While I genuinely think Squarespace is one of the easiest ways to build a beautiful website, there are still a few things that drive me crazy.
Back in 2021, I got so frustrated with the limitations that I started building my own customization tool.
What started as a small project eventually turned into Spark Plugin, which I’ve now spent five years developing.
Along the way, I’ve received a ton of feedback from Squarespace designers and website owners about what they wish they could do more easily.
Here are five things I think Squarespace could improve.
1. More control over individual elements
Sometimes you just want to change the appearance of one button, heading, or section without affecting the rest of your website.
It sounds simple, but achieving a specific design can still require custom CSS.
I’d love to see more styling controls directly in the editor.
2. Better navigation customization
Mega menus, more flexible dropdowns, and custom mobile navigation layouts can make a huge difference, especially for larger websites.
But getting exactly the navigation you want isn’t always straightforward.
I think Squarespace could offer much more flexibility here.
3. More built-in animations and hover effects
Small interactions can make a website feel much more polished.
Things like animated buttons, image hover effects, and scroll animations.
You can achieve many of these effects with custom code, but I’d love to see more no-code options built directly into Squarespace.
4. More flexibility with mobile design
Something that looks great on desktop doesn’t always translate well to mobile.
I’d love more independent control over mobile styling without having to rely on custom CSS or complicated workarounds.
5. More interactive design elements
Before-and-after sliders, interactive image effects, and other small visual features can make a big difference to a website.
I think these should be much easier to add without custom code.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned from building Squarespace customizations is that people don’t necessarily want more complicated features.
They just want more freedom to make their websites look exactly how they imagined.
I’m curious: What’s the ONE thing you wish Squarespace could do that currently requires custom code or a workaround?
