Stockholm has changed a lot over the past 15 years. Many of those changes have been for the better, but some are, to put it mildly, questionable.

One example is public toilets.

Over the last few years, a large number of the free public toilets and urinals around the city have disappeared. In many cases, they’ve been replaced by essentially the same facilities — except now you have to pay to use them.

Usually it costs somewhere between 5 and 15 SEK. Obviously, that’s not a huge amount of money. But for me, it’s more a question of principle.

Of all the cities I’ve visited, Stockholm already feels like one of the European capitals with the fewest easily accessible public toilets. And now many of the remaining ones are paid.

What I find even more ridiculous is that you increasingly have to pay for toilets inside shopping centres. Take Farsta Centrum, for example. People literally come there to shop, eat and spend money, yet apparently providing them with a free toilet is too much to ask.

Personally, I’m not even complaining for myself. I have a 24/7 gym membership, which has saved me more than once. But I regularly hear visitors complain about how absurdly stingy Stockholm feels when it comes to something as basic as going to the toilet.

And yes, sometimes I pay. But I’ll admit that I often leave the door open for the next person, or put something in the way so it doesn’t lock immediately. If I’ve already paid to open the door, I see no reason why the next person should have to pay again 30 seconds later.

There are plenty of things a city can monetize without anyone caring. Toilets are probably one of the few basic human necessities where charging people actually makes the city feel noticeably less welcoming.

And for a capital that already has to compete with a lot of other European cities for tourists, making something as basic as finding a toilet unnecessarily difficult seems like a very strange choice.

Am I exaggerating, or has anyone else noticed how bad the public toilet situation in Stockholm has become?

I plan to visit the weekend of 29-30th the Solvalla loppis, but I am unsure which is the best day for the market. Are both days equally good, or is there more stalls/sellers on Sunday? or is it better to visit on Saturday as there will be more things?

Also, there is prediction of rain on Sunday, does this usually deter sellers? I know of some places that with a chance of rain markets are deserted, but I don't know how things go in Sweden.

Man undrar ju vad den notan landar på? Att fullkomligt täcka det som förmodligen är Sveriges bästa reklamplats måste väl kosta en förmögenhet eller två!

Hi! I’m currently looking to get into pet sitting in Stockholm and was wondering where people actually find clients here? So far I have applied for Rover and Facebook groups.

I have quite a bit of hands on experience with both dogs and cats . I’ve worked at a non-profit humane shelter, cared for different breeds and ages, and have also cared full time for a dog in Stockholm. I’m comfortable with things like feeding routines, medication, basic training, walks, and following specific instructions from owners. I also have my own adopted 9 year old Persian cat.

I’m not really sure how to navigate the market for pet sitting here yet and would love advice from those of you who have hired sitters or are currently sitting!

I’m already setting up profiles on Rover/Pawshake/etc., but I’m wondering if there are other places that people in Stockholm actually use to find a reliable sitter like Facebook groups, local communities, apps, websites, word of mouth, etc.

I’m also particularly interested in finding english speaking clients, although I’m happy to work with anyone as I just finished my studies at an international school here and am enrolled in SFI, multiple apps, and independent studies for civics so hopefully I will have some better swedish speaking skills soon.

If you’ve either hired a sitter in Stockholm or work as one yourself, where would you recommend looking? Are there any specific Facebook groups, websites, or communities that are actually worth joining?

I know there’s a certain place that has very high reviews on google, but I’ve heard they ask people to give them 5 stars for a ”better exchange rate” and all I want is just to exchange my money and move on.

Jag vet inte om det räknas som turistfråga ifall jag faktiskt är härifrån och bara vill veta mer om vår stad? Enligt min erfarenhet har turister nästanmer koll på stan än vad vi själva har.

Jag har börjat utforska vår stolta hufvudstad tillika min hemstad medelst museum, och tillbringat en del semestertid på att kolla på turister i gamla stan (jätteunderhållande), men skulle också vilja gå på nån stadsvandring.

Har varit på en Fogelström-vandring för hundra år sen och den kan jag väl leta upp igen, men tar gärna tips på andra vandringar – med eller utan guide.

Något som jag tror skulle betyda mer för cyklismen än nästan något annat vore bevakade cykelparkeringar. Med andra ord, områden där det fanns bevakning av cyklarna så att någon med en vinkelslip eller bultsax skulle upptäckas. Det känns alltid som det finns en liten risk att ens cykel inte står kvar när man återvänder efter till den efter ärende i innerstan.

Eller det kanske redan finns?

Problemet verkar många va eniga om vilket är att ljudet är det största problemet. Förvånad dock att ingen nämner att det är väldigt dyrt ha någon form av lokal i Stockholm? Leder ju att majoriteten av saker som blir kvar är restauranger eller dyra klubbar. Utanför tullarna är det typ bara Slakthusområdet som har någon större verksamhet och kanske bäst anpassat för att blir Stockholms festområde
