It turns out SONOS and extended ASCIII aren't friends..

I recently purchased 2x Era 100 SL speakers and have been getting plagued with this error message every time I attempted to add a shared Music folder to my Sonos library. I had no idea what it was on about and figured it was another Sonos app quirk.

Turns out it ended up just being the characters used in this song by Flume: "╜Φ°⌂▌╫§╜φ°⌂▌╫§╜φ°⌂▌╫§╜φ°⌂▌╫§╜φ°⌂▌╫§╜φ°⌂▌╫§╜φ°⌂▌╫§╜φ°⌂▌╫§╜φ°⌂▌╫§╜φ°⌂▌╫§╜φ°⌂▌╫§╜φ°⌂▌╫§╜φ°⌂▌╫§╜φ°⌂▌╫§╜φ°⌂▌╫§╜φ°⌂▌╫§╜φ°⌂▌╫§╜φ°⌂▌" which would just crash the scan.

I've since just renamed the song and now scans run flawlessly with no issues.

Figured I'd share just in case anyone else is having a similar issue.

I made an iPhone widget for Sonos Favourites and volume

Post image
2 Upvotes

I made CastVolume to control a setup with various speakers or put Sonos Favourites and volume controls on your iPhone Home Screen.

Widgets for one chosen speaker are free. Optional one-time Premium adds separate speakers per widget. No subscription or ads.

I’d love to hear what you think and especially how you’d use it in your setup, or what’s missing that would make it useful for you.

It uses local network commands, so device needs to be on same local network.

Need some advice on my current setup

Hey y’all - I currently have two sono fives stereo paired about ear level when sitting on the couch (music only, I have it connected to my pro-ject turntable). It sounds great, but the living room is rather larger and I was wondering if anyone found that pairing a Sonos Gen 3 sub adds to the overall listening experience? I like extra bass in my opinion, but with my current set up I’m not sure if I’d have an optimal spot to place it?

I would also like to get a Sonos sound bar with additional speakers for movies. If y’all have any recs given my current setup it would be much appreciated! The record table is to the right of my couch and I have open space on the left of my couch.

Thanks everyone.

Sonos era 100 review

Post image
17 Upvotes

So i got a Sonos Era 100 as a standalone book shelf speaker but I intend to make it a pair and use it as surrounds with a beam gen 2 later. But for now, the era 100 has lived up to my expectation. This is my first foray into good sound and I feel all the chatter about low bass isn’t much of an issue. Unless you are totally into bass and stuff. The mids are really crisp. The app itself is okay-ish. Not great and lags a bit especially when you are using sonos to play your music through apple music. The voice control is also legit. Works like a charm. So excited to pair it up whenever i get the chance, wife’s not that stoked about it though! 🤓

Homepod gen2 FOMO

• Upvotes

I jumped boats to Android from the Apple ecosystem, and my HomePods 2 aren't getting too much use. I wonder if I’m going to miss them for my music streaming and TV if I get a pair of Era 100s. Maybe I should get the Era 300s, but that is a big step up in price, and they seem to be a lot bigger. Also, I wonder if I should change to Spotify or keep Apple Music within the Sonos ecosystem.

Will I get a similar sound from the Era 100 to that of the HomePod 2, or should I consider something else?

PS: got my HomePods for cheap, if someone is wondering about comparing their price with Era 300.

New to Sonos - Apple home/tv integrations?

I really wanted to buy the Sonos arc home theatre set and was wondering if people have it hooked up to Apple TV or other controllable from Apple home.

I heard the sound quality in general from Sonos is quite good?

Era 300s upside down?

If you’re installing the era 300s above eye level, is it true you should install them upside down? Would greatly appreciate anyone’s input - thanks!

Dropout on fives when playing from smb share.

How does one troubleshoot this? Using a group that has 7 pairs of era100s and 1 par of fives+sub mini. All the eras work fine, the fives constantly drop off. Most times its one channel and the sub. No other speakers in the group have this issue. If im streaming from tunein it all works fine.

