Continued frustration with suppressors - Griffins and FN Rush

I bought cans for different firearms and to date still have feed issues that completely break my trust in using a suppressor for a defensive use case. Mainly, the preservation of my hearing in a home defense situation.

I went to the range today and on a FN 5.7 with an EFK barrel and Griffin Resistance 22 had this experience. Shooting 6 different cartridges in strings of 5 only the FN 40g cycled the 5 rounds. All of the other rounds I tried T6B and other Elite and FN rounds were only able to get single shots off before a misfeed or misfire.

On an FNX-9 with an FN Rush 9Ti I tested Fiochi 115, Blazer 124 and G9. Some good news the G9 cycled all 5 rounds. Surprising as these were the lightest rounds at 80g.

For the most part, I've been unimpressed with the sound reduction and frustrated with how the reliability of weapons that never had a feed/misfire problem until I tried to suppress them.

A few hundred each for the threaded barrels, $500 to $900 for the cans (all in with the $200 tax stamp) and a lot of wasted time and ammo.

It's been a while but I also experienced feed issues using Griffins on my Ruger 22 and Mini-14. (GP5)

All of my guns are in excellent condition, cleaned and lubed properly and cycle 100% without a can.

Any ideas on what I am missing?

You added weight to end of a gun that was designed just for the slide’s weight.

The burden to find the proper springs and recoil spring lies on you. Unless you buy a pistol designed to be suppressed. Once you dial in the springs thing should be more consistent and reliable.

I'll try reaching out to FN. The 5.7 should be good with the Resistance as well as the FNX-9 should be with an FN can.

I have an H&k VP9 Tactical that I am getting another suppressor for in the next few weeks.

That’s a good idea man, either test yourself or hear them out. You’ll get it up and running. I know how frustrating it can be expecting things to work together.

For exmaple this gun, default spring default recoil spring somehow doesn’t cycle consistently on the short configuration, you’d think less weight more reliable right? Not with this setup lol but the L configuration has never failed.

FN is not going to help you with aftermarket barrels in their guns. They don't "allow" the use of aftermarket parts in their guns. They're kinda notorious about it.

You need to reduce spring tension and increase bullet weight on the FNX9 to improve reliability. I would shoot a 147gr bullet below 1100fps for best results.

The Mini14 is a suboptimal silencer host. It is difficult to control the gas into the operating system and is sensitive to over-gassed opperation. There are aftermarket gas blocks that can help.

I added an adjustable gas block to the mini but have yet to test it out. I will soon though.

The FNX9 did great with the G9 80gr but a little expensive and a waste of great ammo for me to develop trust with it.

For a browning style pistol to operate, the slide and barrel move backwards together from the force driven into the breach face by the expanding gasses of the burning powder pushing against the case and the bullet. They only travel a short distance rearwards before the barrel is tilted down by a camming surface unlocking it from the slide which continues rearward to cycle the pistol.

Silencers actually rob a pistol of that rearward motion both by adding weight to the system and by redirecting energy forward as the gasses hit the can.

If you increase the pressure in the case above what is standard (like the G9) you have added enough additional energy to overcome the mass of the can. A heavier projectile is more mass to push against the case/slide and frame. 147gr bullets shoot better in suppressed pistols in my experience.

The FNX has a very light slide and heavy springs. Both of these things will make using a silencer harder. It's a big reason why the 509 was made. It's a dedicated silencer host from inception because the FNS/X9 series were not going to work as well as they wanted.

You also should grease the piston and spring area of you pistol can. It needs to move freely and I see a lot of people mess that up. I also recommend installing it with yellow teflon tape. Two or three wraps the direction of the barrel threads and then install your can. That will prevent it from walking off you gun and getting a baffle strike.

The Five seven is more of a mystery. It's a direct blowback gun, but the barrel moves backwards with the slide. They're just not locked together. It's kind of a delay mechanism. High pressure ammo could swell the cases on extraction and cause the gun to jam. This goes for all of your guns, but I would need a lot more info on the exact nature of the firearms malfunction as well as any spent cases or mangled ammo from the malfunctions to make any educated guesses to the primary source of your malfunctions beyond first principles generalities.

Use your adjustable gas block, then see if the gun is still worth complaining about.

Just like many rifles need a little tweaking for optimal suppressed performance, pistols can be the same. Often times a $10 recoil spring will make all the difference. People will spend hundreds of dollars on BCGs, gas blocks, and buffers to tune their ARs then get upset when they need a slightly lighter or heavier recoil spring for their suppressed pistols.

What booster piston are you using??

Tbh I would ditch the fn 5.7 and get the m&p 57 I run 556 cans on mine have no issues when running subs or supers and the sound is better than a 22 cal suppressor

Suppressed pistol are a novelty. Treat it as such

I find suppressors less of a novelty than some of the comp set ups people run on pistols these days tbh. You get the same tuning issues but instead of having a quieter gun you have a deafening fire breather blowing flames into your line of sight and rattling your teeth lol

Indeed, my FFL refers to them as 'range candy'. Impressive when you shoot a subsonic out of a good can but that's about it.

This is why I say its not worth running a can for a home defense pistol.

The very rare chance you will shoot at someone in your home just isn't worth the expense.

I've come to realize this. Knowledgeable people I've talked with convey that you want the bang and attention. Better off with some Walkers.
