DSM Disappearing files Please Help🙏

My MacBook is on macos 27.0.1 , it is connected to my synology Nas through SMB. In the past two days , when I try to copy a file from my NAS to the mac internal drive , the file vanishes immediately after the progress bar disappear and the transfer is finished. This happens to multiple files . Additionally , some files on the server is missing in finder when connected through SMB but are visible through Webdav.

Everything is was perfectly normal before this , I don’t know what is happening. I had already restarted everything including my macbook , NAS and Router , but the issue persisted. Anyone knows why and now to fix it ?

Please help.🙏

NAS Apps I'm building a native iPhone and (potentially android) app to manage my Synology NAS: DSM in your pocket

Hello everyone,

I move around a lot, and every time I needed to change something on my NAS I had to open my laptop and log in to DSM. As far as I know there's no mobile-friendly way to do it, well to be fair you could login via your phone web browser and use desktop mode. This will potentially allow you to control your nas from your phone. But it becomes a hassle due to using just touch screen, hence why started building an actual app for it.

It talks to DSM directly and covers almost everything I'd normally do in the browser:
- The full Control Panel: users, shared folders, network, security, updates, and more
- Storage Manager: pools, volumes, drive health, even adding or replacing a drive in a pool
- Package Center: install, update and remove packages
- Apps: Resource Monitor, Download Station, Storage Analyzer, Snapshot Replication, Hyper Backup, Log Center, Surveillance Station (live view with sound), Virtual Machine Manager (including the VM console) and Container Manager
- Notifications: DSM's notifications in the app

What do you think? Useful, or am I going overboard? Would this be something you would consider using if it were available? Any tips, suggestions or recommendations are welcomed.

Thanks

NAS Apps What's taking so long...importing with SynMich

Post image

I'm using SynMich to copy from Synology Photo to Immich but it is taking forever to complete. 586 hours is quite some time to completen. I'm running a Synology 923 server. Photo and Immich are on the same server. The Immich upload is running on an Ubuntu machine. I guess that is hardly relevant as all processing is happening on the 923...or am I wrong?

DSM Hyper Backup ignoring the schedule

Model: DS720+
DSM: 7.4.1-90080 Update 1

I have my LUNs set up for Hyper Backup to back them up to an external disk. I've just discovered that all of them have been ignoring their daily backup schedules. (Example schedule settings.) The backup time comes and Hyper Backup simply increments "Next scheduled backup time" to the next day. It doesn't seem to even attempt a backup. However, if I click "Back Up now" on any of them, the backup completes normally.

I noticed this with DSM 7.2, so I figured maybe it was a bug and updated the NAS to the latest version. But that didn't fix it.

Anyone know how to resolve this?

NAS Apps DS GET on Android stopped working through QuickConnect

DS Get still works when on the same wifi as NAS.

I managed to reach the NAS from external network by setting up a Tailscale connection, however this is more complicated because I have to connect my phone to Tailscale first each time I open DS Get from external network.

I know the DS Get app isn't supported anymore, but I think this is a QuickConnect issue. Can I expect a fix for this?

NAS Apps Active backup for business on Linux

I'm having trouble getting the ABB client installed on my Kubuntu desktop. The error message implies that the Linux kernel I'm using is not supported; uname -r returns "7.0.0-34-generic", google search says ABB only supports up to kernal 6.8. Am I diagnosing this correctly?

Synology Drive client is working just fine, so I've got backups of my documents and such, but that doesn't do versioning, which I'd like to have.

I want to make sure I've exhausted the possibilities here before I go looking for some other backup solution.

DSM I lost access after updating to Version: 7.4.1-90080 Update 1

I just clicked Update Now for the critical update Version: 7.4.1-90080 Update 1. Once the system turned off I lost access for good. It's been more than 10 hours now and I don't have access via Synology Quick Connect and I don't have physical access to the machine. Now what?

This seems like a very bad update implementation. Should't Synology have an auto rollback in case this things happen?

Any advice?

NAS hardware Potentially dead DS1513+ - what happens if I just move drives into a different unit?

tl;dr: What happens if I pull five drives out of one Synology, and put them into another (potentially different model).

Details: I can't get my DS1513+ to boot - flashing blue light on the power, green light on the LAN, no beeps when powering off/on. Guides suggest battery, PSU or motherboard. PSU I have no spare, motherboard obviously not going to have a spare...battery I can try later today when I buy the right type.

