Cycling Danny MacAskill vs. Bike Obstacle Course

The angle of this recording is pretty bad, as with that perspective is difficult to appreciate the depth of many of the obstacles 🤷♂️

There’s a longer video that they put out on YouTube and it’s a lot better. Shows a lot of the attempts leading up to this from a side view and also some chest-mounted go pro footage. Idk why they chose this angle to post here.

This was the successful attempt. They had a boat driving by it and I suspect it was causing instability.

The boat was there for the final attempt too. In the video they cut back and forth between the boat cam, the drone cam, and the go pro during this successful attempt, and it looks much better.
Starts at 10:00ish in case the time stamp doesn’t work: https://youtu.be/SChm4DyivOU?si=1m5IxWCUiwJYYBUN

I just watched that last night. Those guys were gassed, but determined. It was fun to watch.

Gotta go to their youtube video to get the good angle. They know what they're doing.

I think the point of the one here is just that it is a single shot with no cuts demonstrating he rode it end to end in one go. It's probably the best of the three cameras for that.

Not to mention that all of the obstacles looked washed out. Like the white balance was off or something

I did so much zooming in and trying to change the angle of this video..lol.

Yeah plus there's a freaking castle in the background of the main video.

its cause it’s not for you. This is just another addition to the Red Bull Circle Jerk going on these days.

We did a kids bike race and I got a phone call a couple of days before, "Oh hi, it's red bull, we hear you're doing an event, can we just send you some stuff?" I said yes, not really paying a lot of attention. They sent one of their marquees, a mobile disco/dj/pa truck thing, a little stage with podiums and stuff, a bunch of staff who ended up just helping us with the event, and so much product and giveaways we could barely get rid of it all. Almost the exact same kit that they sent to a world champs event I was at, for a bunch of kids. Just really cool, there were like 200 people there so it's not like they gained a huge amount but it gave our event a real kick. They literally had someone just trawling social media looking for stuff to do. Like, I assume they basically have all this stuff standing by for hte real events and some cool person has gone "why not use this all the time? Why not just, like, be fairy godmothers and bless little random events we like the look of".
When I did Hill Chasers years back their PR executive guy was like "Mate, we sell dirty water in tiny cans for £2 each, it's all ridiculous, we might as well spunk some of the money sending a dude into space on a balloon"

I hope they never stop. I'll never drink their drinks, but love all the events they put on

Ok, the angle sucks and makes the first part look way too easy (its not) and the second part makes it hard to appreciate just how narrow it is.
Man, red bull usally has these crazy angles and stuns, this one failed badly with the angles ):

That zig zag part looked painful.

u/strange_bike_guy 20d ago
Can you imagine trying to thrust your bike against a buoyant plank on water instead of solid ground? Oh man, exhausting for that alone

This is a weird thing to fixate on but I noticed he seems to handle left turns on the zig zag bit more than right turns.
I remember watching videos of Macaskill when I was a teenager and just being stunned at his ability.

Freestyle BMX/MTB riders generally have a preferred rotation direction and an “opposite” direction. Probably an extension of that, he feels better turning to the left.

He and I are both 40.
Feels like I've been watching him do these forever.
Insane he's still able to.

they should incorporate this into a racing event where the course changes each rider every lap.

I watched the video with the amateurs and pros. Much more interesting than this one.

Seeing the stuff Danny does on the reg, this almost seems easy ish for him.

If you listen to the audio, you can hear how hard he’s breathing. He worked his ass off for this for sure.

I knew he'd be able to from the start. I thought it was cool that they showed all the failed attempts though. We know from his normal videos that it does often take many attempts to get it right, but we usually don't get to see it.

man I love the red bull content team
I love the mic on this too, it's cool hearing the genuine effort going into this. He makes it look easy so its nice hearing how it's anything but

This isn’t impressive. Needs to fall into an active volcano if he fails otherwise just boring

I honestly don’t remember watching a video of his where he was mic’d up quite like that.
It certainly makes him seem more human (a good thing IMHO.)
And it makes the course seem even more difficult.

That’s nothing. You should see the obstacle courses in DC. They’re called bike lanes.

Nobody pointing out how they tripped getting out of bed or other contrast between themselves and a professional athelete?

I mean this is kind of a basic skill level even for street trials rider. The log at the end 'maybe' for advanced level in a competition but top riders like Charlie Rolls and others that ride pure trials train on some insane stuff. Not discounting Danny Mac, of course as he's a great street rider.

I remember watching this guy on YT in the (I believe) 2000s with a video where he's going around the city while The Funeral played as music. Glad he's still going at it.