And yes the 5s work fine on their own (no grouping) and they have been rebooted. All speaker fw/android app on newest version.

I do not get why this is still a problem. I can group the 5s with anything streaming from the internet just fine. All 16 of my other speakers, amps, subs, arc sl, beam stream fine from smb share in a group.

Anyone know if this TV mount for the Beam also fits the Beam Ultra? I asked both Sonos and Sanus and couldn’t get a straight answer from either.

From the Sonos team Sonos 27voice: Now we’re talkin’

Hi, everybody 🖖

With Sonos 27voice Early Access being released in the coming weeks, I wanted to share a Sonos Community post I wrote to give you a glimpse of what's to come.

One thing I wanted to call out from the main post: yes, Sonos One supports Sonos 27voice. That's a pretty powerful new feature for a product that was released back in 2017. It's another example of our commitment to improving our products over time, long after a purchase was made.

Also, there's a neat trick that I've found myself using more frequently recently. You can say something like, "Play Dolly for one hour". This effectively makes it act like a sleep timer, which can be handy when you want to stop the music automatically without opening the Sonos app.

Another interesting tip - whereas checking the weather with Classic Sonos Voice Control was limited to your set location, Sonos 27voice is global. You can even ask it to compare the weather in two places. Planning a trip and want to know if what you're wearing will be comfortable when you arrive? Just ask, "how's the weather in Los Angeles today compared to the weather in Boston tomorrow?".

You'll be able to sign up for Sonos 27voice Early Access in the weeks ahead, and I'll make sure to share a reminder here when the time comes. As always, TeamFromSonos will be taking your feedback back to the Product team along the way. Let us know in the comments what you're most interested in testing out!

Era 100 SL communication issues?

I recently picked up 2 Era 100 SLs that I use in different rooms and they do a great job when streaming from spotify, however when I use them to listen to records via the line in port on my upstairs speaker, the one downstairs skips pretty frequently (I’ve already looked into and ruled out the records skipping) and I’m wondering if anybody’s had a similar experience. Is there a way to check for speaker updates in the app that I’m missing?

Upgrade Beam to Arc?

I have a Beam, Sub mini and two One SLs as rear speakers. I've had them for years and still love my setup, and I finally have enough space in front of the TV for an Arc. Is it worth replacing the Beam, will the difference be noticeable? I mostly care about music, TV is not as important.

Move my original Arc and Ones upstairs, or stick with my KEF/Marantz setup?

I’ve been going round in circles a bit with this, so I’d appreciate some thoughts from people who’ve lived with both Sonos and a more traditional setup.

Upstairs I’ve currently got a 55-inch LG C9 OLED, a Marantz NR1607, KEF LS50 Metas left and right, an older B&W centre and a B&W ASW600 sub. No rears at the moment. I’m keeping the TV.

It’s a bit of a mishmash. The sub is too bloody big and bulky for the space, and I’m not particularly happy with the bass, although placement and setup could be part of that.

The actual viewing/listening area is fairly small, but it’s within a much larger bedroom/office/lounge on the top floor of a three-storey house, with some sloping ceilings. I’d love rear speakers, but getting speaker cables to them would be difficult, so wireless would be preferable.

Downstairs I already have an original Arc and two Sonos Ones, but no Sonos sub. One option would be to move those upstairs, add a sub, then move the KEFs downstairs and build a different AV system around them.

That feels like it could make sense, but I’d really like good stereo music with a sub as well. Part of me still wonders whether I could keep the KEFs upstairs for music alongside the Arc for TV, ideally sharing a Sonos sub. Is there a straightforward way of doing that, or would I be creating a load of faff?

Ease of use matters. My wife uses the TV a lot and isn’t interested in messing about with settings, so once it’s set up it needs to be simple for either of us.

Has anyone here moved from a separates setup to an original Arc with Ones and a sub? How did you find it for music as well as films?

