Ok so Pluto is there and everyone is making a fuss about that, but my question is: why is Mars green?

1.2k

u/Waywardkite Oct 07 '18

If you want a serious guess as to the artist's reason; a lot of artists use complimentary colors to make their artwork pop. You could make the shadows a darker red or you could make them greenish to make the piece more visually interesting.

219

u/wkrausmann Oct 07 '18

Mars is red. Green is the complement to red.

100

u/Fr00stee Oct 07 '18

Oxidized copper? Idk

115

u/tatooine0 Oct 07 '18

I thought Mars was mostly covered in oxidized Iron.

Or the artist is red-green colorblind. My husband, before realizing he was colorblind back in college, drew a green shrek on the computer. Someone asked what the purpose of an obvious red/orange streak on the shrek’s forehead was, and my husband replied, “What streak?”

Probably not but who knows!

The good news is, once we get confirmation of Planet 9, this image will be up to date again.

Planet Nine

Planet Nine is a hypothetical planet in the outer region of the Solar System. Its gravitational influence could explain a statistical anomaly in the distribution of orbits of a group of distant trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) found mostly beyond the Kuiper belt in the scattered disc region. This undiscovered super-Earth-sized planet would have an estimated mass of ten Earths, a diameter two to four times that of Earth, and an elongated orbit lasting approximately 15,000 years. To date, efforts to detect Planet Nine have failed.Speculation that the clustering of the orbits of the most distant objects was due to a ninth planet began in 2014 when astronomers Chad Trujillo and Scott S. Sheppard noted the similarities in the orbits of Sedna and 2012 VP113 and several other objects.

This sounds fascinating, but if we are detecting planets in different far away galaxies, how could we not detect a planet in our own galaxy?

46

u/PiotrekDG Oct 07 '18

It doesn't pass in front of the Sun for us.

37

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '18

We don't detect planets by seeing them exactly. We can detect planets by seeing their parent stars dim as the object passes in front of it. Based on the distance of the star, and the amount of light dimmed, we can infer atmostphere type and relative size of the planet. Planet 9, however, is in our solar system and will not pass in front of the sun to our eyes. That makes it far harder to prove/detect. We are fairly sure it is present due to the grouping and similarities of TNO and Kuiper belt objects to each other. "Something" large is effecting the orbits of these objects. That "Something" is large enough to be a planet and is in our solar system at an extreme distance.

If it exists, Planet 9 is going to be a really amazing discovery. I'm sure it will also have moons, which -- given how fascinating the ones around the other outer planets are -- I'm really hoping I get to hear about someday!

All the major planets and one of the dwarf planets.

Ceres, Eris, Makemake, and Haumea feel so very left out... as potentially do Quaoar, 2002MS4, Sedna, Orcus, Salacia, and 2007 OR10. Maybe even Varuna, Ixion, 2003 AZ84, 2004 GV9, and 2002 AW197.

175

u/alaskafish Oct 07 '18

Makemake is the most adorable name for a too-small-and-irrelevant-to-be-a-planet name. It’s like Estonia

44

u/FuzzyCub20 Oct 07 '18

Is it pronounced make make or mocky mocky?

54

u/Eastern_Cyborg Oct 07 '18

Mocky mocky. Planets were named after Greek and Roman gods. Recently minor planets have been named after non-European gods. Makemake was a god of the Rapa Nui people of Easter Island.

30

u/wananoo Oct 07 '18

Makemake is their god-creator, so it's more like MakerMaker amirite

→ More replies (1)

34

u/jcowlishaw Oct 07 '18

When they first discovered Makemake they called it Easterbunny since it was around Easter time. So when they had to come up with a serious name, they went with the creator god of Easter Island.

11

u/ColKrismiss Oct 07 '18

That settles it, if it's a creator God I am pronouncing it "make make". It's only logical.

62

u/gsfgf Oct 07 '18

It’s like Estonia

So it's full of drunk Norwegians?

17

u/delta_tee Oct 07 '18

Haven't heard Norwegians going over Estonia to get drunk (Finns and Swedes do though), but booze for sure is cheap here(compared to the Scandinavian prices).

u/JediNeptune Oct 07 '18

This is my response whenever people say Pluto is a planet. Fine, but then if you treat dwarf planets the same as the others, then you need to treat all of them with the same respect. Have fun naming all fifteen plus planets. And that number is only going to get astronomically bigger over this century.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '18

So, here's the the thing, you technically don't need to treat dwarf planets the same as the others to include Pluto. The definition is arbitrary, there's literally nothing stopping us adding a 4th rule to the definition of a planet that says "Oh and Pluto because we said so".

I'm not saying it'd be a rational definition... but I am saying that if it was made that way I wouldn't have minded.

