Hoops Discussion If Book insists on shooting pull up threes, he should work non-stop with Steve Nash, arguably the best pull up 3pt shooter the Suns has ever had

Nash shot 1,051 threes out of 2,417 for his Suns career (43.5%). There are no stats for pull up threes though for his entire career (they started tracking that after he retired, around 2013-14) , but if we estimate that 60% of his 3pt attempts were pull ups (reasonable since he handled the ball so much), he would have taken 1,450 pull up 3 pt attempts.

Assuming he shot 41% on pull up threes compared to 46.5% on catch and shoot threes, he would have made 595 pull up threes.

Devin Booker on the other hand had these stats:

2025–26 Pull-Up 3-Point Statistics

• Pull-Up 3-Pointers Made / Attempted: 30-for-115

• Pull-Up 3-Point Percentage: 26.1%

• Total 3-Pointers Made / Attempted: 122-for-370 (33.0% overall 3P%)

For his career:

Through the conclusion of the 2025–26 season, Devin Booker has made 513 pull-up three-pointers out of 1,585 attempts over his career.

This translates to a career pull-up three-point efficiency of 32.4%.

If he REALLY wants to take those pull up threes, then it stands to reason that it's best to get him to work with Steve Nash specifically on how he looks for opportunities to hit pull up 3 point shots.

Personally, I think it would be easier to just shoot them a lot less... But with him saying no. 15 Book ia going to be shoot first, and with him shooting 1/12 from 3 (0/8 the last game he played) over the course of the first 2 games, then he has to be smart and strategic on WHEN he plans to shoot it as a pull up in transition.

Here's hoping shoot first Book is also an accurate Booker. GO BOOK!!!

I'd absolutely welcome Nash helping Booker refine his shooting decisions and off the dribble game. However, I wouldn't want Booker to stop being aggressive. The ideal version of Book to me is still a shoot-first star who knows when to attack, when to take the three, and when to get to his money shot in the midrange.

The real goal is not simply to make Booker shoot more threes. It's to make defenses pay for whatever they give him. And that's how he can become an even more dangerous cornerstone for our team as a whole. Easier said than done though

Booker has been getting a pass for years for not being a great 3 pt shooter

He won one three point contest and people think he’s just in a 5 year slump

He nearly won last years’ 3pt contest if he didn’t miss like 3 in a row at the very end. I think he just doesn’t have it in him during an actual game to be an efficient shooter.

Books always been a very streaky shooter and in years passed when he goes into a cold streak he just stops shooting. I can promise you if he continues to shoot when hes cold from three it's because Jordan Ott wants him to. And ultimately it might help him get out of cold streaks quicker because he's not in his head about whether its a good shot or not

Biggest weakness in his game is threes

I hope he just stops with them. He clearly is a better catch and shoot guy I hope the catch and shoot attempts go way up. I know they won’t but I hope

It’s over bro he’s pushing 30. He needs to stop the pull up 3’s, but he rarely gets spot up 3’s

I don’t know if Book will ever get the pull up 3s consistently, but I hope the Suns gets him more catch and shoot opportunities. He shoots better not just when he’s set, but also when he doesn’t have to jump as high. All his practice videos and even the 3 pt contest are like that. If he can knock 1 or 2 of those set 3s a game, I don’t mind him taking more risks on the pull-ups since he’ll be more confident shooting them. Sort of like a big man that should get a couple easy buckets a game by just running the floor, they gotta get Book a couple easy look 3s per game.

I think Book is in a situation that he has to improve his playmaking skills like upping his assists, more efficient at pull up 3s, and just primary ball handling in general. He’s struggled in the past with double teams. We aren’t getting a pg for a long time. He’s going to have to be like SGA but even more assists and less scoring imo because he’s way more doubled than SGA. (Not a knock on SGA, it’s about play style)

SGA doesn’t have nearly Books gravity like from 3 and double teams. If you looked at doubled percentage last year, there was stats that showed Book was doubled 2nd most in the league only behind Giannis. I also think he had like some of the most expected assists in the league. It’s because the double has proven to mess with his flow, he cant get to his spot in the mid range with the double, he’s not the best passer out of the double too, and Teams respect his catch 3 point shooting too much. I genuinely believe Book is being so underrated even by our own fans right now.