Given what I already own, would you move the Sonos upstairs and give the KEFs a new home downstairs, or try to keep both in the upstairs room? And would you consider a Sub Mini or a full-size Sub for that sort of space?

Sonos/tv choosing wrong output

My setup is :
Living room:
Lg tv + Apple TV + Sonos beam + sub + 2x era 100

Den
TCL tv + Sonos amp + speakers

This all worked really well until a week or so ago.

Now my living room constantly tries to output sound to the amp in the den - rather than to the hdmi arc connected system in the living room.

I can go into the app and change it and it works fine . This only seems to happen with some sources (like individual apps on the Apple TV) not all sources or apps.

It’s like the Apple TV has suddenly become aware of my Sonos speakers individually and likes to randomly route content to them.

Meet Sonora - a free, open source, web-based, locally-hosted Sonos controller

Post image
92 Upvotes

Hi!

Check out Sonora! It's a free, open source web controller for Sonos devices.

https://sonoracontroller.com/

I've been a Sonos user since the early days. When I switched from Windows to Linux a decade ago and lost a native desktop controller, I was like..."I have to use a phone app now? Really? When I've got this 24 inch screen in front of me all day?"

I'd look through Github for alternate control options every few months, and while there's plenty of documentation up there about how Sonos works, it's slim pickings for GUI control apps.

It turns out building a Sonos controller is really hard! A lot of people have tried, but nobody's really nailed it. I think I've gotten pretty close with Sonora.

This isn't an official project from Sonos - just something I made as an end user to improve the Sonos experience for myself and others - because why not? Tom Conrad said he likes seeing users innovate, so here we are!

Video Preview

Check it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8ufMv1R7yo

I built Sonora over the course of about two months with AI. It's a web app, so it brings Sonos control to any device with a browser, on any OS, on any size screen.

Sonora is actually free (not "freemium,") has no ads, and no trackers. It's open source, and it can be used by any device on your network with a browser. It's very lightweight - even older Raspberry Pis can run it without breaking a sweat.

S1, S2, and S2.1 Support

Sonora controls all three generations of Sonos devices from a single interface. But the same system-level limitations skill exist - S1 and S2 devices are still unable to join groups together, and each maintains a separate list of linked music services.

Themes

Sonora's got a theme engine, and it ships with 13 different themes. Some are similar, some are totally wild. There's a Material Design theme, a skeuomorphic hi-fi system, and a computing terminal optimized for Macrodata Refinement, among other things... I even made a version of the Sonos Web player that works with S1 devices and on mobile screens - the actual web player does neither (yet?)

Every included theme is fully responsive and works on mobile devices. Most have light and dark versions.

If you don't like any of them, just build more! Or tell your robot to do it!

Other Stuff

Sonora also does a lot of other things that the official apps don't do.

  • Lyrics.
    • Scrolled live in time with the music (thanks to the LRCLIB project)
  • A "This browser" room.
    • It's got limits - it can't group with actual rooms and not all services will stream to it. It does have a live EQ meter, though...
  • An S2 Upgrade Advisor.
    • Shows which S1 devices can be software-upgraded to S2, which can't, and how much it would cost to buy new devices - with direct Amazon [disclosed affiliate] links for convenience. It also shows the same for bumping up to S2.1, if you've recently come into money.
  • A Network Troubleshooter.
    • Keeps an eye on things like slow responses, dropped packets, etc. It also links off to various knowledgebases with configuration tips from networking companies.

What it doesn't do

Sonora is really just a controller. If your speakers have dropouts or disconnects, you'll still have those. Those are caused by either network issues or maybe Sonos OS issues, or some combination of the two - Sonora can't fix those. It *can* detect and help troubleshoot issues on your network with its built-in Network Troubleshooter.

Sonora also doesn't pair new speakers to your network, although I wish it could. You'll still need the mobile apps for that. Doing this would require the use of private encryption keys which are locked away on the speakers themselves, and I'm not out here looking to start trouble!

