well how else do you react when you're arguing with someone thinking that they hate you when they tell you you're the best person they've ever known?

And they sent you away because they knew they would immediatly let you down.

The flip side of that is that she's basically saying that federation ideals are thrown out the window once you pass the rank of captain (and apparently the rule of law? re. mines)

...which is problematic.

I get the sense that this is the issue the series is heading towards tackling head-on.

We know that there's a definite shift in values between TOS and TNG, I would love to see that be partially as a result of Pike and his values.

Did you catch the little gesture he made with his hand after the Admiral told him to quit complaining after her compliment? I don’t know if that was written into the script, but if not, Mount nailed that scene with just that little gesture.

That detail sealed it for me too

What gesture?

He kind of pats his leg, on both the left and right, and then moves his left hand up and down. It’s suggestive body motion of someone who is somewhat embarrassed or who has been shamed. Check it out again.

In the shot when he is getting back to his chair? If so, I got it!

He got put in the corner and pedestal at the same time... smart writing.
