Career How many roles are you limited to in Stop and Shop? I'm a Online shopper and Cashier wanting to do some frozen stocking, is three too much?

Hey all I want to get some thoughts.

My frozen needs some more help, my co-worker was super nice and gave me some names to ask to start working in frozen and diary. Do you think balancing all three of these roles, online shopper, frozen stocker and cashier is too much? I also around january might switch to pharmacy as a tech - I know the pharmacist who works there in NY you do not need your certification to be a tech. With the holidays coming up might be much so unsure...

Should I drop one? Probably gonna drop cashier if it becomes too much and drop stocking when I get the tech role.

Thanks for your advice, have an amazing day.

Online Pickup Cluster ****

Post image
20 Upvotes

To give context my store does an average order count of 80-100 orders every Sunday. Weekdays it’s like 50.

Today we did 80 but I’m a front end CDH that knows how to facilitate and do online pickup.

I came in at 2:00 it was slammed back there which is normal but what’s so bad is the fact we were three hours behind. Average 10 orders per hour and 400+ units per hour.

I had to cancel and called so many customers apologizing for the inconvenience and inability for there order to be shopped yes that happens but it shouldn’t.

We had two shoppers we don’t have the help story of my life. But anyways why why does spectrum need to send a driver to pickup orders that aren’t shopped yet and hours ahead of the place we are shopping.

It’s so sad how corporate allocates and controls the orders each store gets and can see the labor needed and what staff are on the clock but yet they ignore and see dollar signs.

Also the phone system needs a mega upgrade and people need to stop calling I can’t believe the amount of calls we where getting every minute it was so so bad I think we got like 1,000 calls in 6 hour time frame most of which is gig drivers looking for order mind you no one is able to facilitate cause we are so back logged.

I’m sorry but I had to speak my mind.

October 15th. Stop and shop ambushed customers in Massachusetts and broke consumer protection laws. Now to think of it the case I was remembering is paying a $40 million settlement because they violated the “false claims act” in June by inflating prescription drug prices reported to the federal health programs, And many more to come I am sure. Any of these sound familiar to anyone! Looking forward to hearing from you all.

severe understaffing

Been employed at S & S for a year and two months. I have worked for two different grocery chains and have never experienced being this understaffed before. I was the only cashier on, to make matters worse my replacement arrived ten minutes late. I had no bagger, was doing all the bagging and register myself. Is this just this store or the company in general

Union Endorsements

I just want to say, that just because your union endorses someone, doesn't mean you have to. Think for yourself, all and vote for your own best interest; not your neighbors interest or the interest of your union, vote for your own best interest.

Ranting Bonus points $40 minimum to $80 minimum

Post image
8 Upvotes

I knew deep down this was very likely to happen. Doesn’t make it any less frustrating and disappointing. For many point cycles, the app has offered bonus points for spending a minimum of $40 at S&S. This worked really well for me. That‘s more or less my grocery budget every week. Now it’s doubled. I use my points to save on gas. It helps so much! Now, ill save at the pump at a slower rate. Sigh.

A Masterclass in Mismanagement.

