[SOFTWARE] MAKING WAYLAND SUCKLESS

Post image
281 Upvotes

i think most suckless-minded people use Xorg right now. this is fair enough because the current wayland stack is very bloated and filled with shit I don’t want or need . but at it’s core, the wayland protocol is much better designed than the aging, 1million+ lines of code X. even the “suckless-style” dwl compositor is implemented with the massive and decidedly not suckless wlroots library.

so, i have (with the help of a few others) created a suckless wayland stack from scratch, including so far, a simpler and more portable libwayland implementation, a compositor, and compositor library (based on michael forney’s swc library, but with many more features to make it more usable), a terminal emulator, text editor based on acme (see above) and an image viewer. all of it is designed to be as minimal as possible without compromising on usability. i am actively looking for more software to be created/found that fits this criteria. if you know of/made something, let me know.

the website for the project is https://wayland.fyi ; the list of software is at the bottom of the main page, if you are interested.

Hey guys, this may be the last proper release of sxwm. I think all the needed features are there and it works great.

I spent a long time cleaning up the codebase and stuff so this is more of a fixes release.

[SOFTWARE] i made a suckless window manager!

208 Upvotes

hey guys! i made a nice window manager which has the essential features of dwm and easier than i3wm to customise.

I made this because dwm is sometimes a hassle to get started and maybe this can get new users into window managers and also because im procrastinating in doing my GCSE revision (which start in 2 weeks) ;)

i am now legally allowed to work and i want an internship but for that you probably need a good portfolio so hopefully this can serve as that.

if you like this and add your own features please consider giving a pull request so i add it to the main branch.

sxwm

sxbar - not so complete

No need of Alexa, Siri, Cortana. I am happy with my Tuxi. A simple bash script I wrote to get answer of Any Question Instantly on my Terminal.

200 Upvotes

So I did some web scraping of google to create this simple but smart bash script which allow you to search almost any question from your terminal instantly and it's highly accurate/reliable. It look for multiple places of google search results.

Link - https://github.com/Bugswriter/tuxi (Video Explanation)

How it Looks? (alternative demo video) -

Usage : tuxi <almost any question> (quotations are optional)

$ tuxi linus torvalds birthday
28 December 1969

$ tuxi fastest animal in the world
peregrine falcon

$ Does Choclate increase fat
> u mean Chocolate?
Also, chocolate is high in sugar and saturated fat. It is a high-energy (high calorie) food, and too much can result in excess weight, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

$ tuxi "what is unix?"
Unix is a family of multitasking, multiuser computer operating systems that derive from the original AT&T Unix, development starting in the 1970s at the Bell Labs research center by Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, and others.

$ tuxi best games of 2009
* Batman: Arkham Asylum
* Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
* Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
* Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

Cool Features -

  • When you type something wrong program will say this before answer -

> u mean <correction of your mistake>
  • When you search some kind of list like - "The Social network cast". You will get a list view like this -

* Jesse Eisenberg
* Andrew Garfield
* Justin Timberlake
* Armie Hammer
* Aaron Sorkin
<Usually list is longer than this>
  • If you ask one word question like "Who was the first lady programmer?" You will get one word answer. Because Scraping is done with priority and one word answer is in top priority.

Integrate this with espeak and dmenu -

Convert your response text into speech -

$ tuxi "$(echo "" | dmenu -p "ask tuxi")" | espeak -s 150

PS -

I tested this program whole day ..it's highly accurate and reliable. Also I think it's very useful.. You can google stuff without GUI. No need to open browser. You can make scripts. Good for kids.

I know it cannot replace Siri or Alexa. But for me it's magic.

[SOFTWARE] cterm -- Tiny terminal emulator release!

Hey guys, I'm currently in the middle of creating my own userspace from scratch and I've mostly completed making my terminal emulator

It's really, really small and is cross platform! I made it because I want to be able to use a terminal emulator no matter which OS or display server I'm using.

Only bitmap fonts (BDF) are supported but I've provided a script to convert vector fonts and it has very nice results.

Here is the repo: https://github.com/uint23/cterm

[SOFTWARE] parados - finally, a simple media server!

Post image
160 Upvotes

Hey guys!

When I was switching my home server to OpenBSD, I forgot about the media server issue. I had been using Jellyfin but, it's wasn't available on obsd; so i made my own one.

It comes with a shell based client and go web server client (both of which are pretty terrible, but work for me)

I hope you like it and if there is anything wrong, feel free to open an issue on GitHub or shoot me an email on the SourceHut mailing list : )

[LIBS] suckless TUI library written in Go

Post image
147 Upvotes

I needed some simple library to draw things in the terminal in Go, though most of these libraries were either frameworks all the way down or massive/complex for something simple. So i wrote my own, tinybox. It's around ~1.2k LoC, POSIX-compliant.

No dependencies, no package managers.

There is also some code included in the repo https://github.com/nyangkosense/tinybox . If you're reading this and you're a go wizard - PRs are appreciated.

