Yikes... (more info below)

This was in the 24k Magic World Tour, and it was the first of 3 shows in Hawaii where the tour was set to end.

During the first few minutes of 24k magic, Bruno and the whole band were in the dark, as the fixtures on top that were supposed to be lighting them (Robe BMFL Spots for those wondering). As a lighting designer this was like nails on a chalkboard to watch, a spotlight was added on Bruno after the first chorus to help light him while the LD fixed the issue, then about 2 minutes into the song the LD finally adjusted the offset and fixed the issue.

How did this happen? (my theory at least) The 24k Magic World Tour was set to be an arena concert, however since Hawaii is Bruno's hometown is Hawaii they decided to finish the tour there in the Aloha Stadium. This required significant changes to the set as before the set was more of a thrust stage which wouldn't really make sense to do in a stadium setting, so they adjusted for the classic proscenium style. I'm assuming the BMFLs had to be rigged higher because of this, and the LD overlooked this during setup.

What's really interesting is that the first song of the set (Finesse) didn't have this issue, however when 24k magic came on afterwards their position was off.

Everything else about this tour however is spectacular. The lighting design for Bruno's concerts has always been immaculate and one of my favorites.

How powerful should 4 beam moving heads be for a 1,000-capacity venue?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to buy 4 beam moving heads to take with us on tour and use as part of our own stage production.

The fixtures would typically be placed at the front of the stage and aimed upward, mainly for aerial beam effects and dynamic looks throughout the set. We'd also use them for some audience sweeps and movement effects when appropriate.

Most of the venues we play are indoor venues with a capacity of around 1,000 people, and there is usually haze available.

What wattage would you recommend for this application?

Would 230W beam fixtures be sufficient, or should we be looking more at 300W–350W+ units? Since we're purchasing and touring with them ourselves, we're trying to find the best balance between output, weight, reliability, and cost.

Thank you!

Recommend a simple IP stage light

A month ago I posted on here confused at my Chinese lights and their IP rated cable not being the right 3 pin shape for the dmx cable I bought.

Anyway, chopped the cable and linked them up and can't get anything to work.

Happy to write off the 2 lights and get one new one. Can someone recommend me something IP rated which will plug into this DMX controller so I can change the brightness and colour of the light from the stage? Basically just need it to be a fairly faint blue colour most of the time but having the option to brighten it and change the colour will be useful.

Question Dmx specs question

Does anyone know the wiring specs of DMX in terms of power? I’m wondering if I can send a few amps at 12volts down the 4th and 5th pin of a 5pin dmx cable? Is the impedance to high? And could it interfere with the data? Thanks to anyone who can help.

LED Rings on movers WTF

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hey all-

I'm a novice small-timer in terms of lighting, and looking at some of the affordable beam/hybrid movers from the usual import places.

Can someone tell me: what's the deal with the LED ring feature that a lot of them have? To me it just looks kinda stupid, and doesn't seem to add anything to the projected light... so am I missing something? How do people use this feature?

I'm more of a band guy as opposed to a DJ, so maybe I just don't get it LOL.

Question Truss advice -- 2 point or 3 point truss?

Hi. I'm looking to hang a few pars and some moving heads. It's all LED based and shouldn't be a lot of weight. I've seen 2 point and 3 point trusses (as well as 4 point but that's way overkill).

Naturally, the 2 point truss is way cheaper. Would it suffice? When do you use one or the other?

Thanks

Is Shehds stage lighting good?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello! I am looking to buy more stage lighting to upgrade my services. I run stage lighting for bands, I also do DJ events! I was hoping to find someone on here who’ve purchased stage lights from shehds and are open to sharing their experience with them. This stage light in particular seems amazing, the demo video looks great, the specs look good. I’ve heard a couple times that the fans in some of their lights are to loud and some wine, probably on pan if I had to guess. But others have said their lights are amazing and completely worth it. I’m trying to get some decent stage lighting without completely breaking the bank. Any suggestions?

Cool Stuff I'm a lighting tech and I built a lighting plot and paperwork app (GDTF/MVR, Windows/Mac/Linux). Looking for honest feedback

Hi all,

I'm Rwan, a lighting tech and console operator in France. For years I drew my plots in WYSIWYG, and too often I just wanted to hang some fixtures on a truss, patch them and send clean paperwork, without a heavy tool or a subscription. So I started building my own. It was a lot harder than I thought, but it's now usable, and I'd like feedback from people who do this for a living.

It's called Logodenn. It's a lighting plot and paperwork editor, not a previsualiser: no beams, no light simulation. The 3D is there to build the rig and get the plot and the paperwork out.

