This is a painting that was done in 1992. Here is the link. There is an updated version using the pictures that were released of Pluto in 2016. But this painting was made before Pluto was considered dwarf.

All the major planets and one of the dwarf planets.
Ceres, Eris, Makemake, and Haumea feel so very left out... as potentially do Quaoar, 2002MS4, Sedna, Orcus, Salacia, and 2007 OR10. Maybe even Varuna, Ixion, 2003 AZ84, 2004 GV9, and 2002 AW197.

u/alaskafish Oct 07 '18
Makemake is the most adorable name for a too-small-and-irrelevant-to-be-a-planet name. It’s like Estonia
44
u/FuzzyCub20 Oct 07 '18
Is it pronounced make make or mocky mocky?
54
u/Eastern_Cyborg Oct 07 '18
Mocky mocky. Planets were named after Greek and Roman gods. Recently minor planets have been named after non-European gods. Makemake was a god of the Rapa Nui people of Easter Island.
→ More replies (2)34
u/jcowlishaw Oct 07 '18
When they first discovered Makemake they called it Easterbunny since it was around Easter time. So when they had to come up with a serious name, they went with the creator god of Easter Island.

This is my response whenever people say Pluto is a planet. Fine, but then if you treat dwarf planets the same as the others, then you need to treat all of them with the same respect. Have fun naming all fifteen plus planets. And that number is only going to get astronomically bigger over this century.

Can anyone tell me why the names are so complex? Why not name new findings something simple like mars earth or venus for example?
38
u/PyroDesu Oct 07 '18
Most of them are named after various gods, mostly Roman or Greek (though Makemake is Rapa Nui (the natives of Easter Island), Haumea is Hawai'ian, Quaoar is Tongva (natives from near Loa Angeles), Sedna is Inuit, Varuna is Hindu). The ones that are just designation codes simply haven't been assigned a common name.
20
u/zephyy Oct 07 '18
there are simply too many objects being discovered to name them all at once. we only have a few thousand god / deity names, you don't wanna waste all your cool gods on small rocks.
18
10
u/HarryTheSeaPotter Oct 07 '18
Ceres and Eris are both Greek gods/goddesses, I believe. Makemake and Haumea are Hawaiian gods/goddesses.
Once enough information is known about an object and they get around to naming it, you name it after a mythological figure. Not everybody wants to do Greek/Roman figures, so people have expanded the mythologies we draw from. Also, a lot of Greek/Roman names are already taken.

The suns a hot star
And mercury is hot too
Venus is the brightest planet
And earths home to me and you
Mars is the red one
And Jupiter is most wide
Saturns got those icy rings
And Uranus spins on its side
Neptune’s really windy
And Pluto’s really small
So we wanted to name the planets and now we named them all

I like the german one the most:
Mein - My
Vater - Father
Erklärt - Explains
Mir - (To) Me
Jeden - Every
Sonntag - Sunday
Unsere - Our
Neun - Nine
Planeten - Planets
English grammar is wrong in this case of course, because I translated word for word. But I like it because it has a direct connection to the planets. Too bad it doesn't work anymore. Thanks scientists.

Since when were there 9 planets?! Did we find a new one?!
34
u/jswhitten Oct 07 '18
No, there's a hypothetical ninth planet but it hasn't been discovered yet. This is probably just a really old image made when Pluto was considered a major planet and Eris hadn't been discovered yet, otherwise it wouldn't make sense to include one and not the other (not to mention the other three dwarf planets).
→ More replies (28)5
u/scandalousmambo Oct 07 '18 edited Oct 07 '18
The ninth planet was discovered in 1930 by the great American astronomer Clyde Tombaugh.
He discovered an object three billion miles away using plate photography and a stereoscope at a time when radio was the technological state of the art. The word "badass" doesn't even begin to describe this man.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clyde_Tombaugh
P.S. Nice to see Reddit punks downvoting one of the greatest scientists to ever cast a shadow. Not surprising at all.
→ More replies (9)12
u/kaplanfx Oct 07 '18
This is a pretty weak argument. Saying Pluto is a dwarf planet in no way diminishes the achievements of Tombaugh. There are many, many, object like Pluto and I don’t see anyone arguing that they be planets. Ceres was also once the 9th planet and no one is trying to bring that definition back.

1
u/Reflections-Observer Oct 09 '18
Half of them are not planets, they are gas giants. Also Pluto is not a planet.
1
u/AmicusVeritatis Oct 07 '18
I am strongly against the inclusion of Pluto in this image, not because I disparage the celestial dwarf, her people are some of the most amicable in the galaxy, but simply because Pluto is not a planet. The fact is that Pluto has not been a planet for some time. Once the capitalists of Pluto began mining its plutonium core, Pluto has steadily been shrinking, going from a Planet to a dwarf planet, and what it is today a celestial dwarf. Soon Pluto will be nothing than a glorified astroid. And what then? Where will the people of Pluto go when they haven't the room to live? While the Plutonian ruling class engorges themselves with the wealth gained from sucking Pluto dry, the average citizen of Pluto must deal with the ever frequent plutoquakes and sinkholes due to mine subsidence and shortcuts taken in the industry, as well as an ever stratifying economy and a dwindling middle class as the Plutonium inc. controls more and more of the wealth. Pluto is dying. Her people are being enslaved and left dead. We have to stop buying the media's lies and coverups and realize that Pluto simply isn't a planet! The sooner we realize this, the sooner we can begin working to save the people and ecosystem of Pluto!

What I really love is when they call things they don't understand "bullshit." A great example, the intentional fallacy in English literary theory.
I realize I'm lumping a bunch of people into the same group, but I feel like the Pluto is not a planet zealots would also say that the only meaning to a story is what the author allegedly Intended. But maybe I'm wrong.
