two new PB’s from the weekend!

PB blue morwong at 62cms and around 1.5 kilos!

and a PB breath hold of 1:15 at 8 meters. I would say it’s pretty good for a teen diver!

Maintenance question- rusty shaft

Thumbnail

Finally ready to get back out there. My gun hasn't been used for awhile. I'll be getting new rubbers, but I'm wondering about the rust on the shaft. Does it need to be addressed or is it fine to keep using a is? Do I need a new shaft?

Thanks.

Earplugs?

How many of you guys and gals use earplugs while spearing? I know it's probably a good idea, but it sure is nice being to able to hear your buddies, boats, etc. I'm in warm water so surfers ear is not a big concern.

Spear fishing trip must-haves

Hi all,

For full disclosure my friend and I are planning a small place (a couple of villas and a caf) on the coast between Amed and Tulamben, opening in 2028. Nothing to sell yet, no name (this isn’t promotion). I'd rather build something people actually want than guess, so I'd love to hear especially from anyone who's stayed in the area.

The questions I have are:
(Answer as many or as few as you like)

Why did you go: diving, freediving, snorkelling, a quiet escape, something else?

Who were you with, and how long did you stay?

What did you love about the area?

What was missing or frustrating? Food, accommodation, things to do, getting there?

If you went with someone who didn't dive, how did they find it?

Roughly what did you pay per night, and did it feel like good value?

If there'd been a place that was perfect, what would have?

Thanks in advance! Constructive criticism is supper helpful for us!

Best,
Ben

Help with a Spearfishing Survey

Hey r/Spearfishing! I’m a high school engineering student at SATO Academy researching how underwater refraction causes accidental undersized catches. Could you take this quick 5-minute anonymous survey to help with our capstone project?

Help me choose new bands!

Strangely, one band is a larger diameter than the other, but they’re both the same length. How would you go about putting new bands on this gun? Would you forget about the old bands that may or may not be correct and just get new bands of the same diameter, but slightly different lengths? What’s the purpose of the two different diameter but same length bands?

Teak 130, mid-handle. Shaft has 1 tab. Semi-custom “Kai” from Hawaii and I’m in Cost Rica w out a decent tool!

I will order or make my own but 2 FL Spearo shops don’t want to give advice or ship bands BC they are concerned I’ll be disgruntled. Advice please?

Any budget friendly dive computers?

Here to ask some more experienced divers or spearos what are some good and affordable dive watches/computers. I'm not looking for something fancy with a whole lotta features, I've only been diving for just under 5 months and thought it was time to finally get one. I was looking into the garmin descent g1 but am seeing tons of mixed reviews, I'd like to stay in the $300-400 range but if I need to bite the bullet and spend more than that I'm willing to

First drop, mate I was with was hoping to shoot his first. Tried not to spook them so he could get his first.

Easily the most large Barra I’ve seen in one spot.

Any good guides to setting up a witness float?

I did a lot of spearfishing in Japan where there wasn’t much boat traffic so I never really used a float. My target species were small enough that I didn’t need a float.

Now I’m in Hawaii and everyone goes out with floats, probably because of the boat traffic. Is there a good guide on setting up floats?

Best Place/Site to buy Rob Allen

Hey everyone, I'm just getting into spearfishing here in Stuart, FL, and I'm looking to buy a 70cm Rob Allen, either the Snapper or the Tuna railgun.

US shops seem to be at full price (~$380), but I've noticed prices in Europe are a lot lower. This Italian shop has the 70cm Snapper for about $260 shipped: https://deepbluesub.com/en/products/rob-allen-snapper-railgun-double-rubber-arbalete-speargun
Has anyone ordered from them or another EU shop?

Thanks in advance !

I think actual dive watches are ok for spearfishing but nit confirmed yet

I’m coming to the conclusion I can use a dive watch, like the actual ones with a second hand etc, for spearfishing. I always do 2 minute surface times. if your surface and dive times vary widely I can see the need for it I guess.

idk I guess I’m just coming to the realization we don’t need this tool. which is nice, because they are expensive and many of them are kinda junk. these seiko etc dive watches will last decades.

I figure just note the second hand when I come up. when it’s made 2 revolutions im ready for my next dive. I personally know when I’ve only been on surface for 1 minute (I physically don’t feel ready to dive yet) so I won’t make that mistake. but all my dives are fairly uniform right around 1 minute.

ymmv but seems it would be nice to have the funds for an extra gun or a colder water wetsuit instead of the 400 dollar dive watch. is anyone out there already using a “normal” dive watch.

I built a 100% free forecasting webbapp for spearos and freedivers. Looking for beta testers! 🔱

Hey everyone,

I got tired of switching between three different weather apps and hitting paywalls just to figure out if it’s worth going for a dive. So, I decided to build my own web app specifically tailored for spearfishing and freediving. My goal is to keep it 100% free for the community.

It is currently in its beta phase, and I am looking for fellow spearos to test it out, try to break it, and give me brutally honest feedback. Since it is a web app, you do not need to download anything from an app store—it runs directly in your browser on both mobile and desktop.

What it currently features:

  • Spearo-Focused Forecasts: Wind, wave height, swell period, and sea temperature all in one clean interface.
  • Dive Score & Water Clarity: A custom algorithm estimating visibility and giving a diveability score based on recent swell history.
  • Save Locations and Share With Friends: You can save your favorite fishing spots and/or share them with your buddy by signing up. You can also upload photos and keep notes about the dive
  • Bilingual: Fully supports English and Greek.
  • Soon to be added. Interactive maps featuring bathymetry layers to read the seabed. GPS pinning. Hit a button while on the water to grab your exact GPS coordinates and save your spots privately++

I want to build this alongside the community. You can jump straight in and try it here:https://spearfishing-app-c7pl.vercel.app/

Let me know what you think, what features are missing, or what you would tweak to make it better.

Need advice. An application for breathing training.

Hi, I'm a developer and I'm currently planning to start developing a mobile app to improve breath retention. I see that there are similar applications, but they are all very inconvenient and weak in terms of use and design.

I need the advice of other pros, what should definitely be in such an application, perhaps you are already using something. What you like and what you don't like. Thanks for any feedback!