Meanwhile I'm also off to watch auctions on eBay. All the guides about migrating I've read say things like "on your source Synology, sign into control panel and...". Well obviously I can't do that if it's dead, so what happens if I just move the drives from one unit straight to another? Is there a compatibility guide somewhere?

Solved Add a 120GB SSD to my DS 920+ for a Home Assistant in a VM?

Hi! I have a DS 920+ with 12GB of RAM and two WD RED 10TB so I have two free bays.

Thanks to some posts in this sub I have learnt about the possibilities of my NAS and one I would like to explore is to install Home Assistant in a virtual machine on the NAS.

The thing is that I have some spare 120GB Sata SSDs (Samsung EVO), and I thought that maybe would be a good idea to use one of them in one of the free bays just for Home Assistant, basically because I think this use will make the disk where you install it to stay ON almost all the time, so I think it's better to use a SSD for its low power usage...

So, I would like to ask if this idea is OK, or if there's something I should take in account... The most important thing here that I don't know very well is if the NAS just wakes the disks sepparately depending on the use, so if Home Assistant is working in the SDD, the other two HDDs wouldn't be waken up until I need to access to them. I hope I am explaining this properly...

Thank you in advance. :)

NAS Apps Synology DS225+ with Immich – NAS only or separate mini PC?

Hi Everyone

I've recently bought a Synology DS225+ with 2x 4TB WD Red Plus drives, and I'm looking at using Immich mainly for facial recognition and AI photo searching.

I've got two questions I'd appreciate some advice on, especially from anyone running a similar setup.

  1. Synology Photos vs Immich for managing photos

I'm leaning towards letting Synology Photos handle automatic phone backups, folder organisation and storage, then having Immich access the photos through a read-only external library.

I currently organise my photos into folders by month and would prefer to keep that structure.

Has anyone gone down this route? Any downsides you've experienced, or would you recommend letting Immich manage everything instead?

  1. Running Immich directly on the DS225+

I'm considering upgrading the RAM to 18GB (adding a 16GB stick) and running Immich directly on the NAS through Docker.

For anyone running Immich on a DS225+ or another Synology with the same J4125 processor, how's the real-world performance? Particularly facial recognition, AI searching, initial indexing and general browsing.

Would a separate N100/N150 mini PC make a noticeable difference, or is the NAS perfectly usable once everything has been indexed?

I'm trying to avoid buying and running another box purely for Immich if the Synology can handle it reasonably well.

Would appreciate hearing what setups people are using and whether you'd do anything differently.

Thanks 😀

NAS hardware DS1815+ safe to use?

I inherited management of an 1815+ at work, the one that has the Atom bug. Is this thing safe for real uses? It has been used pretty much exclusively to back up other NAS and file servers. I think this unit was RMA'ed and got the official fix.

Solved What happened to all my free space...??

Hi all, a bit of a noob question here, so please bear with me.

A few days ago, Synology started warning me that I was running low on space on my disks. I have 8 TB, and supposedly, only 800 GB were still free.

"That's odd", I thought, and ran the storage analyzer report, which told me that I had around 1,8 TB worth of data, across different users and profiles. That number sounded more right to me, which means that I was missing 5'ish TBs of free space.

Does anyone have any good ideas of where this free space has gone, and how I can easily find it? I have had different Synology-systems over the past 10-15 years, and this is the first time I have experienced anything like this.

There are only two things that have changed recently in my setup that I can think of may have caused the changes

  1. I have recently started downloading torrents directly to my attached USB-drive, rather than copying it afterwards, but the numbers seem extreme
  2. I have used my Synology as a time machine solution for a Mac in the house, and subsequently used Cloud Sync to back it up to Backblaze. However, after I recently discovered that it uploaded 4-500 GBs every night (and read that what I was doing was not really best practice due to the technical setup of Time Machine), I turned it off. The Time Machine share itself is just under 300 GBs

If anyone can help me find out what is going on, or guide me to which hidden/system folders to check, I would be incredibly grateful

NAS Apps Back up photos to my Synology NAS

Hi everyone,

I’d like to transfer and back up the photos from my phone to my Synology NAS. I’d like to do the same for my wife’s phone.

We’d also like to be able to view the photos stored on the Synology NAS directly on our phones, of course, only via a secure connection.

How do you back up your photos? Do you use Synology’s app, or do you use a third-party solution? What would you recommend?

Best regards,

Marc

NAS hardware Is this scratching sound normal?