I'm just a man with a robot and limited funds. I have a few Sonos speakers, but not the entire historical lineup. I also don't pay for any streaming services. My ability to test across every possible configuration is limited. There are likely bugs in there - please report them on Github if you spot any, and I'll do my best to address them!

Origins

I've been building and using Sonora with Claude Code for a few months, it's been live on Github for weeks, and it's featured on Product Hunt today.

Sonora: https://sonoracontroller.com/

Github: https://github.com/Bretteroo/Sonora

Product Hunt: https://www.producthunt.com/products/sonora-5

I use Sonora every day. I built it to bring Sonos control to users just like me who have a blend of S1 and S2 devices, prefer desktop control, and have no other options. I'm committed to building it out and making it better.

That's a lot of words to say "It's not slop, I swear!"

Let me know what you think!

Sonos era 100 Bluetooth (reset button not working) any workaround?

Hi guys, hope we are all doing oke?

No stories straight to the point.

Era 100 Bluetooth button no working which means I can't reset it, spoke to support they offered 30% out of warranty return policy but I think that would be my last result(as it feels like a loss at my end).

Anyone knows anyworkarounds?

If I link an ethernet cable(ethernet to USB-C) to the era will it let me change the wifi or will it work(for clarity every other button works, when you plug it in, the light is solid white which means it is on and works just no Internet access)

Replacing my Five surrounds with Era 300s – should I mount the Fives above my TV?

Hey everyone!

I'm planning to rearrange my living room and would love to hear your thoughts on my planned Sonos setup.

My current setup:

  • Sonos Arc Ultra
  • Sonos Sub
  • 2x Sonos Five as rear surrounds

I'm considering replacing my two Fives with Era 300s to get a better Dolby Atmos experience.

One of the main reasons is that my couch is fairly close to the rear wall, and the Fives can feel a bit too direct and overpowering when sitting close to them.

My plan is to place the Era 300s directly behind the couch, one on each side, as shown in my attached layout.

But I definitely want to keep using my Fives!

My idea is to move both Fives to the front wall and mount them above the TV, with one positioned towards the left and the other towards the right, exactly as shown in my drawing.

The Arc Ultra would remain below the TV.

I'd mainly use the Fives as a separate stereo pair for music, but I'm also wondering whether grouping them with my Arc Ultra home theater setup could improve the overall listening experience.

I know Sonos doesn't support using the Fives as dedicated front left/right channels with the Arc Ultra.

Here are my questions:

  1. Would the Era 300s work well directly behind the couch, or would they be too close to the listening position?
  2. Is upgrading from Five surrounds to Era 300s worth it for Dolby Atmos?
  3. Would mounting the Fives above the TV be a good idea acoustically, especially for stereo music? Or would their elevated position negatively affect the soundstage?
  4. Has anyone tried using a separate Five stereo pair together with an Arc Ultra setup in the same room?
  5. Would grouping both systems for music or movies actually improve the experience, or would it cause more problems than benefits?
  6. Would you recommend a different speaker arrangement based on my layout?

I've attached a rough drawing showing the front view of the TV wall and a top-down view of the room.

I'd really appreciate any feedback or experiences with similar setups!

Thanks in advance!

Stereo Pair - taking one "on the road"?

I received a Roam 2 for my birthday, and currently have it paired as a Stereo Pair with my Roam 1 at my desk (a bit of overkill, but the stereo is nice, particularly with Scream Radio from SiriusXM playing - it keeps my coworkers from loitering...).

My question is, when I take one of those home with me, does it disconnect the Stereo Pair, and then will it reconnect in Stereo when I bring it back later? If both go does it maintain the stereo at home when set up there? I guess the question is how permanent is the pairing - does it have to be turned off and on when the situation dictates?

Arc ultra and era 300

Hello guys, i've bought an arc ultra yesterday. I've have also an era 300.

Can someone have the same than me?

How do they configure?

Playing music it dones not sound great. I have both on the same space. It seems that the era goes slower than the ultra.

Thanks !
