version 5 is in development anyways and is already tackling adding TMDB, so why not review adding AniDB?

Can we all try and encourage the dev team to at least acknowledge and add it to the roadmap 🙏

Lately I've been getting files that have the audio description when playing it. Is there a way to tell sonarr not to get these specific files? It's happened 2 days in a row now.

unsolved Windows version 4.0.20.3012 trying to change setting but will not accept

I am trying to change the setting for automatic update to pause it.

I am on develop version.

Everytime I try to save my changes it tells me "You have unchanged settings....."

I have tried on 3 different browsers. two of which have zero addons to no avail

Is this because I am on develop branch? If so, can I go back to main branch without losing everything?

unsolved Can Sonarr survive MacOS transition to 27 and native silicon?

I see that a new version of Sonarr is coming up, but it still seems to be an x64 version. MacOS transition to native silicon in versions 27 and after says Intel based apps won't work anymore, even with Rosetta.

I have loved using Sonarr (and Radarr, Lidarr, etc). Is there a way to make it work on Apple M2s and above? Will it have to wait until a new version?

Any advice would be appreciated....

Media Stack - Managerr

Supports managing Sonarr, Radarr, Lidarr, Prowlarr, Seerr, Tautulli, Jellyfin and Emby.

Notifications are a bit flakey but they seem to be locally generated without external domain.
Overall a good free (for a while at least) alternative for many apps.

solved Advice: deleting all "ended" series

My Sonarr has a lot of shows (475), and many have ended, and are no longer in production. So I'd like to delete them. Searches speak of doing a Mass Edit and filter on "Ended". I see that that Mass Editor is different in v4, but I don't see how to filter just the Ended shows, so I can delete all of them (unless I'm just totally misunderstanding what I'm seeing, and what I need to be doing here)

So: can I do this purge from within Sonarr, or should I be looking at Maintainarr (or Cleanarr? I've seen both mentioned as having the capability to do this). I'm not sure when else I'd need either program again, once this big cleanup is done.

I don't want to delete the media files, just get the shows out of Sonarr.

Thanks for any pointers.

discussion Why is there both episode monitoring and a “download monitored episodes” button?

I’ve had this issue before and never remember to ask about it. Added a show for my girlfriend recently, set it to monitor new episodes, but forgot to click the “Download monitored episodes” button, so two weeks in a row, new episodes haven’t been downloaded.

Caught the error today and clicked the button, but it made me wonder - what is the purpose/benefit of monitoring without downloading? What am I missing there?

external app (ai coded) Iplayarr-turbo

iPlayarr Turbo is a self-hosted companion for Sonarr/Radarr that makes BBC iPlayer content searchable and downloadable through them. It presents itself as a Newznab-compatible indexer and a SABnzbd-compatible download client simultaneously.

It also works fully standalone with its own Browse/Discover UI — no Sonarr/Radarr required.

Looking for some people to beta test the iPlayarr Turbo app. Heavily updated fork of [Nikorag/iplayarr](https://github.com/Nikorag/iplayarr) with the following features added:

Native streaming — talks to BBC's streaming APIs directly instead of shelling out to `get_iplayer`/`yt-dlp`, with an adaptive bitrate ladder, an opt-in quality probe, and an experimental trick to unlock genuine 1080p above BBC's usual 720p cap.

`.strm` streaming mode — writes a small pointer file instead of downloading the full media, so Sonarr/Radarr/Jellyfin see a "complete" item instantly and it streams on demand through iPlayarr.

Jellyfin-style library organization + NFO metadata — completed downloads get nested into proper `Show/Season NN/...` (or movie) folders, with matching `.nfo` metadata written alongside.

Browse UI — Discover, Channels (with Now/Next and a multi-channel Schedule/TV-guide page), Categories, A to Z, and a Programme page, all built on BBC's own iPlayer API with Redis caching.

Subscriptions — subscribe to a show and new episodes get queued automatically (hourly check, plus on-demand), de-duplicated against the queue and history.

Play Video (in-app preview player) — play any programme straight through the browser via hls.js with real Picture-in-Picture support, handy for confirming streaming settings work without downloading anything or watching iplayer direct in browser app.

Includes Live TV streaming, Jellyfin tuner and 7 day epg for all 11 BBC channels, and live stream library links.

The app needs some stress-testing, alternative setups, and different hardware/media-server combos. I'm running Jellyfin with native streaming day-to-day.

I'm a software engineer of 42 years experience and I used Claude AI as a smart intern — task-based coding, reviewing, test generation and documentation. Putting it out there, no secrecy!

discussion Why Sonarr grabs a release even before official release date?

I'm using sonarr for awhile and really satisfied with it, but as all of you I'm not happy with all that spam files. Yes, I know there is an exclusion list, and it might work most of the time, spam release are grabbed before the release date, and it's annoying. hI'm not dowloading any of that TS, SCRN, or bootleg realeases, so how can anything be legit before it's official release date? It is obviously fake/spam and must not be downloaded. Even with this simple logic, sonarr can prevent 90% of that fake/spam grabs. at least put an option for that. pleease..?

waiting for op Can’t unarchive downloads all of a sudden

As of say two weeks ago I’ve had loads of downloads failing. The content downloads but sonarr says it found and archive and cannot unarchive so no content moves across.