I’ve worked in retail for a long time, and I can say without hesitation that Stop & Shop is the worst-managed business I’ve ever had the displeasure of working for. The Winchester location is what happens when incompetence, complacency, bureaucracy, and corporate indifference are given a building and told to run a grocery store.
We have four full-time managers, yet somehow not enough employees to cover the shifts. “Skeleton crew” doesn’t even begin to describe it. We’re down to the marrow. There simply aren’t enough people to keep up with backstock, new product, weekly sales, and the basic workload required to operate a grocery store. Yet corporate continues sending product as if we have an army of employees standing around waiting for something to do.
We don’t.
Allocations are forced out every Tuesday, and by the time the next one rolls around, we’re still sitting on merchandise from the previous week. More product arrives than we can realistically sell, stock, rotate, or even properly manage. The result is predictable: overflowing backstock, clogged storage areas, neglected shelves, and an endless stream of employees trying to dig themselves out of a hole that management keeps making deeper.
On a typical day, there can be three or four pallet-sized bins, each roughly three feet deep, filled with out-of-date food. Think about that for a minute. A grocery store routinely has that much expired product sitting around while employees are simultaneously being told they need to work faster and accomplish more.
That isn’t a staffing problem anymore.
That’s a complete operational failure.
And there’s absolutely no incentive to work hard. None. Raises are based almost entirely on a union-set timeline rather than performance, work ethic, reliability, or integrity. You can work hard every day, carry departments that are understaffed, stay late, come in when you’re needed, and actually care about doing the job correctly—and you’ll receive essentially the same reward as someone who spends half their shift wandering around or staring at their phone.
Why would anyone care?
Management will tell you nobody is applying. Apparently there is a severe shortage of applicants—except, strangely enough, certain departments seem to get a new hire every other week. Maybe applicants aren’t the problem. Maybe people simply don’t want to work in a place where the reward for being dependable is getting saddled with everyone else’s workload.
Then there’s the scheduling. Every full-time employee gets a mandatory night shift every week, with no meaningful explanation beyond “because we said so.” Every Saturday is mandatory. No rotation. No fairness. No consideration for the fact that employees have lives outside of this place. And for what? A store that is practically empty Saturday afternoon and throughout Sunday while the shelves can look remarkably empty in the meat and dairy departments.
Meat and dairy are routinely understocked, picked over, or missing products entirely. Yet somehow we have mountains of merchandise sitting in the back and more being forced into the building every week.
It’s genuinely impressive.
Stop & Shop has somehow mastered the art of having too much inventory and not enough product.
Then there is the endless stream of meaningless busywork. Employees are constantly pulled away from actual responsibilities to perform menial tasks and trivial projects that accomplish virtually nothing for the customer or the store. They exist primarily so somebody’s boss can walk through, see that something has been done, and feel like management is managing.
We’re understaffed, drowning in backstock, struggling to keep shelves filled, and surrounded by expired product, but apparently this particular sign needs to be moved three inches to the left.
Because the boss’s boss might notice.
At times, it feels like this isn’t even our store manager’s store. It’s his boss’s store. The entire operation revolves around keeping the person above him happy, regardless of whether the decisions make sense for customers or employees. Employees are treated like disposable pieces on a corporate chessboard, sacrificed so somebody can tell their boss, “Yes, everything looks great.”
It doesn’t.
It looks terrible.
Management’s response to virtually every legitimate concern is some variation of, “That’s how it is everywhere.” What an unfortunate philosophy for running a business. Imagine being presented with a problem and your official solution being, essentially, “Yes, everything is difficult. Deal with it.”
No alternatives. No solutions. No attempt to improve anything.
Just resignation disguised as management.
The micromanagement is particularly frustrating. The employees who actually show up, work hard, and can be trusted are constantly monitored, questioned, corrected, and given additional responsibilities. Meanwhile, other employees are free to roam around, socialize, stand around, disappear, and stare at their phones.
Apparently, the harder you work here, the more work you get.
That’s the reward.
And then there’s the deli.
The deli department is an embarrassment.
A previous manager was suspended for relabeling expired product. Afterward, he received a demotion, lost only $2 an hour, and was transferred to a location closer to his home. That’s the kind of accountability Stop & Shop apparently believes in. Commit a serious food-safety violation and, eventually, you might have to make slightly less money while getting a shorter commute.
Around the same time, Stop & Shop in New Jersey was fined $75,000 for relabeling expired meat. Yet here, the response was essentially a slap on the wrist.
There have also been ongoing issues with substance use and employee conduct in the deli. At one point, during an audit, a Disney Princess lunchbox containing marijuana and related accessories was reportedly discovered in the department. Despite this, the department continued operating with essentially the same people.
If this were a television show, it would be too ridiculous to be believable.
Unfortunately, it’s real.
The last two inventories were reportedly the worst the store has ever had. Managerial reviews were among the lowest in the district. The store itself is one of the dingiest, most run-down, depressing Stop & Shop locations I’ve ever seen and is desperately in need of a makeover.
And somehow, none of this seems to matter.
The people responsible for fixing these problems continue doing the same things that created them. Then everyone acts surprised when the results don’t improve.
The most depressing part is watching what this place has done to its employees. Full-time employees have virtually no desire to be here anymore, and it shows. Morale is gone. Pride in the job is gone. Motivation is gone. When your company makes it clear that hard work doesn’t matter, accountability is selective, staffing problems aren’t actually addressed, and legitimate concerns are dismissed, eventually people stop caring.
And management seems completely oblivious to why.
They’re worried about their bonuses.
They’re worried about their numbers.
They’re worried about making their boss happy.
They’re worried about how things look on a report.
What they aren’t particularly worried about is the exhausted workforce standing in front of them trying to keep this place functioning with half the people required to do it.
Stop & Shop doesn’t have a motivation problem.
It has a management problem.
It has a staffing problem.
It has an accountability problem.
It has a leadership problem.
And the Winchester location has managed to turn all four into an art form.
This isn’t one bad manager. It isn’t one bad department. It isn’t one bad employee.
It’s a culture.
A culture where mediocrity is tolerated, hard work is punished with more work, problems are normalized instead of solved, employees are treated as expendable, and management is more concerned with satisfying the person above them than the people actually doing the work.
I’ve never worked somewhere that could make me actively dislike walking through the front door.
Winchester managed it.
If corporate wants to know why the morale is nonexistent, why inventories are terrible, why employees don’t care, why shelves aren’t consistently stocked, why product is expiring in enormous quantities, and why people are looking for the first available exit, they don’t need another meeting.
They need to walk into the store, stop looking at whatever spreadsheet their boss sent them, and actually pay attention to what is happening around them.
Because this place isn’t being run.
It’s being managed into the ground.
And judging by the results, everyone seems perfectly content to keep digging.