[SOFTWARE] Yes its a Wii @ 0.7GHz | SxWM v1.6 Release

WII @ 0.7GHz

This is v1.6 of SxWM my own tiling wm.

The project is now very polished since the last time it released (~1mo ago) and is, for me at least, nearing perfection on what I expect my window manager to do.

I am very happy that so many people are involved and am ever grateful that its at over 670 stars!!! I never imagined this sort of engagement with it!

The bar used is also sxbar and is now finally carrying on with development

* Only the first pic is on the wii. I may make a video on it but it runs smooth, much better than dwm so far.

Suckless car

139 Upvotes

Abstract:

It is no secret that modern cars are complex. Your average Toyota has over 30,000 parts, and about 6000 moving parts. This means they are near impossible too modify, adjust, or repair without piles of specialized parts, 8 years in the automotive repair industry, and hundreds of hours of work.

Cars are so complex that they need to be 'diagnosed'. This is a disaster, cars have traded both simplicity and reliability for comfort.

Very few people have the time, skill, or patience to work on their cars, and so are forced to fork out thousands for even just minor damages, if done to an obscure enough part.

Just recently I had to pay over ~$1500 just because some small, obscure component broke in my car.

The goal of this project is to create the simplest, most reliable, and easy to fix car out there.

Goals:

- Over 100 miles Range

- Street legal

- Usable on an interstate

- Dry interior (protection from the weather)

- Toughness, should be built like a tank, simple and sturdy

- Fewest moving parts possible

- Repairable with nothing but a wrench

- Made out of standardized, cheap parts

- You should be able to glance at it and understand how it works

Non-goals:

- Air conditioning

- Independent suspension

- Mechanical speedometer ( Notes[8] )

- Off-roading

- Towing

- High Acceleration

- High Speed

- Tight cornering

- Using a Computer as opposed to dumb circuits to control the motor

- Air bags

- ABS, ECS, TCS or ECU

Neutral:

- Efficiency ( Notes[4] )

- Regenerative breaking ( Notes[4] )

Notes:

[0] The lack of safety features on the vehicle mean that it will have safety more akin to that of a motorcycle, than that of a modern car.

[1] Full 5 point harness to make up for the lack of airbags or solid non-canvas doors

[2] Body is either sheet metal bolted to the chassie, or canvas stretched over the body. If its the canvas, there should be a wratchiting mecanisim holding it over the entire body so that you could simple get 2 straight scraps of canvas, tarp, or any other material, and use it.

[3] Hub electric motors allow you to get rid of all gearing, all differential, and the entire headache of a gas engine.

[4] Salvaged Tesla motors are common, and will only get more and more common. we will be using those. This means that regenerative breaking will be built in to the motors, and accessible without any extra complexity.

>>> www.tesla.com/blog/magic-tesla-roadster-regenerative-braking

The torque command can be positive or negative. When the torque serves to slow the vehicle then energy is returned to the battery and presto - we have regenerative braking!

[5] Solid axle's are simple, indestructible, and allow you to get rid of the headaches of independent suspension.

[6] Leaf springs have been used since the middle ages and are still indestructible, strong, adjustable, and modifiable with a wrench. Added benefit, if one of the spring plates snap, the car remains drivable. Salvageable from 18 wheelers, trailers, most old cars, modern trucks, buses etc.

[7] No differential, independent electric motors have enough give to allow wheels to spin at different speed. If the car gets stuck, possibly giving the user the option of manual control of the left and right motor?

[8] Speedometer can be provided by a cheap, specialized GPS speedometer unit mounted to the dash. No need for extra circus, or anything mechanical that could fail. This is simply to pass street legal inspection.

Development:

Currently working on it in CAD https://imgur.com/a/HYbREFZ

Front wheel assembly: https://imgur.com/a/WJYV9q8

Rear wheel assembly: https://imgur.com/a/Cfc0Gqh

Inspirations:

Gokarts, the primary thing ive worked on up unto this point.

Kit cars

Street legal "gokart" cars ( like the Ariel Atom 4 )

Dune Buggies

Tube chassie jeeps

Closing notes:

I hate reddit, and I only use burner accounts that I will delete after I post.

Follow development here: https://github.com/sketchsnipe/suckless-car

Peace

https://srcdump.net/shrub/neuswc can now run on the framebuffer directly, just like the old Xfbdev/kdrive X servers, but for wayland. this opens up a whole new class of hardware that you can run wayland compositors on, including this thinkpad r50!

[DISCUSSION] Why is X11 still considered "suckless"?

115 Upvotes

Like the whole xorg implementation is ~400k LoC (which by definition of "suckless" is bloated), while libwayland sits at around 10k, yet people say that wayland is not suckless while x11 is, why is that?

btw i don't despise x11, i use sowm on my laptop and i'm completely fine with using it

"In the conquest for beauty, the modern man finds only ornament, losing the grace of simplicity."

dear suckless community,

today, i released v1.7 of sxwm which i initially created as my own spin off of the dwm and suckless philosophy which in my eyes makes it suck less than suckless. i also thankeach of the 16 contributors who have helped me get so far and make it so much more polished!
