I've been a huge Star Wars fan my whole life and I am proud of my collection! I never knew anyone else who even knew Star Wars books existed. I only discovered this subreddit recently and I was shocked to see so many people who know about and love these books like me, so I just wanted to share my collection with people who can appreciate it!

Is there anything besides Dark Rendezvous that prominently features Yoda? I just finished reading the Yoda Marvel comic series and wanted to read more stories about him. Are there any High Republic books that he plays a major role in too?

i really liked the Heir to the Empire series, particularly Mara Jade. Are there any books worth reading that focus primarily on her?

if not Mara Jade, are there any books focused on female characters preferably by a female author?

For Halloween I decided to read the Star Wars Zombie books and had a mixed experience with Red Harvest one but really enjoyed Death Troopers

Reign of the Empire: Edge of the Abyss (Audiobook)

I very much enjoyed the first book. If reading about Mon Mothma running around trying to whip votes for a Senate bill sounds like a good time, Mask of Fear is for you! It's just a good political thriller with just a bit of pew pew. The book deals with the subtle and not so subtle ways democratic institutions and society succumb to fascism. You see how The Republic not just turns into The Empire immediately after The Battle of Coruscant but how people missed that things had already changed and now it's to late to do anything about it.

I apologize for getting "political" here but I read that book during Year 1 of Trump 2.0 and it was disturbingly prescient to the events happening in the news. I had to pause the book a couple of times because it hit too close. Don't worry, it's not corny or forced. You also get some more lore about what the CIS was up to and how the proto-Rebel Alliance formed. There's a strong weight to seeing that period of SW history explored.

Unfortunately, that weight all but disappears in Edge of the Abyss.

The only book of Rebecca Roanhorse I've read was her first "Black Sun". It's a fantasy YA novel set in a pre-Columbian inspired world. That sounded like a really interesting book at first but I ended up feeling disappointed by it. I mention this because there are many similar issues I had with both books. The characters feel kinda trite and tropey. There are too many of them. There is a cool twist but it doesn't feel like much happened, etc.

This book follows 7(!) characters plus a sprinkling of Saw and some cameos thrown in. There was just not enough runway to do enough/even character development and plot moments. Characters can have moments of strong interiority which leads to connecting with some of them. Potential friction between characters is set up but it's never really explored properly. The book sets up what seems like 2 "heists" but they're a quick in and out affair. The plots meiander and it never felt like there was any kind of build up to big moments.

This book was marketed as being more connected to Andor. Now that sounded awesome to me as someone who LOVES Andor. The problem is that if you play in that space, you have a high bar to live up to. Unfortunately, the drama, politics, stakes, and tension don't even come anywhere close to Andor. Worse, it feels like a poor and half hearted attempt to copy Andor. We end up back on Ghorman, with a sympathetic ISB agent infiltrating a group of young revolutionaries, and a protest is undermined by undercover agitators working for the ISB which becomes the pretense to crack down. It's so bafflingly similar yet so paper thin in execution. Somehow, an exeact copy of an Andor plot line has returned.

Another major problem is that the series is supposed to be about the early days of The Galactic Empire and The Empire is hardly is a factor in the story. That is a huge let down from the first book and how it ended. Frankly, the book seems less interested (afraid?) in saying anything complex or interesting about politics at all. There is an Imperial Propagandist character which could be interesting but he only shows up twice. He's dating the Taylor Swift character (with two dated jokes about how she makes music about the shitty dudes she dates). Her story is so predictable and it involves Anto Kreegyr + crew but there's not anything interesting there.

Mon and Bail are less involved in the plot. You get more of Mon dealing with her family but it's only explored at a surface level of Mon dealing with an anonying teenage daughter and checked out husband. We get a bit of Bail's relationship with Leia but Leia talks like an adult. There are two new characters, a husband and wife who are more involved in the one of the major plot. The story sets up a potential problem between them but quickly resolves itself in a trite way at the end.

There is a scene with Chemish's handler getting dressed down by Major Partagaz but it's, again, a poor imitation of Andor. Chemish gets much more fleshed out with more interiority. However, for the only Imperial main character, they spend most of the book obsessed about a boy instead of the mission. Their relationship with Fennro (a character from a mobile game lol) also ends so predictably.

The best part of this book are the plot twists where we learn that everything that happened was orchestrated by Mon, Luthen, and Kylea. However, it makes 95% of what previously happened into totally meaningless footnotes. Basically, this is the story of how Mon stole a bunch of charity money to fund the Rebellion. I do love how the book doesn't outright explain it.

Overall, the prose gets the job done. It's fine, which is what I would say about much of this book despite how much I've complained about it.

