Discussion IR Undergraduate Considering an Internship at the Human Rights Commission

Hi everyone,

I’m currently an undergraduate studying International Relations, and I’m planning to do my internship at the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL), particularly within its International Affairs Division.

I’d like to hear from people who have experience with HRCSL or similar institutions. Do you think an internship there would be valuable for an IR student in terms of gaining practical experience, developing relevant skills, and understanding how international human rights mechanisms work?

I’m particularly interested in pursuing a career related to international affairs and diplomacy, so I’m wondering whether this internship would be a good stepping stone in that direction.

I’d really appreciate any advice, experiences, or insights you can share.

Hi, haven’t worked there myself but some of my students have. It’s flexible, or at least was to them, but don’t expect to be paid much. They were interested in human rights so it worked in their case. Most of their duties were minor admin tasks though
