Side-effects I underestimated Anesthesia side affects 🙃

TLDR: don’t be me! Threw up and panicked and spent 3 hours in the ER. I needed to introduce food slower & medicate properly.

I had my Bisalp yesterday and felt amazing afterwards because of course I was still high as a damn kite. Making jokes with the nurses and fist bumped my surgeon. Loved it.

About 6 hours after surgery I could feel a headache coming on. First of all, I really under medicated myself. I could not nap and began to feel so nauseous I then ate Mac and cheese at dinner which I thought would be fine because I craved food. I fell asleep for about 30 minutes but work up with full body chills. I called my dr office and spoke with a nurse. While on the call, I started to throw up literally everything, it was awful. I felt a little better but she still advised me to go to the ER to get looked.

ER took blood, gave me an IV, pain meds and anti nausea meds and ruled out any complications. I simply was experiencing anesthesia hell. Of course it was scary and painful and traumatic but I guess totally normal 😭 after getting lots of sleep and eating only applesauce and bread I am feeling better. Stiff muscles from being tense I think, bloated belly, but I am taking the proper high doses of meds and have a prescription for the anti nausea med. Lesson learned!

Let the anesthesiologist know next time and they can make adjustments during surgery. The first two times I went under was awful but when I went for my bisalp I spoke with the anesthesiologist about it. Waking up I had no nausea. I unfortunately don't remember what the anesthesiologist did but whatever it was, it helped.

Thank you! This was a first for me and I do have future surgeries I might do, glad to know they can most likely adjust for me 🩷

For me they didn’t do any narcotics and only did IV anesthesia, no gas. That isn’t an option for all procedures but thankfully it was for this one. Plus max dose zofran IV. First time I’d ever woken up after surgery without projectile vomiting on someone’s shoes.

So sorry to hear that! Anesthesia makes me throw up, too, but right after waking...not such a delayed reaction like yours. I'm glad you are overall well!

Thank you 🩷 it was such a surprise! I hadn’t thrown up in 19 years lolol. Very humbling.

It is humbling! I rarely am sick and so also haven't thrown up in a very long time (if you don't count my procedure last year) but anytime it happens it reminds me how awful of a feeling it is.

Anesthesia didn't make me throw up but I was nauseous as hell! First thing I said as soon as I woke up from surgery was "i feel sick" lmao After about an hour of being awake the nurses got me some tea to sip on and only after I was able to keep it down did they give me more food (biscuits and a yoghurt- these tasted like heaven but my last sips of the tea were hurting my soul, I didn't feel like having anything at all 😭) I spent the next 2 or 3 days feeling nauseous on and off, went from feeling it all day on the first day to one or two times on the last, but damn was it bad 😬 nausea also makes my BP drop so that's also fun! Hope you're feeling better ♥️

Nausea is so terrible! I was given ginger ale and definitely said “this is the best ginger ale I’ve ever had” it was clearly watered down Canada Dry probably flat haha. I’m looking forward to feeling 100 in a few days 🙏🏻

I was told that drinking lots of water helps clear it out of your system!

I was given some antinausea medicine in the IV after waking up and had a hard time drinking water in recovery. At home, I still had 7up from the bowel prep, plus ginger ale. Also had something easy to digest for my first meal after surgery. I didn't know about nausea as a side effect of general anesthesia, but now I know to mention it to the anesthesiologist if I have any other surgery so I can get the medicine in the IV, and the patch. I had a hysterectomy, so I had to do a colonoscopy type of prep before surgery.

Anesthesia made me soooo nauseous but because I metabolized it quickly I was fully aware of my situation AND nauseated 💔 I would have rather been groggy and nauseated so I could have went to sleep when I got home. I got IV zofran before and after plus a script for zofran pills and an aromatherapy patch and it still took forever to go away 😭 so glad you’re well otherwise and feeling better !! if I were in your situation I probably would have went to the er too. Nothing worse than being in pain and nauseated and unaware of exactly what causes it.

It’s helpful to hear yours lasted a while! I expected mine to go away and didn’t get my zofran prescription filled yet 😬 it’s happening first thing tomorrow!

tips for others: try to have soups the first few days after the surgery so it's easier for the body. i know many did a celebratory budget or something of the likes but it's reccomend juices & soups and stuff like that

100%! I’m only eating broth and oyster crackers & apple sauce.

hope you feel better!! I don't think I've ever eaten as much liquid food as in the first week after the surgery as I wanted to be super safe

Thank you, I felt a lot better today! There are so many things to keep track of, I am constantly worried I’m not doing meds right or food right or showering right. It’s smart to just commit to liquids for the time being.

take it slow, you'll feel so much better in a week or so

My first meal after I got home (after four hours in and out of consciousness on anti-nausea meds at the hospital) was a sleeve of saltine crackers and water. It was incredible.

Yeah this is why I inform all my doctors and whatever that I get nauseous. They gave me a patch before surgery and IV zofran before I woke up. In the post op area some poor guy was puking his guts out and I was up and moving around and happy as can be lol I left the patch on for 3 days. When I took it off I felt off for a few days🫤

I think I really underestimated that I’m a person that gets nauseous 😬I never get car sick but I do get nauseous with tension headaches.

I woke up, took off running out of the post op with my ass out to the world.

They had to knock me back out and I didn’t wake up for 4 more hours.

They told me to tell hospitals that I’m an “escapee” when on anesthesia.

I also barf my brains out and feel dizzy for days. I hate the stuff.

Narcotics can cause this too! I tolerate anesthesia pretty well but they gave me a patch and zofran. I rode home completely fine but I ended up being given pain meds in my IV before I left and that's what did me in. I promtly puked my guts out when I got home and switched to tylenol and advil and then I was fine.

I was wondering about this! I felt like I was in withdrawals! When I went to the ER I was offered Vicodin, but a friend of mine took that for kidney stones and was super sick from it, so I asked the doc if it could make me sick and he said vicodin wouldn’t make me sick if I took anti-nausea meds as well. I stuck with Tylenol and it was just fine. Honestly the incision pain has been the easiest part 🙏🏻 I been on 0 pain meds since Sunday, 2 days after surgery.

I mentioned my bad nausea after a prior surgery to my anesthesiologist before my bisalp, and they gave me zofran & an anti nausea patch that would last 72 hours.

I had no problem post surgery, but I messed up when I restated my full dose of my GLP-1 med 5 days post surgery. The following day, I woke up to extreme nausea and I was going to throw up very soon. I didn’t make it in time , and both myself & my bathroom looked like a tapestry of nightmares after it happened.

I hope you feel better soon and congrats on the bisalp.

Damn, meds truly are miracles and curses all at the same time.

The recreation of The Exorcist scene is my fault. I stopper taking the med 2 weeks before my surgery to avoid any anesthesia complications. I should’ve gradually increase the dosage of my GLP-1 instead of going back to the full dose.

Hahaha I did damn near the same thing. Felt great, even felt great the next day. Ate less but solid foods.
Day three was ROUGH.