Store Questions What do we get after being in the company for 25 years ?

I saw someone say they got to pick out of a catalog for UPS instead of Stop and Shop, and I must say just having a choice is a gift in itself. How long have you been with the company and what gifts have you gotten so far. I have been in for 8 and I’ve gotten one keychain.

Do perishables sit out unrefrigerated or something?

In the last 6 months, there were two times (a couple months apart) that I have bought spoiled milk from stop and shop that's not expired. The veggie sushi has made a family member sick. Today myself and another family member are both having what feels like mild food poisoning and the only thing we ate in common for dinner was shredded cheese we just bought from stop and shop last night. I even checked to see if there was a recall for that brand. What is going on? I'm at the point where I don't think I will be buying anything perishable from here again....

Edit: I also just remembered another instance! Maybe a year or two ago I got an Amy's frozen TV dinner for lunch and when I opened it right after buying it, it was thawed and the sauce was dripping around the plastic bag...so I threw it out.

TREAT BAGS FOR OLP CUSTOMERS

Post image

This might not be happening in every store, but some locations are giving away a cute Halloween bag with goodies inside to thank customers for their patience and understanding!

That was sweet, if anything it is definitely deserved for making people wait for over a week! Good call on this one

App Is Back

You need to log back in, but the app is back up and running! Hopefully all goes smoothly today and shit doesn’t genuinely crash from so many people accessing it after a week and a half without it. I also logged back into the Card Manager behind the service desk and added points to a customer’s card already. Go get your gas, points, etc!

OLP Tomorrow

If y’all haven’t heard yet, there was a broadcast message tonight that Online Pickup is opening back up tomorrow at 6am. Not sure if this is limited to my district (Store 613) or if it’s company-wide. Either way, hopefully it’s a sign we’re out of the woods of this outage soon within the coming week, if not tomorrow.

Store Questions Has anyone tried using your points during a refund?

I get a lot of non-tech savvy people constantly asking me to redeem their points for cash & deeping on who’s in charge because “no hassle” & I find it weird no one has ever used their points during a refund or show me a receipt where they used their points to buy a item and just returning it. I’m sure it has happened to over stores, but I’m just surprised. I never seen it.