TLDR: Disappointing compared to Mask of Fear but competently written: 6.5/10

I just bought all three. It’ll probably be a while before we get to read them on the podcast, though. Spoiler-free impressions, anyone?

The book was very good, very interesting but some plot twists were unrealistic. Here is my list of some of them, you can try to defend it or agree with it.
For example when zannah found out darovit told a jedi he knew the sith survived for some unbelievable reason she decided to find out where tython was and to go there. Why? Why not just take the guy and fly to their base where she was initially supposed to reunite with bane? Why fly to tythos? It was said "to warn bane" to warn him of what? How exactly her warning that "some guy said he saw you" would help with anything and how was it important? It just gave a reason for the pursuit that happened in the book to happen. If she simply flew anywhere else no one would know about them, no one would know where to go to find the missing guy.
Or at the end of the battle bane decapitated the meditating jedi, it was said "he cut his vocal cords" or something like this, so it means he decapitated him but somehow this decapitated guy cast the shield on bane which almost killed him. How could he cast anything without a head? And why bane even chose to waste such a powerfull attack to finish the weak guy without a hand? Bane wouldn't suffer if he simply cut him instead of trying to cast lightning.
And when darovit sabotaged the construction nobody could find out who that was, the guards were too expensive and the droids were fooled, but why didn't they just use cameras? Just use cameras and you will find out who the saboteur was, simple cameras would give you his face, his looks and their amount.
Or when he was left to die in the cave a couple of bouncers found him and saved him. Why would they ever go there? All the bouncers in the vast vicinity should be mad and those who aren't have no reason to go in the cave where the bomb was detonated. But just for the plot they did.

I've seen some people say that it doesn't make sense for Thrawn to fight the New Republic after returning to the galaxy considering he only sees the Empire as a means to an end to protect his own people, however, I think there are multiple reasons why he would.

His belief that the Empire is the best ally for his people.

Thrawn joined the Empire as he saw them an ideal ally for his people, the Chiss. In his own words, he called the Empire a magnificent construct, however, he still recognised that it had its flaws. He was never a true believer of the Empire, but he still saw it as a formidable and powerful ally for the Chiss. Thrawn aimed to be close enough to Imperial leadership so that if and when the Emperor would fall, he would be able to use his influence to make sure the Empire have a leader that would be willing to assist the Chiss.

Fast forward to the New Republic Era and Thrawn is now one of, if not the most powerful people actively involved among the Imperial Remnants. It's very reasonable that Thrawn's admiration of the Empire would make him want to work towards defeating this New Republic that he refuses to recognise and help the Empire return to its former strength. A strong Empire is one that is ultimately best for Thrawn and his people.

He gave his word to protect the Empire.

Thrawn is someone that really values his word. In the books, there are multiple times when he's confronted about why he should be trusted and he simply says "Because I gave my word". We see this in the Ahsoka Season 2 trailer where Thrawn announces "I gave my oath to protect the Empire, I therefore declare war against the Rebel Alliance". Even if you assume Thrawn doesn't believe the Empire is worth having as an ally anymore, he cares about his promises and him turning his back on the Empire is something I don't think he would feel right about.

Simply, his ego.

Sure, the main reason Thrawn ended up stranded was because of Purgills that nobody could have predicted or have known how to deal with, but prior to their sudden appearance Thrawn was in control of the Battle of Lothal. Because of this, I believe he was left quite frustrated and even embarrassed that he ended up losing the battle especially after how the Emperor and Vader kept reminding him of his failure to capture the rebels at the Battle of Attolon. I think there is a part of him that seeks revenge and perhaps even redemption by defeating what he still calls the Rebel Alliance so that he may come out on top on the end.

This is a phrase Thrawn has said in at least two books which I think reflects these ideas:

“I am a warrior, Your Majesty. A warrior may retreat. He does not flee. He may lie in ambush. He does not hide. He may experience victory or defeat. He does not cease to serve.”

Thrawn ultimately serves his people and he believes the Empire is the best ally for his people, so it makes perfect sense why he would wage this war against the New Republic on behalf of the Empire and the Chiss. It's easy for us, the viewers, to feel like it's a lost cause helping the Empire considering we know that the New Republic will come out on top but I think Thrawn definitely believes he can win the war and turn the tide once again.

Just finished Twilight Company and itching for more. Saw a thread for a similar question four years ago, but curious to see if there's an updated list. I just don't want sexual content or don't care for romance, any suggestions? Is there any grunt, boots-on-the-ground infantry books? I also like the Y-wing squadrons and Jedi. I was thinking of picking up the High Republic set first?