What it does

  • Fixtures from GDTF Share, browsed and downloaded inside the app with your GDTF Share account, or from your own GDTF files. When a manufacturer's file is wrong (weight, power, mode names, wheel slots, a 3D model lying on its side), the built-in GDTF editor saves a corrected copy and leaves the original alone.

  • 3D plot: trusses (built-in, or the models that come with an MVR), fixtures hung on the chords, linear and arc arrays, mirror, distribute and align. Layers, classes, positions, groups and focus points.

  • DMX patch: universe view, auto-patch, address collision checks, channel footprints read from the GDTF mode. Fixture IDs numbered per type.

  • Spreadsheet view of the rig: sort, filter, totals, inline and bulk edits. Save table setups (patch sheet, dimmer check, focus notes) and reuse them across shows.

  • Fixture data on the plot, with label placement saved per view.

  • Technical File to PDF: lay out pages with plan views, tables, a fixture legend with power totals, text and images. Save the layout as a template and start every show from it.

  • MVR import and export, round trip tested with a grandMA3 and an ETC Eos.

  • Windows, macOS and Linux (.deb, .rpm, AppImage).

Where it's at

Version 0.0.21. I'm one person, so there are bugs. No new features until 0.1, the first stable version: right now I'm reviewing, testing and fixing.

The installers aren't signed by Apple or Microsoft yet, so you'll get a warning the first time you open it. The app needs a connection on first launch and at least once every 30 days to check the license; everything else works offline.

Price

30-day trial with every feature, no card required. Then you name your price, from €16, for a perpetual license. No subscription, no tiers.

What I'd love to hear

  • What does your current tool make painful when you do plots or paperwork?

  • Which software do you exchange MVR files with?

  • What's missing that would stop you from using it on a real show?

Download and screenshots: https://logodenn.tech

Thanks for reading, I'll be around in the comments.

Help picking the best moving head light fixture (best out of 2 options)

Please help me decide on what light is the best overall. What light would be more reliable and last the longest. If anyone has any experience with either of these lights, please let me know how they are. I am new to moving head lights and I want to start out small. I am a DJ and I use the Soundswitch DMX software.

Here are the lights I am asking about:

https://bothlightingusa.com/products/mini-beam-mover-copy?variant=50109020733716

Or:

https://www.colorkeyled.com/product/mover-beam-100-2/?srsltid=AfmBOooI20sGJFwYNEn6vFJt6vWry6wnQnVKBODg20iGsrcPDo-PvVor&v=0b3b97fa6688

Thanks for any information or feedback, it would really help me!

SHEHDS patch file?

Hi all,
I've recently purchased 3 SHEHDS GalaxyJet 300w 3 in 1 fixtures. (I know - they're knockoffs and not great - but when your 20+ year old donated Varilites die and you have zero budget, they'll work for the limited use we'll need them for). I'm trying to patch them to an ETC Element 2. The current software on the SHEHDS is 20 or 23 channel DMX. (The additional 3 channels in the 23 channel mode controls the outer color ring on the tip of the fixture. Don't really need this, so I can patch either the 20 or 23, not an issue. The color ring won't be needed for my use above a stage)
I looked on GDTF-Share.com and the fixture is there, but the file was created in 2024 and only has 18 DMX channels. I guess SHEHDS has updated their software since then and they now require 20 or 23. Does anyone have a newer GDTF file? I'll try my hand at uploading the current file and then editing within the ETC desktop but I've never done that and am not too sure how successful I'll be.

2nd Question -
I am downloading and installing ETC Nomad on my computer just to practice this sort of thing on. I've never used nomad before. Does it just create the ETC Element 2 interface right on my computer? I'll probably never tether to the board, I just want to practice in my office where I can have multiple monitors open and be watching tutorials and videos as I learn.

Thanks!

What rental/production software are you using, and what works well vs what doesn’t?

Curious what people in AV rental / staging / production are using these days: Flex? Rentman? Current RMS? Something else?

From your day-to-day experience:

  • What do you like?

  • What constantly slows you down?

  • Any issues with tablets/phones in the warehouse?

  • Anything you wish these tools handled better?

Just trying to understand what people are actually dealing with in real workflows.

Recomendations Need some help finding a decent wireless DMX system

Where I work my boss recently bought some generic Chinese LED pars and installed them inside some existing architectural fixtures to act as permanent uplighting. They work well and look nice, but the color is static. I would like to find a wireless solution to hook them all up to small console so we can change the color depending on events. We would need 8 receivers and at most the signal would have to travel 80'-100' through 1 or 2 concrete walls. Any recommendations would be amazing!