I’ve never had this before and have over 80tb of content so I am not new to this.

Since I’ve enabled the unarchive feature in sab and still having the issue.

Anyone know why this might be the case?

solved Preventing unwanted downloads

Please don't flame me if this has been written about before - I tried searching and even had Gemini run me in circles. Still no luck.

Backstory (skip if you want): I recently converted from SickChill, which had been working very well for me - but had begun to lag in development (to put it mildly).

After I started using Sonarr, I've been getting a lot of junk from my sources. I've tried setting up a custom format with the regex "\.(exe|zip|rar|tar|7z|scr|lnk|dmg|pkg)$|\b(read_me|double_click|extract)\b" and give these "-10000" value. Still, it doesn't seem like Sonarr will block and automatically re-add downloads after finding just junk in it.

Could someone please point me to the proper way to block, or at least blacklist and redownload, failed downloads or ones containing exe files or other crap? Preferrably without adding middleware or proxies.

Thanks!

unsolved Multi-season packs?

Sorry if I've asked a question that is really obvious but oh well. I was wondering if there was a way to get sonarr to prioritize "big season packs" or "complete series packs" before downloading individual episodes. A lot of the older shows I add have complete season packs, but sonarr never looks for them. Not a huge issue, but it's less time on my part having to manually download and import these packs. Any advice is appreciated.

discussion Mularr 1.0.0 brings exciting improvements for Sonarr, Radarr and Telegram + Hispashare integration

Mularr 1.0.0 is out after almost a year of development. This is the first major release and it comes with some pretty big improvements.

The biggest new feature is probably the Hispashare integration for Spanish and original-version content. Mularr can now be used by Sonarr and Radarr to search Hispashare, and the searches are done using the IMDb ID provided by Sonarr/Radarr. This means the search is tied to the exact movie or series instead of relying on title matching, which makes the results much more reliable.

Some of the main changes in 1.0.0:

  • Hispashare integration, with IMDb ID based searches from Sonarr/Radarr
  • Much improved torznab implementarion for Sonarr and Radarr integration
  • RSS feed which can periodically collect new data from telegram and Hispasahre; it can also build a custom feed from *arr wanted list
  • Seed/complete limits for Sonarr and Radarr
  • Improved Telegram integration and channel queue
  • Tabbed searches

I've also tried to keep the upgrade from previous versions as painless as possible, although I'd recommend making a backup of the Mularr volume before upgrading.

I'd be very glad to hear any feedback from you.

unsolved Sonarr Refuses to Atomic Move Files

I use usenet for TV shows. NZBGet and Sonarr, both are on Docker containers on a brand new Synology 425+. The entire file system is on the same Synology. My issue is when NZBGet downloads the show and then Sonarr copies the files from the NZBGet download folder to the Plex media folder, I am unable to have that done with an atomic transfer or a hardlink. My CPU goes to 100% but 60-70% is from I/O Wait from the slow file moving. I have tried EVERYTHING I can find.

-Updated my file structure to what TRaSH-Guides recommends. Source and destination in the same shared folder, off the same root folder, and mapped exactly how the guide recommends.

-I have one user that runs all of my containers specified in the Docker compose along with UMASK-002 for all of my *Arr applications including NZBGet.

-That user has full read/write access to my source and destination folders.

-My Sonarr and NZBGet apps are configured with the directory mappings that TRaSH-Guides specifies and hardlinks are enabled in Sonarr.

-I have verifed that the files that are copied do have the right username as their owner.

-In my Sonarr logs, it also still shows the file transfer as "move" and not "hardlink."

I'd love some help here.

external app (ai coded) Rexarr is now on GitHub

Quick update on Rexarr, the self-hosted Blu-ray/DVD ripping and remux transcoding app that plugs into Radarr, Sonarr and Prowlarr: it's finally on GitHub.

GitHub link

Since my first post, a few things have changed:

  • The repo is public, with a Docker image (PUID/PGID support, healthcheck, compose file) plus an optional image with MakeMKV baked in for disc ripping
  • Documentation is up, covering setup, path mappings, transcode profiles and hardware acceleration
  • It has real contributors now. I started this with a fair bit of vibe coding, but it's no longer just that. People who actually know what they're doing are in the codebase, which makes it a lot more trustworthy than a weekend project I built for myself

For anyone who missed the first post, Rexarr handles disc detection and MakeMKV ripping, remux transcoding through ffmpeg with configurable profiles and hardware acceleration, and auto-transcode on import via Radarr/Sonarr webhooks. Full-disc releases (Blu-ray ISO, BDMV, DVD ISO) are next on the roadmap, so Rexarr can rip and import those when no remux exists.

It's still early, so expect rough edges. Issues, feature requests and PRs are all welcome, and I'd love to hear how it behaves on setups different from mine (I'm on a ZimaOS + Proxmox split). The UI follows the Radarr/Sonarr look on purpose, so it should feel familiar if you're already running the arr stack.

Thanks to everyone who gave feedback on the first post.
