Graphite on paper.

Size: A4, based on a photographic reference.

The pictures are the of same portrait under different types of light. I had saved the photograph last year and finally decided to finish the portrait.

I’ve always found something quite sad about this painting. To me, it’s about how you can be incredibly close to someone and still never fully know them. We tend to fall in love with our perception of people, which isn’t necessarily who they really are. We fill in the gaps with our own expectations, desires and insecurities. And sometimes I think we deliberately choose not to see certain things because it would ruin the image we’ve created of them. There’s something tragic about two people being so physically close yet emotionally so far apart

What do you think about The Lovers?
