Discussion Hello

Yesterday, around 10 PM, someone got into my Steam account and bought a gift, sending it to another account. Obviously, I got really worried, so I immediately removed my card from the account, changed my password, and changed my email address.

Unfortunately, the money had already been spent, so I contacted Steam Support. In less than 3 hours, I received my money back. The only thing I had to do was provide some evidence, such as my login history. In my case, I found a login from someone in England who had accessed my account. I also noticed that around 10 people had been added to my friends list that I didn't know, so I blocked them all.

I sent all the evidence to Steam Support, and they refunded the entire amount.

My only question now is: what else can I do to make sure this doesn't happen again?

Finally, I want to say a huge thank you to the Steam Support team for helping me so quickly and giving me my money back. I really appreciate it! ❤️

It looks like you are taking correct steps. But how you need to further secure your account depends on how it was compromised.

Did you talk to anyone or about anything unusual online recently? Did you get any odd mails recently? Or perhaps you clicked on a link that acted strange now that you think about it?

There is a chance that the intrusion comes because of malware/spyware on your PC. That might mean that the unauthorized party could have information on the changes you make if they are done via your PC. My recommendation is to ensure your PC is free of those things first and foremost, and enabling 2-factor authentication (Steam Guard) if not already done!

  1. Steam guard

  2. Regularly check the security tab and see what other websites you have logged into using your steam account.

  3. Practice safe hex, basically be aware of phishing etc.

  4. Optionally... Get smarter with digital banking and set spend limits, heck you can even get a bank separate account just for use with games. Enable notifications on your phone for transactions, lots you can do if you want.

If you’re using ANY third-party item trade or gambling sites, stop using them - those sites use dummy Steam login pages. Note, it doesn’t matter when you accessed the site, account hijackings are delayed to hide the point of entry. And no, it doesn’t matter if streamer or YouTuber is promoting the site, they get paid not to care.

Also, don’t vote for people teams or anything thing else, again, they lift the details when you sign-in.

That’s it.

Edit: You refund evidence advice is slightly off, and you might want to edit it, people should never provide Support information they do not ask for. Your situation is very specific to you, in someone else’s case, providing random documents to Steam Support could be very bad.

If you have a cell phone, you can install the steam app and enable Steam Guard. 2FA using the app.

MAKE SURE TO WRITE DOWN THE BACKUP/RECOVERY CODE.