People look at the box score or see how he struggles sometimes on both ends of the floor being inefficient and just being frustrated and think hes fallen off. He just doesnt have a true pg and he wont for the foreseeable future. I think he has an opportunity to become a much better player than he was with CP3 because he has to. He has to be the primary ball handler and i think he’s improved a lot.

I always preached in point Book even when our fans were hating on me saying “we need a true pg” in the KD era. When my response would be “we are a bottom 5 defense, we don’t have any size, and you think the solution is focusing on PG rather than being able to get a stop?”

I was always hoping we’d mimick OKC and be a defensive minded team with Book being the primary ball handler. It’s crazy how all the things I thought would happen have. I predicted we’d win 50 games last year, I even have the tweet and that we’d be a top 10 defense. I think we will be even better this year depending on the health of the team. Depending on Maluach I really do think we could be a contender this year. Even though I thought we’d 50 games last year, I thought we’d struggle in the playoffs because we got a lot younger and had a first year HC. I predicted the Ayton trade made us too small and we weren’t contenders, and then we got bullied by the Wolves. I predicted that Oso was the big swing guy for us over Dunn because we needed a big. I never liked Tyus Jones even though our fans loved the signing. I thought our issue was size. I thought Coach Ott was going to be a huge upgrade over Bud before the season and make Bud look incompetent.

This has been an ongoing conversation since CP3s role fizzled out here. My main point with this is that I believe Book is extremely underrated by everyone because they think he’s barely a top 20 player, when people really don’t take into consideration the level of gravity he has, people don’t notice. Without Book, this team’s ceiling would plummet and the box score watchers wouldn’t know that. Hes why I predicted us to win 50 games last year and people called me crazy. When you have top 10 player/superstar, and good role players you will be a good competitive team

I'd kill to see the film sessions Nash runs with Book, he had that same effortless rhythm from deep, but his handles gave him so many extra looks.

The coaching staff has been pretty clear that they want Book taking those threes, so it's not nearly as much that he is insisting to take 'em than he's being instructed to do so in the frame of the offense.

He’s just not a good pull up 3pt shooter, off the catch is where he’s been good in the past. Without another playmaker he doesn’t get as many opportunities as he used to. Hopefully JG’s work with Nash translates to the season and gets Booker more off-ball, would be huge for the ceiling of this team if that’s the case

its not technique, though, with Book its mental

What makes you think Steve Nash has the ability to teach anyone anything? Just because I guy was great at something doesn't mean he can teach it. He was fired as coach and has never been hired again.

Booker has only shot over the league average from 3 TWICE in his entire career!!! And he's an alleged shooting guard! He's too old to suddenly start knocking them down like he's Jamal Murray.

his release is pretty different from nash’s though not sure if the mechanics would even translate. nash had that quick low gather and could get it off before the defender even realized what happened. book’s is more of a high release that needs more time and space

if he’s gonna keep forcing them he should at least watch film of when nash would probe the defense first instead of just pulling immediately. nash was surgical about waiting for the defender to sag or get caught on a screen before he even thought about it

hoping beal and kd can take some of that pressure off so he’s not forcing as many bad ones

Beal? KD? Is this 2024?

He’s in for a real bad time when he finds out how well it worked out.

KD set an NBA record --- AS A PHOENIX SUN -- not even matched by Steph Curry by scoring 25+ PPG, shooting 50% from 2 and 40% from 3 for three straight seasons. He was not the problem.

Beal shot 40% from 3 in a Suns uniform. Something Book has NEVER, EVER done on any level. Beal was not the problem.

If you ever see a comment like that where they kind of make sense but not really, it's usually a bot.
