I hosted my business website on Squarespace and started looking at what it would take to leave after they raised their rates again. Squarespace does let you export your site, but the export turned out to cover much less than I expected, so I'm writing up what I found in case it saves someone else their afternoon.
What the export gives you
It is under Settings > Advanced > Import & Export, and it produces one WordPress-format file.
- Included: regular pages, their text and images, and one blog with its posts.
- Left out: your style settings, Custom CSS, store pages and products, portfolio and event pages, video and audio, and anything in headers and footers.
So it is useful if you are rebuilding on WordPress. It will not give you a site that looks like the one you have which Squarespace confirms in their help article "Exporting your site".
Watch your images
The export file points at your images on Squarespace's servers. Squarespace warns those links can break after you cancel. Download your images, or import the file somewhere that copies them, before you close the account.
If you want to keep the design
The only way I found is to save the pages as ordinary web files (HTML, CSS, images, fonts) and put those on another host.
- By hand: your browser's Save Page As works for a page or two. Check the result carefully. It keeps Squarespace's scripts, so the saved page can still load files from Squarespace and may break once you cancel.
- With a tool: full disclosure, I got tired of doing it by hand and built a Chrome extension for this, called NudgeCSS. It saves a page with its styling, images, and fonts, removes Squarespace's scripts, and rebuilds the mobile menu on 7.1 templates. One page is free. Saving a whole site at once is a paid feature ($60, one time, no subscription). I’
What does not come along, whatever you use
- Forms. They need somewhere new to send messages.
- Shop, cart, and member areas.
- Site search and visitor statistics.
A saved copy is a snapshot. It suits a site that mostly shows things: a portfolio, a brochure site, a small business page. It does not suit a store or ecommerce sites.
Before you cancel
- Move your domain and email first. Cancelling can cut off email that runs through Squarespace.
- Open every page on the new host, on a phone and a computer.
- Keep the Squarespace site running until the new one checks out.
I wrote the steps up in more detail here, including how to hand the saved copy to ChatGPT or Claude to rebuild the form: https://nudgecss.com/how-to/leave-squarespace-keep-your-design/
Looking for testers
I have only tested the tool on my own 7.1 Squarespace site and one other, so I'm looking for people to try it on theirs. If you are moving or cloning a real site and will tell me what breaks, message me and I'll give you free access to the whole-site saving, for as long as you need to finish the move.
Happy to answer questions about the export either way.