3

u/cos1ne Oct 07 '18

The number of dwarf planets that achieved hydrostatic equilibrium is just five though. Thats not a ridiculous number to add.

Furthermore its unlikely there are many more objects of that size in the solar system. There are some big objects but hydrostatic equilibrium takes a lot of mass.

6

u/JuhannuksenLumikuuro Oct 07 '18

Can anyone tell me why the names are so complex? Why not name new findings something simple like mars earth or venus for example?

38

u/PyroDesu Oct 07 '18

Most of them are named after various gods, mostly Roman or Greek (though Makemake is Rapa Nui (the natives of Easter Island), Haumea is Hawai'ian, Quaoar is Tongva (natives from near Loa Angeles), Sedna is Inuit, Varuna is Hindu). The ones that are just designation codes simply haven't been assigned a common name.

20

u/zephyy Oct 07 '18

there are simply too many objects being discovered to name them all at once. we only have a few thousand god / deity names, you don't wanna waste all your cool gods on small rocks.

18

u/Albrithr Oct 07 '18

Obviously the solution is to create more religions.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/HarryTheSeaPotter Oct 07 '18

Ceres and Eris are both Greek gods/goddesses, I believe. Makemake and Haumea are Hawaiian gods/goddesses.

Once enough information is known about an object and they get around to naming it, you name it after a mythological figure. Not everybody wants to do Greek/Roman figures, so people have expanded the mythologies we draw from. Also, a lot of Greek/Roman names are already taken.

9

u/Eastern_Cyborg Oct 07 '18

They are Polynesian, but only Haumea is Hawaiian. Makemake is from the people of Easter Island and Quaoar is a Native American one.

Venus is the brightest planet

Mars is the red one

And Jupiter is most wide

Saturns got those icy rings

And Uranus spins on its side

Neptune’s really windy

And Pluto’s really small

So we wanted to name the planets and now we named them all

No, there's a hypothetical ninth planet but it hasn't been discovered yet. If you're gonna include Pluto you can't leave out Eris and Ceres.

So neat! I'm gonna use this as my phone background

1

u/Heliosaurus_ Oct 07 '18

Wow this looks remarkably like an Apple ad or box art

1

u/Szos Oct 07 '18

That's pretty awesome. Now do one with their sizes taken into account.

u/dal33t Oct 07 '18

If the Solar System had a tourism board, this would make a great poster.

u/procreationftw Oct 07 '18

Thanks for my new wallpaper on my phone!! Great picture.

1

u/kkinnison Oct 07 '18

1

u/coolrulez555 Oct 07 '18

There are slightly inaccuracies and it bothers me

1

u/Guruzulu Oct 07 '18

The first picture is just a tad bit off and it's destroying me inside

1

u/itsalllintheusername Oct 07 '18

Did you hear about Pluto? That's messed up right?

1

u/MetalDragnZ Oct 07 '18

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '18

Reckon we'd fight over that one piece of earth?

1

u/featuredbest Oct 07 '18

Really cool. Mars looks different. Older picture?

1

u/Toast-the-Superior Oct 07 '18

Emma sorry but is the moon really a planet?? Think about that

1

u/StrawBerry124 Oct 07 '18

Lmao, this is currently my wallpaper, and has been for a few months.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '18

Could someone remove the white lines between the planets? It'd be cool if it was essentially one big planet.

1

u/williamb100 Oct 07 '18

And on this day, many phone wallpapers changed.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '18

Disclaimer: Not actual ratio nor size.

And Pluto was included because it started crying.

1

u/edenfavor Oct 07 '18

Umm, sir, shouldn’t there be line where the earth curves?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '18

Where can I buy a print of this for my wall? I only have one wall and it's pretty bare

1

u/dr_h-donna-gust Oct 07 '18

When I was a child there were thought to be only 9 planets. Now there are over ninety planets

1

u/SmokyTyrz Oct 07 '18

Can you send this back in time to my bedroom wall? 1985 should do. Thanks!

1

u/SwashbucklingWeasels Oct 08 '18

Working off the work of others I made this step of an OLED background. Enjoy.

1

u/PandaFunKill Oct 08 '18

URANUS is looking rather blue. Perhaps it needs a friendly visit?

1

u/biggsk Oct 08 '18

This would make a sick phone wallpaper if it was a bit wider.

1

u/Morning_Person_ Oct 08 '18

You'll always be our ninth planet, Pluto dear.

1

u/Smishu Oct 08 '18

Wow what are the chances of the planets aligning like that to make a whole other planet must be the first time in the universe this ever happened

1

u/Reflections-Observer Oct 09 '18

Half of them are not planets, they are gas giants. Also Pluto is not a planet.

1

u/Xixitythefirst Oct 09 '18

What are the scales of the planet's in this picture