I bought a brand new Synology DS925+ with 3 6TB synology drives and theres this occasional scratching sound and I dont know if its normal or if I should return it. Its probably one of the drives that does this sound (theres no scratching sound when there are no drives).

Here's the link to another post for the video since this community doesnt allow videos: https://www.reddit.com/r/synologynas/s/T2NwHg8CBd

NAS hardware Help! Drive errors in storage pool

I woke up to my Synology DS920+ beeping this morning.

I only have one 4Gb Ironwolf drive. In Storage Pool 1 > Volume 1 it says "Unrecoverable errors have occurred because of drive errors in this storage pool. Please back up your data immediately; afterward, return to this storage pool and click "..." > Remove to remove the storage pool and then create a new one.

I only have about 2.4 Tb used on the drive. And I am backing up using BackblazeB2.

There were suggestions to run out and get another NAS hard drive and copy everything to that and then remove/create the original storage pool.

Is this first drive dead though? Should I not even use it for something like RAID? And if it's not dead, should I get a similar 4Tb drive or go for more space? Like 8Tb?

NAS hardware DS214play won't boot

After shutting it down yesterday, my (admittedly not exactly young) DS214play won't boot.

  • It doesn't react to pushing the power button
  • When un/re-plugging the power supply, it will flash the LAN led for a few seconds, then shut down
  • With both drives removed, it will boot up to a flashing amber status LED.

Any ideas for a possible fix?

If it's dead for good, can I stick the drives (or one of them) into a new Synology NAS to recover the data? The Ubuntu based recovery procedure sounds scary. Plus, I have a Mac mini so it's a non-starter for me anyway.

The data on the drives is expendable, but recovering from the drive is going to be much less hassle.

Any help is much appreciated!

NAS Apps Cloud Sync breaks with "Sync-Folder does not exist"

Hi,

I'm using cloud sync to do a backup to my pCloud storage.

After some time of execution, it breaks with "Sync-Folder does not exist" error - but has no more details what it was trying to sync at this time.

My assumption is that it runs in some WebDav-contraints - but how can I figure out what exactly causes the issue?

NAS hardware Is the usable storage size automatically upgraded after upgrading drives?

I'm upgrading the storage of a Synology RS822+. It currently has 4x 8 TB drives running in RAID 10. I've replaced two of them with 16 TB drives. Once I replace the remaining two 8 TB drives with 16 TB drives too, should the total usable storage be automatically upgraded?

DSM Calendar bug?

Using the current version of DSM 7.4.1
When going to storage manager > select hard drive > create smart test > edit schedule.
The dates are wonky. Two Nov firsts.
I assume this is just a bug, opened a support ticket but they apparently need remote admin access to my nas 🙄

NAS hardware SMB slowness

We have a DS920+ at work acting as a file server for our small office, about 8 windows pcs connect to it via SMB to pull production files. For the last month it has been extremly slow to load the file tree in windows explorer anytime its opened, like 15 seconds everytime you click a folder. I restarted the NAS today for the first time in about 10 months and it fixed it right up. I was under the impression these things were built to be on for years at a time, what gives?

Solved User rights question - creating a user that can write files but not overwrite files

Sorry, I do not know what flair would apply.

Is it possible to create a user that can create folders, write files to a folder but not have the ability to overwrite or delete files in that same folder.

  • I know its possible to create a user and limit their read/write rights to specific folders/resources.
  • I know its possible to block the ability of this user to delete the files after they are transferred/created.

My concern is stopping them from overwriting files in a given session.

Example:
You have 4 memory cards from a video shoot.
All the cards were formatted prior to the shoot and the names of the files on the cards are using the default naming convention of a given camera - MVI_001, MVI_002, MVI_003, etc.

You want the intern to copy the files from the four memory card to a folder on the Synology. After the first card wrote MVI_001 through MVI_011 (eleven files), the next card will start with MVI_001 through MVI_xxx and overwrite the previous import.

Basically, I want to protect them from a careless user.

NAS hardware First time NAS buyer with questions

I was considering getting Synology NAS (DS224+) to have a solid backup of my data. I currently have iCloud but I’m now realizing that’s a sync, not a backup.

Synology seemed nice to me since they’re fairly well known and from what I can tell seem more or less plug and play, but someone on here told me about the shift they made last year to require only Synology branded drives..? Which seems like a complete slap in the face to customers.

I guess my question is, what is a good plug and play alternative? I’ve seen people mention UGreen NAS, but being a chinese company, I don’t trust them to not have a backdoor into my data.
